## What is Exoplanet Explorer?

Explore the universe of exoplanets — over 6,000 confirmed worlds orbiting distant stars, updated from leading scientific archives. Track new discoveries as they happen and dive into the data behind every planet.

EXPLORE THE COSMOS
Search, filter, and sort the complete catalogue of confirmed exoplanets. Find planets by discovery method, star type, orbital characteristics, or habitability potential. Every entry includes detailed scientific data from peer-reviewed sources.

ATMOSPHERIC SPECTRA
Browse JWST and Hubble transmission spectra for planets where atmospheric data is available. Toggle molecular overlays for CO2, CH4, H2O, CO and more to see which absorption features have been detected.

3D SYSTEM VIEW
Step into a planetary system in 3D — see each planet's orbit around its host star with realistic shading and a visualisation of the habitable zone. On iPhone and iPad you can also place a system into your environment in AR.

COMPARE WORLDS
Analyze exoplanets side-by-side — or compare them with Solar System planets like Earth, Jupiter, and Mars. Compare sizes, masses, orbital periods, star properties, and habitability scores to understand what makes each world unique.

HABITABLE ZONE VISUALIZATION
See exactly where planets orbit within their star's habitable zone — the region where liquid water could exist. Identify potentially Earth-like worlds and understand the conditions for life beyond our solar system.

FEATURES
• 6,000+ confirmed exoplanets with detailed scientific data
• Atmospheric spectra with molecular overlays
• 3D system view with AR mode
• Advanced filtering and sorting

### 5/5 — Finding a New Home

*2026-06-08*

Searches takes time

### 4/5 — Interactive star map

*2025-06-09*

I am using an Apple iPad. The interactive star map doesn’t work. I hope there is a fix for this, in the near future. Does it only work on the earlier versions of Exoplanet Explorer HD.

### 4/5 — Wish there was the option for a one time fee for premium features

*2024-11-16*

This is a fantastic app. Although I do wish there was a one time fee for premium features. I’d gladly pay $15-$20 for premium features one time but I can’t bring myself to pay on a subscription basis.

### 5/5 — An excellent astronomy app

*2024-09-01*

This should be a core app for anyone who ever wondered if we are alone in the universe. The ever growing list of planets and systems beyond our star is breathtaking. The app is easy to use and regularly updated so you’ll never miss a new neighbor. Scientists and Astronomers of all ages should have this on their phones. You qualify if you ever looked up and said “I wonder …”

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.5.0 — 2026-08-24

NEW IN 3.5.0:
• Official names: the few dozen planets carrying an IAU-approved name — Dimidium, Janssen, Galileo, Arion — now lead with it in planet details, and you can search for them by it
• Other designations: the same world is catalogued under different names by different surveys, so planet details now list them together. Kepler-90 i and KOI-351 b are one planet, and now it reads like one
• A Photometry section for the host system, collecting how bright it appears in each passband instead of scattering six magnitudes through the overview

IMPROVEMENTS:
• Planet radii now come straight from the archive in the unit you have chosen, rather than being converted from the other one, and every Solar System radius has been rebuilt on the IAU's reference values. A few figures shift slightly — these are the ones to trust
• The refresh control now turns while it works, instead of leaving a progress indicator stranded elsewhere in the row
• Bookmarked appears in Collections from the start, instead of only after something is in it

FIXED:
• The opening tour could crash if you paged past its last screen
• Home Screen widgets could show placeholder figures instead of live statistics
• In Arabic and other right-to-left layouts, the 3D system view could not be opened at all

### 3.4.1 — 2026-08-18

NEW IN 3.4.1:
• Collections: curated ways into the catalogue — potentially habitable worlds, our closest neighbours, the genuinely strange, and the famous firsts
• A guided tour on first launch: five screens showing what the app holds and where to start
• New-world notifications: an optional weekly summary when freshly confirmed planets arrive, with a "New this week" list to browse them
• Redesigned Apple Watch app — live exoplanet statistics and your bookmarked planets in full detail, synced from your iPhone
• New watch face complications for the total exoplanet count and a bookmarked planet of your choice

IMPROVEMENTS:
• A fresh look throughout, built on the new system design — glass toolbars, controls, and widgets across the catalogue, planet details, comparison, and the 3D system view
• Discovery methods are now translated in all 12 languages instead of always appearing in English
• Rebuilt Premium screen that leads with what Premium actually does, and a free trial for anyone who hasn't tried it yet
• The catalogue opens faster, and the 3D system view no longer competes with background data updates

FIXED:
• On iPad and Mac, selecting a planet now fills the detail pane beside the list instead of opening inside the list column and leaving the detail pane empty

### 3.3.3 — 2026-06-06

NEW IN 3.3.3:
• Fixed a crash that could happen when viewing a planetary system in AR mode

### 3.3.2 — 2026-06-04

NEW IN 3.3.2:
• Fixed a rare crash when scrolling the planet catalogue while data was refreshing in the background
• Planets opened from Spotlight, Shortcuts, or Universal Links now go straight to the planet detail

### 3.3.1 — 2026-05-29

NEW IN 3.3.1:
• Redesigned Solar System comparison in the 3D System View: orbits now overlay concentrically with the target so 1 AU lines up visually, planet labels adapt to the system's scale, and tap any body to focus the camera on it
