Plus flaws *2016-09-19, version 1.0.3* I LOVED this game the characters are unique and funny, extreme replay value ( have fun finding all of the dialogue variations), and the story line is rather intriguing if I say so myself; however, I think that the stat mechanic is to basic. At 55% resourcefulness I passed every single resourceful test I had, ( conversely I failed every single faithful test at 45%) I think that the stat system needs to be more complex than just is it above 50%. A different problem ( more of a personal thought really) is the romance subplot, I see this in every single choice of games release a lack of a multiple partners option. I want to feel as if I am the protagonist and I want to deal with the effects of my actions, in the world or in my character's personal relationships. I would like to see an option where I could convince Brigid AND patch AND Silvia to date my character ( not an easy brain-dead dialogue option mind you, but a grueling drawn out process that takes surgical precision to accomplish or a social hand grenade goes off in your face.) in summary this is an awesome game that has some very human flaws, but is a gem that any role-playing fan would enjoy. ### 5/5 — Amazing *2016-07-23, version 1.0.2* It was an amazing story to be a part of! Can't recommend enough! ### 4/5 — 4.5 Stars; Endings a concern *2016-02-18, version 1.0.2* A few minutes ago, I finished my first playthrough of the Fatehaven ‘choose your own adventure’-style app. I enjoyed the experience, to my surprise. Despite a lack of lore and mythos, the writers did a fantastic job creating a framework for the story so my imagination could fill in the blanks. Even though there were a few grammatical errors, I found the world believable and the characters likeable. Overall, the first 80-90% of the story was awesome. My only issue was how my first playthrough ended. Without spoiling things, the ending I got depicts the story reaching a crescendo with the rescue of a damsel in distress, introducing an even bigger threat to the world in the story, forcing the player through an unexpectedly mind-boggling plot mechanic, then *poof* -it’s done. No facing the bigger threat, no explanation of what just happened, nothing. It’s almost like skipping the last big battle scene of ‘Return of the Jedi’: one minute Luke meets Darth Vader and the Rebel ships are heading into battle, the next minute sees the Emperor dead and the Death Star destroyed. Technically the transition might work, but it leaves way too many details and explanations out and a LOT of questions unanswered. I realize a project like this is a massive amount of work for the developers. I applaud how they were able to make the player’s choices seem to matter to the story and how they were able to create a believable world. I recommend playing this game if you have a few bucks burning in your pocket. I’m very interested in playing again, but I’m hesitant to do so if the other five endings are like that. The story is fixed, however this game has a solid replay value with its romantic interests (Patch is the best!!). At first it starts off good and simple. But in the middle it's a little confusing because a big shift happens and it kinda messes everything up. Then it's all good and you think, I could rate this a 5. But then a terrible and ridiculously confusing ending happens that completely ruins the story. So I give it a 3 for overall a good game, it just dropped the ball is all. But at least it's fairly cheap and when you get spells the detail to what you can do is incredible. A good fantasy book. However, I paid for a fu**ing game, not a book. It gives no choice whatsoever, since the choices literally change nothing, even the dialogues stay the same. And there are pages eith several hubdreds words and not even a choice at the end. Worst ever done by Hosted games. Download this only if it's free, don't pay a penny for it, it's not worth the money ### 1/5 — Not Worth Buying *2015-04-28, version 1.0.2* This game is seriously overrated - there are walls of text with few choices in comparison, while the beginning was relatively okay, both the middle and end showed a sharp decline in quality. ### 1/5 — No *2015-01-14, version 1.0.2* Garbage. Choices mean nothing. You do what the writer wants or you are forced to start over. Do you know how ridiculous it is to have to start over such a linear story after spending hours reading every friggin word??? Nearly threw my flippin phone throw the window. Waste of time and money. As for the "author", I hope to god you never write again. ### 1/5 — Not worth your money, move on. *2014-08-15* This is a game that has some promise but lacks all subtlety. For the reading of 12 years old and up there's a number of words in here that are not anything a 12-year-old should be using. Also the adolescent jokes about bodies are just locker room lame. The author fixates away too much about women and how attractive they are objectifying them and it's really quite insulting to females