Search doesn't work. Whole thing is very slow. Hopelessly slow and sometime freezes when turning pages in portrait. Also, could not find full list of magazines available in app and could not purchase (had to purchase on website). Lots of improvement required. Get a feeling it's just a PDF reader with magazine links... Also, not happy about the fact that my subscription has ended and I only have access to the last magazine of my subscription. I would expect to get access to all the magazines I received during my subscription, as one would with hard-copies... Flip book navigation is nice but it really desperately needs two things: 1) offline reading. Currently magazines can only be read while connected, there should at least be an option for caching a few issues for offline use 2) text is scanned, not resolution independant. On the iPad 2 this wasn't too bad and not as noticeable until you zoomed in. On the new iPad it's very obvious and a lot of magazines have parts with quite small type. I compared one version of a magazine issue where I also had a PDF (using rendered not scanned text) and the difference was really remarkable. ### 3/5 — Does a job! *2012-02-25, version 5.1* I only use this app every now and then as I more often use their website. Now I cannot read any of my subscitpions. By the way the previous version started to crash as well, so I had not choice I had to "upgrade". Fed up with Apple, with Exact Editions and with other vendors for the fact that applications are adjusted to the new OS and once that done all those people who have old, not upgradeble OS supposed to suffer because of broken applications or rush and by new iPod touches. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — extremely poor experience *2025-06-04, version 13.0.2* Access to previously paid for content is cancelled once subscriptions expire - why would you bother with these conniving parasites. Also almost impossible to find a way to purchase subscriptions from the app anyway. They are clueless, have no direction, or interest in the services they are offering. I have no idea what the master plan is with these imposters. ### 1/5 — App completely useless *2025-04-28, version 13.0.2* I have a subscription to MMM and when I first downloaded this I could access the magazines. Frustrating! ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Customer friendly apps *2013-08-22, version 7.1* I'm actually using a good number of apps from Excactly and all are perfect apps, user friendly, clear, with non problems of any kind. Customer Service is always fast, clear and problem solver. I can recomend with confidence the "WIRE" app and the "JAZZWISE" app: is a pleasure to read your favorite magazine in the same way you can read a fisical copy of it, have it always with you and spend a fraction of the paper copy. I really recomend the "Exactly" app and all the magazine app they support. Try it out. Stefano Ferrando ### 4/5 — Love this app *2025-07-11, version 13.0.2* I subscribe to two magazines that I access digitally and read on my iPad— and I find that I much prefer it to a printed magazine. I find the interface very intuitive and easy to use. I love the click-through function and the fact that I can bookmark pages, photos, and articles for quick retrieval. But the best part is that I have access to years of back issues without having to actually store all that paper! My only frustration is that I cannot seem to find a list of other magazines they host. ### 4/5 — good app *2018-11-27, version 12.0.1* I like this app. I subscribe to Watercraft magazine and can read it on the web or with the app. I prefer the app. Works well landscape or portrait, easy page turn, fast page rendering, no hiccups. I just want to read my magazine and be able to refer back to older issues. The one area it would be nice to improve is the pdf saving of pages and article. Currently you save each page separately and then I use PDFExpert to assemble. BUT it has an annoying bug, which is that it very often takes two or three 'touch and swipes' to make a page scroll. This happens very often, but seemingly at random. If this were fixed I'd give it five stars. ### 4/5 — Best Kept Secret *2012-03-10, version 5.1* I've been a subscription based reader of Wire Alternative Music for a number of years. My frustration with the print media industry is that it does not an offer iPhone based or compatible means of reading their products, and when they do offer web access it doesn't read on Mobile Safari. Wire is available as a digital subscription, which I pay for, but had not been advertised as an iphone App. By accident I discovered this Exact Publications reader in the App Store. It is a breakthrough App, with easy navigation. My only difficulty has been downloading the entire magazines, instead of previewing pages, as it seems to need high speed wifi access. Once this App is refined for wobbly and lower speed wifi, it will be worthy of 4 stars. ### 4/5 — Not so awful! *2011-03-08, version 3.3* Not long ago, I labelled this e-mag app is the worst I've ever seen. I've since made more use of it as a subscriber to Gramophone, and while it still isn't as good as Wired, Monthly, PopSci+ and the New Yorker apps, I've revised my general opinion of it and, indeed, I've realized that some of my earlier criticism was unfair and a result of ignorance. So now I'm going to set the record straight. I'm still not a fan of the layout, which is essentially a copy of the standard magazine layout. To read a page, you need to drag it around, going back to the top when you reach the end of a column. But the quality of the image is good, and reading is quite straightforward. Provided you are subscribed to a magazine, it is possible to download and read issues offline. When done this way, the app is quite fast, with little to no page load time. But it is very slow when reading direct from the Internet. This latter only really applies to the sample magazines, because to see any other issues requires a subscription. The app embeds links (really well, with little green highlights that can be revealed and hidden with a tap) and flicking through pages on a downloaded magazine is actually quite easy and effective (my initial criticism was only applicable to magazines that aren't downloaded; in this case, flicking through is still annoyingly slow and blurry). It's also possible to pull up the contents page and jump from there, which is probably the quickest way to find things. One disappointment is the lack of other embedded content. For Gramophone, I would have expected audio samples and links to videos. Wired, PopSci+ and The New Yorker do this really well. I still say that someone at Exact Editions should speak to Conde Nast about their platform. But I have to eat my initially disparaging words (and thus I've edited them out of here). This is, actually, a fine app for reading magazine content. I expect to use it for magazines that don't have their own dedicated apps. And apologies to Exact Editions. You didn't deserve my initial broadside. ### 4/5 — Cool app. *2010-09-06, version 0* I like the free magazine concept. It would be nice though if the upcoming page was being downloaded/buffered while still on the current page. This way your experience would be much more fluid and enjoyable. ### 4/5 — Good but not perfect *2010-06-25, version 0* Exact Editions, for reading magazine subscriptions online using a web browser, has been around for a while. It is a bit clunky, but the new iPad edition is a big improvement. It is simple and easy to use, and gives a common interface to your magazines if you have several subscriptions with Exact Editions. With iPads fantastic display, the ability to select and move around a page and zoom using your fingers, make it for the first time, a pleasure to read an eMagazine. Unlike the browser version the app downloads the entire subscription magazine for reading offline, although it can take several minutes to do so, and can then be initially slow to load. NOTE: The free sample magazines available in the app can only be read online requiring an internet connection. Good, but not perfect. ### 4/5 — Great to reading Music Tech on the go *2010-05-24, version 0* Exactly is a magazine reader app. I use this app to read "Music Tech" on the go (I can't say anything about any other magazine on their current line up). As most apps, it's easy to navigate through the several issues of your chosen magazine. It's a bit slow when it comes to render each page but if you sync the magazine before you open it, it gets a lot better. On the iPhone screen is obviously small and it takes a lot of zooming and moving around the screen; but that's not the fault of the app. In all, they did a fine product for what it is.
