However, I like the explanation and discussion portion of the study as well as different levels of practice. I have been using Dauntless test prep software for all my knowledge tests because I like to understand what’s behind the correct answer. Also I find making a phone call to get Shepherds Air app way too … unnecessary ### 4/5 — Close Enough! *2021-11-18* I used this to study for FOI. I got a 90%. I got a good amount of questions I hadn’t seen before on the actual exam. But the questions on this app were close enough. I’m studying for FIA now. Shepherd Air has a better question bank. But this app has multiple tests (like FOI + FIA), and does a good job with the explanation to every question. I also like the question stack system, which helps you focus on weak areas. Great app overall! ### 3/5 — Good course, UX not so much *2020-01-31* I’ve been using the app for a couple of months now. I am pleased with the course, and the explanations are well written and the illustrations aare exceptionally informative. I particularly appreciate the author's commentary frequently provided! But the problem is that the UI is only adequate. I really appreciate the ability to adjust the font size on the questions but why doesn't the explanation pages offer the same capability, there is a lot more to read and it is way too small. Worse, it is not responsive, when you do zoom in, it doesn't reflow so you are constantly panning left to right and back. That is very distracting making it very difficult to learn. Also, there should be a score shown as you progress through the questions. Finally, I would ask that the session be saved automatically and offered to resume when returning. Ideally saved, not just on the device but, the session saved in the cloud so that the switch from phone to tablet, or vice-versa, is seamless. ### 3/5 — Don't pay for audio *2019-04-24* Look as a reference it's not bad. Allows you to go though questions and understand where you went wrong by showing to text after, on the topic. The audio isn't worth the extra you pay, It should be included. Especially at the price it is and the extra content you get that isn't overly useful. I only needed it for instructor exam. Other stuff is a small bonus but not that much. Would get a four or five but have to manually save each time I use it so I don't get repeated questions, and paid for audio that I don't think is worth it so it gets a 3 ### 3/5 — Harsh customer service *2018-08-23* Great app, don’t expect friendly customer support though, I found an error on a question and was sent a response by Martin THE CFI who did not take time to look into it, instead just told me to quit crying and waisting his time. Very sad, a great app, pour customer support Not sure how to study if material is not 100% accurate ### 5/5 — Great way to prepare *2016-11-27* I just completed my Commercial rating and it was made easier thanks to this app. Also used it on the CFI FOI test so far too. I studied using the ASA books, and that was a great thorough study, but then added a few rounds of this app to prepare for the written. I got a score in the 90's with no problem. I really like the question stacks and the ability to get immediate explanations configured to display either all the time, or only when you get one wrong. It's a great package. I didn't really use the check ride prep one much, but I should before my CFI. For my CFI FOI test today and scored in the mid 90's as well, so you can bet I'll be using this for the FIA test as well. ### 5/5 — Great App *2016-11-20, version 9.6.11* Overall a great app to help prepare for both ground and flight instructors. Helpful for both initial and CFI renewal too. ### 5/5 — Best app I found for CFI Knowledge Test *2016-02-11* I had used a competitor's web only product for my Commercial a couple years back and wanted something I could use offline for CFI. After buying a competitor's iPad app and realizing it was quite basic (read limited) a buddy told me about Dauntless. He had used Dauntless for Commercial/CFI/ATP and raved about it. After using it myself I was really impressed. The explanation for the answer to each question is very complete. The reason for the answer is very completely presented including the reference to the appropriate FAA text or rule, the steps to reach the solution etc. As a bonus, the presentation is in color which makes the whole process a bit easier. Highly recommended. ### 5/5 — Great study guide *2016-02-05, version 9.6.3* These apps are great as study guides. The only things they're missing are a virtual exam mode (while it will quiz you, it's not a replica of the real exam) and the ability to get a sign off. The study progress website that's part of the package is a real hidden gem - if you take enough practice tests, it will show you exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are. ### 5/5 — Great app! *2015-12-08, version 9.6.3* I recommend this app to everyone who is studying for knowledge exams. ### 