## What is Family Chess?

Family Chess is real chess for you and your kid, sharing one iPhone or iPad.
Lay the device flat on the table between you: their half of the screen faces
them, yours faces you. No accounts, no chess robot — just the two of you. You
do not need to know chess to play.

ONE MEMBERSHIP, YOUR WHOLE FAMILY

A Family Chess membership unlocks the whole app, and one membership can cover
up to 6 people through Apple Family Sharing. Two players or six, it is the same
membership. Every feature and every piece style is included with membership.

WHY IT WORKS

• KID POWER — five levels (Even match, Little help, Head start, Big boost,
Superhero boost) that trade YOUR original queen and rooks down, all the way
to pawns. Before or during an unfinished game, a safe dial change updates
every surviving power piece together right away. Captured pieces stay
captured. If the request is unsafe, an inline note leaves the board alone —
nothing is queued for a later move. After the game ends, its board stays
fixed and the selected level is ready for the next game. Both players still
  play to win.
• GLOWING MOVE DOTS — tap any piece, even out of turn, and every square it
could reach lights up. That is how the moves get learned: by playing.
• SHOW MY MOVES — one press on their side of the table draws every move they
can make right now, in a quiet five-second wave.
• HINTS THAT TURN TO FACE THEM — gentle, wordy nudges ("look for a piece that
is lonely") appear rotated toward their side of the table.
• TABLE GAMES — Pawn Race, First Catch, King of the Hill, and Three Checks:
short games with real chess rules, for the nights nobody has forty minutes.
• GROWTH JOURNAL — games played together, how Kid Power came down over time,
and the date of the first checkmate won with no hints and no take-backs. One
tap makes a milestone card you can share; nothing leaves the device unless
  you send it yourself.
• PARENT TIPS — one short, practical card at the start of a game, written for
the grown-up holding the rail, plus a family challenge to try each week.
• 11 PIECE ART STYLES — Classic, Cartoon, Modern, Storybook, Royal Glow,
Tournament, Chessnut, Candy, Clay Toy, Painted, and Wooden. Let them argue
  about it.
• A SWIPEABLE PARENT RAIL — every control lives in a slim bar at your edge and
never interrupts the board. Swap sides, start fresh, lock take-backs, toggle
  chimes.

Real rules underneath: castling, en passant, promotion (with a picker that
faces whoever earned it), checkmate, stalemate, and draws — and an end-of-game
card that faces both of you and tells the truth about how the game actually
ended.

Players are saved on the device with their own name and color, so the app
remembers who is playing and where each of them sits on the Kid Power ladder.

The game runs on your device with no accounts, ads, or analytics. Gameplay
works offline after Apple has loaded and verified membership; loading plans,
buying, restoring, and managing membership require an App Store connection.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.3 — 2026-08-17

SWAP SIDES, NOTHING ELSE. Swap Sides now turns the board with a smooth
animation and keeps the current position, turn, and move history exactly where
they are.

YOUR GAME COMES BACK. An in-progress game now survives closing the app,
restarting the device, or temporarily losing membership access. Promotion,
hints, take-backs, Kid Power, and whose turn it is all come back too.

KID POWER STAYS HONEST. During an unfinished game, a safe dial change updates
every surviving power piece together right away. Captured pieces stay captured.
Unsafe changes are refused inline and never queued for a later move. Once the
game is over, its board stays fixed and the selected level applies to the next
game.

SMALL THINGS NOW DO WHAT THEY SAY. Picking the already-active player or Table
Game keeps playing instead of restarting. Favourite moves are truly saved in
the Growth Journal. “Watch the last three moves” now plays all three in order,
with the arrow pointing at the move being shown.

We also tightened crash recovery around finished games, promotions, player
changes, and Growth Journal saves.

### 1.2 — 2026-08-08

This one is big. The version you have predates the whole relaunch, so here is everything that changed.

ONE SIMPLE MEMBERSHIP. One membership now unlocks everything, for up to 6 people through Family Sharing. No locked features, no second thing to buy, nothing held back for a higher tier.

TABLE GAMES. Pawn Race, First Catch, King of the Hill, and Three Checks — short games played with real chess rules, for the nights nobody has forty minutes.

GROWTH JOURNAL. Every finished game is written down: who played, what Kid Power was set to, whether hints were used, how it ended. It tells the story parents actually care about — the handicap coming down over time — and marks the date of the first checkmate won with no hints and no take-backs. One tap makes a milestone card worth keeping.

KID POWER IS FIVE TAPS. The balance dial became five named levels — Even match, Little help, Head start, Big boost, Superhero boost — that you can change mid-game without a fight with the toolbar. It can now hand the advantage to either side, so two kids can play a fair game, and after three clean wins it quietly suggests stepping down a level.

TAP ANY PIECE. Tapping a piece shows where it could go even when it is not that player's turn, so nobody gets a dead tap while the grown-up is thinking.

SHOW MY MOVES. A button on their side of the table draws every move they can make right now, in a slow five-second wave that is calm enough to read.

PARENT TIPS AND WEEKLY CHALLENGES. A short, practical card for the grown-up at the start of a game, and a new family challenge to try each week.

11 PIECE STYLES AND SAVED PLAYERS. All eleven sets are included, and each saved player keeps their own name, color, and Kid Power level.

FIRST TIME? START HERE. A few skippable screens for grown-ups who do not play chess. You really do not need to know the rules.

FIXES FROM OUR OWN KITCHEN TABLE. The kid's pieces now face the kid. Move lines paint under the pieces like chalk on a real board. The end of a game is a two-sided card both players can read instead of an alert facing one of them. The membership screen uses the whole sheet on every size. And a full audit of the chess rules themselves fixed en passant, castling, promotion, stalemate, and draw detection.
