## What is Everywhen?

Four places a day. Two questions each: where on Earth is this, and when did it happen?

You get a photograph and a clue. Drop a pin on the map, choose a moment in time, and see how close you were — then read the short story behind the place.

Why places stick

The method of loci — the "memory palace" — works because human memory is exceptional at attaching facts to locations. Everywhen is built on that. Every story is anchored to the spot on Earth where it actually happened, so what you learn has somewhere to live.

What's inside

• A daily round — four places, 1,000 points
• 378 places across seven realms: the past, science and invention, arts and culture, belief and myth, earth and sky, the living world, mind and society
• A Passport that fills in as you go, every place you've collected pinned to a world map
• 49 collections and 28 walks that join places into a single story
• A streak, and the full history of every day you've played
• Star the places you want to come back to, and find them again from anywhere
• Hard mode, when the clue makes it too easy

Your Passport, everywhere

Sign in with Apple or Google and it all follows you — collected places, streak, daily history — restored on a new phone and kept in step across devices.

You don't need an account to play. Sign in when you want it backed up.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.1 — 2026-08-24

A small one — three things that were bothering us.

• There's a quiet Everywhen above today's date now, on the Today screen.

• You can star a place from the bottom of its story too, right next to "Open in Google Maps" — not only from the top.

• The place you unlock by watching an ad now joins the day's reading queue properly. It used to open on its own and leave you stuck at the end; now "Next place" takes you back to the scorecard like it should.

### 1.5 — 2026-08-13

This one is all polish — a pass over every screen, on a phone and an iPad, in dark mode and at the largest text sizes.

• The reveal now tells you how far off your year was, not only what the answer turned out to be. The map half always did that; the calendar half was keeping it to itself.

• At the biggest accessibility text sizes the scorecard ran off both edges of the screen. It stays put now, and so does everything else on that page.

• In dark mode, "Lock in where" was nearly invisible while it waited for your pin. You can see it the whole time.

• The coloured dots beside each place have a key now: which one is where, which is when, and what green through to red means.

• The guess screen starts higher up, so the map gets the room back.

• A walk that's only part-way out says so — "1 of 4 stops · 3 still to open" — instead of introducing itself as a one-stop walk.

• On iPad, the year picker sits under the photo and the clue instead of most of a screen below them.

• Tapping a pin in your Passport opens a card you can read, without the map showing through it.

• The recall question sits in the middle of the screen rather than leaving "Skip" stranded at the bottom.

• A few clues were blunter than they needed to be. They're warmer now, and they still don't give the date away.

• Smaller things: the bonus card stopped saying "one more place" twice, a place's date says which date it is, and a past day no longer cuts the answer's name in half.

### 1.4 — 2026-08-12

A calmer, kinder Everywhen.

• Past dailies got a quiet redesign. Days you've played fold into one neat line each —
a small filled dot, the date, your score — so the shelf reads at a glance, and the days
you haven't played yet stand out as the ones left to color in. A little progress bar up
top shows how much of the shelf is yours.

• Finish a day above 500 and you'll get confetti. You earned it.

• The line after each guess is friendlier now. When a place fools you, that's the
place's fault — it was hiding — and the reveal says so. Being wrong is how these stick.

• Tapping a photo to study it no longer shows a blank screen while the picture is still
downloading — you'll see it load, then zoom away.

• The era choices on the year step no longer get cut off at larger accessibility text
sizes.

• Tapping "Play the … round" on a place you haven't collected yet now takes you
straight to that day's round — a quick "Ready?" page, then the map — instead of
wherever the past-dailies screen happened to be. Closing it leaves you on Past
dailies, right at that day.

### 1.3 — 2026-08-11

New places don't wait for an app update any more.

PLACES THAT ARRIVE ON THEIR OWN
The catalogue used to be baked into the app, so a new place meant a new version and a wait for review. Now it just turns up. Nothing to tap, nothing to update.

LESS THAN HALF THE DOWNLOAD
Everywhen was carrying every photo inside the app, including a great many it could never show you. It isn't any more — the download is less than half what it was, and photos come down as you need them.

STILL WORKS WITH NO SIGNAL
A month of places and photos is kept on your phone, fetched over wifi and never on your cellular plan. That's the walk this app was built for: pocket, headphones, no bars.

YOUR STORAGE, YOUR CALL
Settings now shows exactly what Everywhen has downloaded, and lets you clear it whenever you like.

THE CLUES STOPPED GIVING IT AWAY
The one-line clue beside each guess had a habit of naming the century — which handed you the "when" half of the answer before you'd touched the slider. A hundred and forty-nine of them have been rewritten. The clue still helps. It just doesn't solve it for you.

FIXES
• A missing day has two very different causes — "we haven't written that far yet" and "we couldn't reach the catalogue" — and they now get two different screens instead of sharing one that guessed. "Try again" actually tries.
• Photos resolve the same way on the map, the card and the Passport, so a place looks like itself everywhere.
• The wry line on a reveal reads as an aside now, rather than one more fact to memorise.
• Storage says "None" instead of "Zero KB".

### 1.2 — 2026-08-09

Your Passport doesn't live on one phone any more.

SIGN IN, AND KEEP IT
Sign in with Apple or Google and everything syncs — the places you've collected, your streak, and your entire daily history. Get a new phone, sign in, and it's all there. Still completely optional: the app plays exactly the same signed out.

STAR THE ONES YOU LOVE
Any place you've collected can be starred, and starred places get their own section in the Passport and their own filter on the map and in the Library.

A CALMER DAILY ROUND
The map is now the whole canvas, with the clue floating over it — tap the clue to fold it away and get the screen. The buttons no longer move between steps, so your thumb can stay where it is. And the atlas drifting behind the Today screen finally drifts, instead of stuttering.

FIXES
• The streak agreed with itself: Today and the Passport could show different numbers on a restored device. They now come from one place.
• A way back out of a story, instead of only a way out of everything.
• Locked entries in the Library open the place you actually tapped.
• Smaller things throughout — the bonus card, the time picker, the sign-in screen.
