Avoid upgrading if you can. The version shipped in late August 2026 is a turd. ### 3/5 — UI issue *2026-08-03, version 4.13.0* Great service and app normally but the recent update has now made the UI scaling really tiny and fonts are really small! Can’t see any setting to chane this beyond selecting their font or the system font which makes no difference to scaling. ### 3/5 — No option to change tiny font size *2026-07-09, version 4.12.0* I like Fastmail but the font size on iPhone is tiny and there is no setting to change this. And it does not respond to font size changes in system. It’s not good. ### 3/5 — UI - readability issues in many areas *2026-07-04, version 4.10.0* On mobile - I had to configure iOS (Apple mail - which I wanted to get away from!) to get my email instead of their app bc of all the font inconsistencies that made it too hard to read and compose email. Bugs with fonts on desktop as well. Font sizes change suddenly without any way to fix it. No word search once you are inside an email - weird. Calendar - my scheduling is in serious danger bc you cannot tell what month you are in - on both mobile and desktop. Cannot tell if there is any rhyme or reason to their choices. I don’t know what they were thinking. Readability should be the priority and they have not done that. The one time I reached out to support to report a bug the support person framed it as a preference which was dismissive and disingenuous. I don’t think I will want to spend more time reporting issues when it just goes into a void. ### 3/5 — Great service, terrible mobile app *2026-05-27, version 4.7.1* It seems that no one at Fastmail uses the iOS App. I hope one day you folks create a native app, because the service is great but the app is unfortunately buggy and clunky, and there is no other option with all the Fastmail features available. ### 2/5 — Launches to black screen A LOT *2026-05-11, version 4.6.7* This app is overall good, but it launches to a black screen A LOT. I have to kill the app entirely and re-open it for it to load. I added rules to classify mail as it comes in. Fastmail uses Sieve for its rules engine. It does things that Outlook/Exchange can’t do. Fastmail search works far better than Outlook and it is very fast. It works well for daily email, has a clean design, and is less distracting than many big email apps. I like that it feels made for people who actually want control over their inbox. My main complaint is that some settings and advanced features can feel less polished or less intuitive than Gmail or Apple Mail. ### 2/5 — Notification actions are broken *2026-05-03, version 4.6.7* There's only about a 10% chance that when you tap on a notification it’ll actually open the email. The rest of the time it just dumps you in the inbox and then you have to manually go and find the email. The same with notification actions like Delete: the chances that it’ll actually delete the email are incredibly low (and even lower if you’re trying it from a notification on your Apple Watch). I don’t know why this is so hard for them to fix. It’s been like this for years. No other app has this problem. Every time I’ve submitted a support ticket about this they just tell me to reinstall the app, which doesn’t help. Please, I’m begging you, fix this bug. ### 2/5 — frustrating - new mail red badge won’t disappear *2026-04-21, version 4.6.6* I appreciate a red badge that notifies me on the ipad app when new mail has arrived, but this red badge then refuses to disappear after I open the mail message. app is up to date, iPadOS is upto date, closing app doesn’t fix this. i have logged a ticket 2 months ago but this bug still hasn’t been fixed. ### 2/5 — Notifications Action *2026-04-07, version 4.6.6* When I receive a notification and take an action on it like “delete” it doesn’t delete I open the app and it shows the mail I received even though I deleted it by swiping down the notification and delete the received mail. In app Notes doesn’t support apple pencil which makes no sense of writing notes it’s just as a notepad where notes should be typed. ### 4/5 — HTML view shows toooo small on phone? *2026-04-02, version 4.6.6* Can you please fix it? No one in my company is able to use it otherwise, too small text in HTML view. ### 4/5 — Requires Updating Swipe Settings *2026-03-30, version 4.6.6* When scrolling up/down with my thumb in the inbox, it is too easy to swipe slightly to the left and delete a random email. Fastmail support response: You can increase the movement required to trigger an action by changing it to a long swipe only, or even disable the swipe actions entirely, in Settings → Custom Swipes. The app is pretty good. My issues with it are that it’s basically just the website in an app. It doesn’t support background refresh. You have to wait a few seconds to see new emails load when you open the app. It’s pretty basic and plain and sort of dated as far as design goes but contains all features and options the web app offers. (You only need to go to the website for billing. You can do everything else in the app.) The aliases and masked email features are top notch and so is their support team. The new update arbitrarily chunks your message list into separate groups with obnoxious, redundant headers, destroying a clean chronological workflow. If you try to disable the separate grouping to fix the visual