who are playing this game. It also reads like someone ran it through Google translator at the last frantic minute. In my mind there's some Romanian kid in his moms basement who hasn't been able to lose his virginity yet who sweating through this app, is hoping he can buy a car to impress the girl down the street if he can just sell enough of these. Don't help the lad. By the time you're finished with this excruciating game you're probably wishing that you could just have Chinese water torture instead and get it over with. Quotations pretty much disappear into the text and see you're wondering who's talking to who what's talking to want and exactly who is saying who to where. The verb to bear this misuse at least three times ( and yes I stopped and counted) and when you're busy editing the app because the author didn't you've lost the thread of the story and there's really no point in going on any further. 100 bug fixes later this might be playable until then save your money don't buy it. ### 2/5 — Meh *2017-12-08, version 1.0.3* I went into this novel really optimistic and by the end was completely let down. The ending might as well have been, "and you wake from your dream, glance around and nothing has changed", because that's sure as hell how it made me feel. Replay on this to me is abysmal, every playthrough generates the exact same ending, pointless. Characters? Spoiler alert, everyone that isn't holding a sword wants to have sex with you. In fact the player and your buddy are really the only ones with a detailed back story, kind of like everyone else just crawled out of the woods into a vacant town. It's not the worst COG game by any means, that title is reserved for that awful Mermaid game they have available, laughably, for purchase. ### 2/5 — Good story but ugh *2017-10-18, version 1.0.3* While the author is a good storyteller, oftentimes he veers forcibly into what is obviously his own unfortunate juvenile fantasies. I have a fairly high tolerance for that sort of thing, but what pushed me to write about it is that it is forced on you whether you yourself are interested or not. You have no ability to opt out of it and it just. keeps. going. Besides these moments the story is quite interesting, which is why this is a two and not a one. ### 2/5 — No real choice or control *2015-12-31, version 1.0.2* I started off enjoying the game as the writing on the whole is witty and engaging. However, descriptions and plot go on forever before you are allowed a chance to make a decision. Even then, the descisions you make aren't really honored. For example, if you decide to leave a party, a character will persuade you to stay. Make the "wrong" choice response to someone and a companion will say the right thing instead to bring the story back on track. After a while this gets really annoying to the point I just wanted to leave the game. The other big frustration are the behaviours and charcteristic stats. They don't make sense! You can be either 'Sly or Powerful'. So you can't gain power by being sly then? and 'Suave or Direct'? Suave isn't a behaviour - it's a state of being! The choice should have been 'Diplomatic or Direct', or even 'Sly or Direct'! I never understood how my decisions affected the author's idea of behaviours or characteristics, so making it even less enjoyable. Frequently I'll come across what looks like a program command in the text, like for instance [check versus Resourceful: pass/fail] and often its not as a result of a choice I've made, its just embedded in the storyline. Sorry, but all these issues, irritating by themselves, add up to really frustrating gameplay. In the end, I had to stop playing, even though I quite enjoyed the story. Author really needed to pay more attention to these details before releasing. ### 2/5 — It was good at first *2015-08-03, version 1.0.2* But it was to short and that ending was just so out of nowhere and ridiculous that it alone changed my score from a five to a two ### 2/5 — I thought this might be good *2014-09-19, version 1.0.2* I was wrong. I really wanted a good medieval fantasy game, but this isn't it. Every single woman i met had some sort of option to have your way with her. It was gross. Too much fixation on the sex appeal of women, for me anyways. I didn't even bother to finish it, because I just couldn't stand the terrible story. Do bother with this. ### 3/5 — A heartwarming yet flawed tale *2015-05-09, version 1.0.2* The story has an interesting premise and concept, but sloppy execution both from a gameplay and story side. The story itself, while intriguing, does not give any proper hints or foreshadowing to the shocker at the end, which is very shamilanesque. There are several bits of foreshadowing that are limited in scale and understanding, and while they can offer you a bit of information, they needed to be refined. The humor is what will ruin the emersion and ruin suspension of disbelief. The humor is rather juvenile throughout, which would be fine if it did not make modern