## What is Exploring Emotions?

Exploring Emotions is an SEL app that helps learners build emotional awareness, self-regulation skills, and coping strategies through interactive scenarios grounded in The Zones of Regulation® framework.

Built on the same principles as The Zones of Regulation Digital Curriculum (not included), the app gives learners a structured way to recognize emotions, understand triggers, and practice strategies for self-management. When used alongside the Zones Digital Curriculum, learners have an opportunity to practice, strengthen, and generalize regulation skills.

“Exploring Emotions is highly recommended for any educator working with students on emotional regulation.” — Jackie Bryla (A.C.T.)

Build emotional literacy through real scenarios:
Players navigate common school and social situations: a classroom, cafeteria, and park, learning to identify their Zones, reflect on goals, and explore regulation tools that support daily functioning. This approach reinforces core SEL concepts: emotional regulation, perspective taking, and flexible thinking.

Key Features:
- Audio narration supports accessibility and models communication.
- Data tracking strengthens reflection by letting learners log their Zones, identify patterns, and share insights with educators or caregivers.
- Customizable Toolbox with dozens of coping strategies and self-regulation tools.
- Replayable scenarios that support practice, problem-solving, and skill generalization.
- Mini games that connect emotional reactions to real-time decision making.
- Multiple real-life environments that strengthen social-emotional learning.
- Embedded references to The Zones curriculum for deeper instructional support.

Designed for flexible use across SEL settings:
Exploring Emotions supports Pre-K through secondary students and is also applicable for adults working on emotional regulation. It can be used in classrooms, therapy settings, and at home as part of a broader SEL or behavioral health program. Adult facilitation enhances skill transfer and strengthens connections to everyday life.

Educators, therapists, and families use the app to reinforce emotional regulation, self-management, and coping strategies taught through The Zones framework.

### 5/5 — I LOVE IT

*2023-09-01*

It helps me stay focused. It reminds me of school.

### 2/5 — Good but limited!

*2022-10-19*

My kids absolutely loved working through the game, which took hardly any time (less than half hr). However, there is just one game/ day to work through, then that is it unless you want to do the same, short scenarios over and over and over again. They were really looking forward to working through different days. Ended up amusing themselves for a little bit by seeing what happens when they choose the wrong answers on purpose 😔 OK if you realise the game side is like a short practice/ test of what they have learnt and then it’s over. They can choose to continue to graph their feelings/zones throughout the day, which is of course good reflection, but not as motivating for kids to actually do.

### 1/5 — Very disappointed

*2021-10-14*

Pointless

### 1/5 — Not worth money

*2020-05-15*

Only 1 game throughout the app. Not worth the price

### 2/5 — It is very difficult to navigate and repeat the same situation all the time

*2020-05-11*

I am not happy with it because it has only a few situation to navigate.

### 1/5 — Don’t waste your money

*2019-01-25*

This app is earful

### 2/5 — Wish it had sound

*2017-05-05*

Bought this for my daughter, paid 10 bucks, none of the sounds work. Went into settings and they are turned on... Please update for iPads.

### 2/5 — Frustrating and confusing

*2017-04-11*

The overall look is fine and the information slower and different than the original. The most frustrating part is the games don't play well and getting through the park scenarios needs more clarification. Some kids don't want to play the food fight or basketball and there is no way to opt out that we've found.

**Developer response:** You can opt out of the food fight by visiting the options menu. There is a toggle box in there to disable the food fight. This will allow the user to skip it every time. As for the flow of the app: that's unfortunate to hear your experience has not been positive. We are open to suggestions for future updates, and we do plan to integrate new content, so such feedback could be helpful. Thanks for the review.

### 2/5 — Needs update

*2017-03-06*

The game does not do well keeping track of progress! If you have more than 5 kids it seems to loose information. If this is corrected, I would gladly give it 5 stars

**Developer response:** The app has been updated a few times since this review. If you are still experiencing issues with data storage please let us know and we'll be happy to look into things.

### 2/5 — Save your money

*2016-02-16*

I bought the first zones app right when it came out and have thoroughly enjoyed usIng it. When this one came out, I bought it right away too. Unfortunately, there just isn't much content. what is there is good but there is only one mini game and my students quickly lost interest in playing. Not worth $10! The first zones app is however worth purchasing!
