Winner Corona App of the Week! Factor samurai is a great way to learn times tables. You play as the samurai whose sacred duty is to cut all the numbers down to their prime factors. You will be thrown one number after the next, cut them up if they can be factored into smaller values, if not, if they are prime, do not cut them. Prime numbers are numbers that cannot be divided into small whole numbers. Two, three, five, seven, eleven, and thirteen are all examples of prime numbers. Four is not prime because it can be broken down in the whole numbers two times two. Factor Samurai will reinforce the arithmetic principles of multiplication and division by continually challenging the player to remember which numbers can be factored into smaller values, and which ones can't. As the player slices numbers into factors, those factors can be broken down further, until they are split into their prime factors. Knowing that 63 is 3 times 3 times 7 or that 128 is 2 raised to the seventh power (7 twos!) is how you become a true Factor Samurai! Factor Samurai is used extensively in the classroom. Je trouve intéressant le fait que, contrairement à fruit ninja, on ait des chances, ce qui rend le jeu moins punitif, puisque des fois, sous la panique, il peut arriver de toucher un nombre premier accidentellement. Je trouve aussi intéressant que l’on ait à trancher des nombres plusieurs fois ( par exemple 12 ce divisera en 4 et en 3, il faudra retrancher le 4 afin d’arriver à tous les nombres premiers). On regrettera des bugs, tels que des crashs ou encore le fait que, en mode maître le bouton rejouer ramène au niveau intermédiaire. Je n’ai également toujours pas compris à quoi servais le sabre doré. So many apps are just flash cards with a theme but this is different. Kids also get familiar with recognizing prime numbers quickly and just how composite some numbers are. I REALLY wish I could increase the size of the numbers to 100 and beyond though. Draws you in and keeps you coming back for more trying to beat your score. ### 5/5 — Fantastically Fun and Deceptively Educational *2016-03-16, version 1.74* This app has Samurais in it which makes it intrinsically sweet and worth 5 stars by itself, but once my child tried it, that's when the magic happened. It’s addicting and fun to play, and feels more like a video game than a math lesson. The artwork is also appealing, the music adds to the intensity with incredibly satisfying swiping sounds (ah the splat of a divisible number), and I liked being able to get new swords and faster number tosses as we progressed in the game. A great way for children to learn, or for an adult to dust up on, some fundamental math skills. Thank you, Factor Samurai, my child and I are now Times Table geniuses! ### 5/5 — Fun and simple game *2015-10-27, version 1.72* To be honest I haven't done math since I finished school, so my friend recommended this app as a fun way to "refresh number memories". I've been playing it frequently since. The game is easy to understand, quick to load, changes every round, and I don't feel shy playing it when I'm on on public transit :) ### 1/5 — Everyday racism *2015-04-24, version 1.72* It would be even better if it didn't use racial stereotypes as it's theme. This reinforces negative tropes. Too bad. ### 4/5 — Recommended *2015-03-24* Great concept, well executed: this game is elegantly simple but challenging and addictive. It works well as math practice for kids, but adults looking on will itch to try it too. It doesn't get old (hasn't yet) because it keeps nudging you on with more and higher numbers. We would wish for multiple user profiles. A font for the numbers in which six and nine are clearly different, even without the underline, might also be useful.