clutter, it dumps your pinned messages back into the regular message stream—rendering the pin feature completely useless. Users chose Fastmail for speed, efficiency, and a clean interface, not for forced visual segmentation and feature creep that nobody asked for. Now it can take from 1 to 2 minutes just to get into the app! Bring back the old fast version!! ### 1/5 — great service, buggy app *2025-10-09, version 4.6.0* Ive been using fastmail for about 6 years now. The fastmail service is great but this app is buggy. The main reason I was using this app instead of apple mail is because the fastmail app easily allows replying with aliases (*@mydomain.com). However it turns out apple mail can do this, but the caveat is you have to manually set up the account (skipping past the error that it cant connect via SSL, and going back and manually setting the port to 465), and then manually adding each alias, and manually selecting the alias at send time. That’s all very cumbersome, but preferable to the bugs in this app. The iOS app just hangs all the time. For example, almost every time I click a notification, the app just shows some orbiting circles. it doesn’t matter how long I leave it, it never resumes and I have to swipe the app out and restart, losing track of whatever email I was trying to see. as of today, the app doesn’t work at all. even after swiping out, it just will not load anything. ### 1/5 — iOS26 not working *2025-10-02, version 4.5.1* It used to work fine ### 1/5 — Great email service! I cannot believe in this day and age it takes them 24 hours to update a password. It’s utterly ludicrous to think that you would lock people out of their accounts for 24 hours for a password reset. And good luck getting ahold of anyone. I prefer it to the GMail app which I also use. Private and pretty secure. No ads. Multiple aliases. However I ONLY use it to send mail from my own custom domains. That process has always been a bit janky at best but I had it working. Then I read that they are getting rid of the "send as" alias feature for free accounts. Even workspace accounts are somewhat more limited than I liked. Down the rabbit hole I went. Someone recommended Fastmail, so I started researching and experimenting along with several other solutions including just using the email service I could have with my web host since I already pay for that anyway. The more I dove into Fastmail the more impressed I was. I loved everything about it. It just feels smoother, better, more elegant, customizable, and well thought out in every way. I was going to wait and see if/when my Gmail aliases stopped working before jumping to another service, but after dipping my toe in, I just made the jump yesterday. Now all my domains are here and it feels like home. The whole process was easy. Importing all my mail, contacts, filtering rules, and domains. Syncing my contacts with my iPhone. GREAT documentation on everything including setting up the DNS records at Cloudflare. Hopefully I never need to switch again because Fastmail absolutely rocks. Just really, really impressed. I haven't even had to deal with support yet to find out how that is. ### 5/5 — Glad I switched back *2026-08-03, version 4.13.0* I had a Fastmail subscription many years ago. After having issues with my current email hosting service I decided to switch back. Everything has improved significantly. Love the dedicated apps, migration feature and generous storage. It’s a great example of an app that does what it needs to do, very well, in an unobtrusive way. Using the separate Apple Mail and Calendar apps now feel like a backwards step - well done! ### 5/5 — Switch to Fastmail. You won’t regret it *2026-07-23, version 4.13.0* Fastmail has tons of flexibility and features, but does a great job of staying out of your way. And being able to reach out directly to real humans for support is incredible. Plus, having masked emails built in, custom aliases, and unlimited(!!) custom domains and catch-all addresses is unlike ANY other email provider that I’m aware of. And trust me, I’m aware of almost all of them. The company is employee/owned, so no mega-corps here. Plus, according to job listings on their website, their support staff is unionized, which is awesome! As far as alternatives are concerned, Gmail and others scan your emails for targeted advertising, which is just not good. Plus, they’re the incumbent, so they haven’t had to meaningfully innovate in over a decade. Proton advertises end to end encryption for your emails, but that’s only really true when you email another proton user. At that point, just use Signal; it’s WAY better. Fastmail has a whole blog post on this topic. Best email switch I’ve made ### 5/5 — Finally an Email Service Focused on Email *2026-05-14, version 4.6.7* After using Microsoft 365 and iCloud+, I switched everything to Fastmail for my personal and business domains, and honestly it has been a great experience. The app is extremely fast, clean, and focused without all the extra clutter and upselling. Email, contacts, and calendar sync perfectly between my iPhone and Mac. I also really like that Fastmail feels simple but still very powerful. Push notifications are instant, the interface is clean, and managing custom domains was much easier than expected. A lot of reviews here complain about things that honestly haven’t been an issue for me.