references and use current slang so frequently. These jokes work to date the game and frustrate anyone attempting to become invested in the plot or characters. It simply ruins the illusion of a medieval world. This also refers to the narrator's tone. Perhaps if it was not so modernized it would have fit better, or perhaps it would have fit better in a modern fantasy. However, even in a modern tale, the humor would date the work. The characters are all right. I won't spoil too much, but you have three main romantic interests(though I honestly wish one of them had more time in the story), and an overall dynamic cast of characters. Some are more interesting than others, and overall they will be useful to your goals regardless. In addition, some aspects of the game - which initially appear creative - are not original in the slightest. The entire concept for the eradication of magic in the human population through the "War of the Magi" is ripped straight from Final Fantasy VI. I do not know if the writer knew of these similarities, but once again they serve to break realism and make the player who knows of these tales will be frustrated by this. Where this game shines is through emotion. There are moments, such as Aphid's moment of passing or the initial movement which forced the player away from home, which are masterful and emotional. These moments are the writer's strongest points, and I would recommend they focus on these in the future above humor. Moving on to gameplay, it is also decent. The stats and choices allow the player to customize their Mage how they wish, and it is generally easy to create a balanced character. However, the game only has this dynamic character for its initial stages, for after the first major turning point of the game, stats are checked to ensure the player has the skill to do tasks, but do not grow or change. The only exceptions are renown and corruption, though they are not the most important aspects of your character. I understand why this choice was made, but it forces the player to make certain choices and does not allow their character room to grow and change over the course of the novel, ruining their dynamic nature. Overall, it is an okay game. It has shinning moments and a decent gameplay system. If you can stand the juvenile and modern humor, I would recommend it for a free weekend. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Good read, fun game *2022-07-18, version 1.0.5* If you haven’t had it spoiled, the ending is very interesting. Definitely worth getting, the characters are all enjoyable and the interactions are believable enough. The fantasy setting is vague enough to not bog you down, but detailed enough to add to the story. ### 5/5 — Fantastic *2022-06-28* Really felt impressed and engaged throughout the story, especially at the ending. The negative reviews just seem very nitpicky, or are made by people who are unnerved by anything remotely sexual at all. If anything, I wish more Choice of Games focused on this stuff more. The romance is the highlight of most of these series, and I always find it disappointing when they just fade to black when anything gets serious, or they keep it shallow. I’m not a child, I dont need, and especially dont want these stories to be PG. With that said, this entry doesn't have anything all that involved, there’s certainly no sex scenes or anything of the sort. However the romance scenes that are present, are very charged. I don’t feel emotion from written stories very easily, but this writer gets through to me everytime. He manages to successfully capture the heated feelings involved in these moments, not just those of lust, but the emotional as well. Every story he writes, he manages to make at least one romance target character that I personally feel connected to. I’m not sure any multiple choice story really has achieved that for me quite as well, nor any other medium really. This especially applies to the character of Junko in his Samurai of Hyuga series which is still ongoing, that is his main work and is ongoing to this day. Compared to Samurai of Hyuga, this is a much shorter story, and is contained to one book. However, its dark, engaging, and well written. It also explores some realistic(albeit not gone into in depth) depictions of politics, religion, and stratified societies. ### 5/5 — Fun, light-hearted romp *2018-10-01, version 1.0.4* Good interface, reasonably clear choices, cute romances, and a... surprise at the end that I particularly liked. Only complaint is that, while the choices did make some difference to the narration, there was little room for divergence. The romances were the significant options. I'd have liked my element/weapon choice to make a bit more difference to my choices. I'm also not sure what difference Corruption made. Nonetheless, these issues are common to most Choices of Games, and this was cleverer than most (in a surprisingly meta way). The story is great and if you’re not into what the author is selling, then try another!