5/5 — The only way to study for FAA knowledge tests *2014-09-06* I use GroundSchool to study for all my FAA knowledge tests. What is great about the CFI app is that it gives you everything you need for the CFI knowledge tests. Initial CFI? You have the initial flight instructor test for your aircraft class and the Fundamentals of Instruction. Want to add on a ground instructor certificate? Practice that, too. Adding on another class? The app has lifetime updates and you can go back to it, update the content, and dive right back in. If you don't know what you plan to do in aviation, the lifetime update feature is worth its weight in gold. My results have been great on every knowledge test. i have yet to get a score lower than the mid-90s. To the previous reviewer who said that the app doesn't have the exact questions on the test, that's true due to changes the FAA has made. But GroundSchool teaches you how to approach questions, with mnemonics and an awesome explanation feature that teaches you how to think and how to approach any similar class of question, so you don't need to memorize the answers to be successful. ### 3/5 — Be aware *2014-05-04, version 9.5.8* Great interface and about as enjoyable as studying hundreds of questions can be, but one serious flaw. A fair amount of answers to the test prep questions will not be the same as on the FAA written (which is the whole reason for this app). To be fair, there is a section that allows you to submit discrepancies but the way I see it, my job is to pay the 35 bucks for the app and do the studying. Dauntless's job is to make the study guide accurate for the test I will be taking. Not saying don't get the app but be prepared to cross check quite a few answers with an additional study guide (which kinda kills the convenience) in the first place. ### 5/5 — FOI exam *2013-12-10* So, I had been studying for my FOI a few weeks, mainly from the Aviation Instructor''s Handbook. I was bogged down in the stale reading and making no progress till I was sitting waiting for the mechanic to finish work on a rental plane when an older gentlemen struck up discussion and when asked about my goals he told me about your programs. I loaded them onto my IPAD and went to work. I worked the sections individually and then, stacked them as I completed the next. Using al of the handy tools from flash card mode to the decks. The greatest advantage was not just memorizing the answers but, the reference backed up each question ( I love the commentary on the crazy FAA questions). This says that someone took time and really put together a good product with research beyond the books. In two weeks time, studying solely but reference to Dauntless I was smoking through the 438 question bank in about 15 minutes with 99% accuracy. I walked into the test center today and there was another student waiting to take the FOI. He had the appointment before me but, was hesitant to pull the trigger on his $150 exam. I took his time slot commenting confidently, " trust me, I won''t be long". In 9 minutes, YES, nine, I smoked the 50 question exam with %100. The guy behind me not so lucky. True story! Great program! ### 4/5 — Great app, but.. *2013-11-26, version 9.5.4* A well thought out app. Could be even better if I could print out or somehow save the complete explanations to questions I get wrong. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Buggy and un updated app. *2023-01-29* If you are running newer devices like iPhone 14 or a M power iPad, forget about it. Will crash. They clearly don’t care about updating the app, it is still framed for the old style iPad screens, black bars on either side of the frame. Obvious they care very little about the customer and put as minimal effort into the app to get it over the line… Disappointing. ### 1/5 — Don’t buy!! Waste of money! *2022-02-04* I just left the CFI written exam and I passed with a 71 however I haven’t see probably 75% of the questions on the exam. I started using dauntless for my private and it was good then but it’s progressively gotten worse with each rating. I gave myself 2 weeks to prep for this exam and I’ve gone through probably over 5,000 practice questions. I sat down today and take the actual exam and I’ve never felt more helpless and underprepared. Save your money and go with a different test prep program. ### 1/5 — Not so great... *2020-09-08* Use Sheppard Air. I have used both and there is no comparison. Sheppard gets my students ready much faster and results in much higher test scores. Dauntless last staff is callous and difficult to access. They don't have a phone number to reach them with, and are generally slow to respond with an email. The opposite is true with Sheppard. ### 1/5 — Terrible Customer Service *2020-03-03* I reached out to Dauntless to get some advice on the AGI test I would be taking in a few days after my FIA. My FIA test results were passing, but not ideal. Instead of giving me advice they belittled me and said I didn’t study enough and I’m pouty about my score. Not very customer service friendly. Also the questions on simulated tests were repeated over and over. Look else where. ### 1/5 — Not representative of FAA test bank and many inaccurate answers *2014-02-26, version 9.5.5* They have a number of inaccurate answers (I.e "Which middle level clouds are characterized by rain, snow, or ice pellets posing a serious icing problem if temperatures are near or below freezing?"). I would take up all 6000 characters if I pasted all of their errors. I only figured it out because I also read the FAA books and am using other study methods for test prep. They also don't have a quality representation of the questions that appear on the test. I scored a 94% on the FOI and would have done much worse if I just relied on Dauntless. ### 1/5 — Does not work! Won't open!!!! *2012-12-30, version 9.0* Does NOT WORK! App won't open!!! ### 1/5 — All Kinds of Wrong Information *2012-08-27, version 8.7* Glad I used software from another company before going to take my FOI written exam. This app has so much wrong information and poorly written questions it's not even funny - even after the update is completed. After going to another company's software I took my test and got a 96. This app is junk. Be careful. ### 1/5 — Outdated test questions (FOI) *2011-08-27, version 8.2* This FOI software is out of date, and it does NOT contain the actual/latest bank of test questions. Even with the automated update feature, it did not download the latest set of actual questions. When taking the actual test with CATS, many unfamiliar questions appeared in the test, i.e., never seen during the study session with the Dauntless software. Will now have to search for another study method... ### 1/5 — Don't buy for FOI, FIA *2011-04-17, version 8.0* Repeatedly aced the FOI test on the practice software... Managed only a 74 on the actual test. Software not even close to being current with the revised test question bank. Save your money and get a better score by just reading the FAA publications. Not much better for the FIA test, most of the newly revised questions are straight out of the Airplane flying handbook. ### 2/5 — Not impressed *2017-05-29, version 9.6.3* Many simple questions repeated, and yet entire subject areas were missing from the material. Not sufficient as a sole source of preparation, and for the price it should be. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — FOI Written 96% *2021-12-18* I used Dauntless to study for Fundamentals of Instruction. Now I’m preparing for Ground Instructor Advanced. Then I will do Flight Instructor Airplane after that. The app allows you to select which test you want to study for, and what method of study based on how well you know the material. I also bought the optional voice option so I could listen to questions and answers in the car. I recommend Dauntless apps for anyone preparing for an FAA written test. ### 5/5 — Great test prep app *2021-02-26* I love the current and up to date question database and the fact that you can continuously update so you have all current questions is amazing. This app is invaluable! ### 5/5 — Great way to study *2020-06-18* I have tried to use other applications to help me study for various FAA tests but they would have outdated questions or it would only be a final test and not help with the preparation of the test. I believe that the work that was put into this app but all the other apps that they have made is extremely well thought out and done in a fashion that makes it easy for the user to customize what they need to study for and what they are having trouble remember for the test. They also have amazing customer support for any questions that you have or any problems you have with the app. I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to study for an FAA test and be able to study anywhere at anytime. ### 5/5 — FIG *2020-06-11* Passed my FIG flight instructor glider exam with a 94%! Pleased to say that this study material is excellent! The questions on my real test were spot on with the study material! Definitely 10/10 would recommend if you are looking to take the FIG exam! ### 5/5 — Great value and proven performance *2019-07-24* I took the FOI first time and failed, missed it by 2 questions - it was really frustrating as it’s not an easy topic because the subject matter is not similar to many other types of aviation knowledge- I got the Dauntless CFI app and studied for a week until I practice tested > 85% consistently- the explanations were thorough and richly referenced but also easy to comprehend and I found the info easy to correlate after only a few hours - the learning stuck pretty well, I walked in confidently and I scored a 90% on the retest in 25 minutes ### 5/5 — Awesome software, great value *2019-02-06* Rapidly knocked many years of rust off. Very intuitive, and easy to use. Allows study from my phone whenever I get a few minutes.
