## What is FerryOrNot?

Heading across Puget Sound? FerryOrNot answers the question every ferry rider
actually has: take the boat, or drive around?

It compares both, door to door, using live Washington State Ferries data and real
traffic — then tells you which one gets you there sooner, and how much to trust the
answer.

WHAT IT DOES

Compares ferry against driving around, ranked by arrival time, between any two
places you give it.

Names the boat. The verdict reads "Take the 4:35 ferry" — not a vague nudge toward
the terminal.

Says when it doesn't know. Every recommendation carries a confidence read, and when
the two options are genuinely too close to call, it says so instead of picking.

Predicts delays instead of repeating them. Sailings on nine crossings carry a
forecast built from months of vessel telemetry, so a boat running late is often
flagged before the schedule admits it.

Tells you when to leave. A leave-by time for the sailing you chose, worked back
through live traffic and a dock cushion measured from real toll-booth data.

ONCE YOU'VE PICKED A BOAT

Commit to a sailing and the app stays with you:

- A journey card that follows you through the app and keeps the countdown honest
- Lock Screen updates while you drive, with your ferry pass ready to scan at the
  toll booth
- A warning if your sailing is cancelled, delayed, or stops being catchable — and an
  all-clear when it recovers
- A reminder as you reach the terminal, with the right pass already open

THE REST

- Live vessel map, with a slider back through the day
- Terminal cameras, so you can see the holding lanes yourself
- WSF service alerts and bulletins
- Drive-up space estimates, and how full this sailing usually is by now
- Tides, wind and water temperature at the crossing
- Live WSF fares for your direction
- Link a Wave2Go pass by camera and check remaining rides

ROUTES

Ten crossings: Seattle–Bainbridge, Seattle–Bremerton, Edmonds–Kingston,
Mukilteo–Clinton, Fauntleroy–Vashon, Fauntleroy–Southworth, Southworth–Vashon,
Point Defiance–Tahlequah, Port Townsend–Coupeville, and Anacortes–San Juan Islands.

Delay predictions cover the nine crossings where we have enough history.
Anacortes–San Juans runs on the published schedule, and the app says so rather than
guessing.

PRIVACY

Your location stays on your phone. Routing runs on-device through Apple Maps, and
our servers only ever send data down — they never receive your location, your trips,
or your passes.

SUBSCRIPTION

FerryOrNot is a subscription: $1.49/month or $14.99/year, with a 7-day free trial.
It covers everything above. No ads, no accounts, no tracking.

Ferry schedules, vessel status, and drive-up space are provided by WSDOT /
Washington State Ferries. Traffic and routing from Apple Maps. Tides and marine
conditions from NOAA. Space counts are live estimates, not reservations or
guarantees. FerryOrNot is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed
by Washington State Ferries or WSDOT.

FerryOrNot gives estimates, not guarantees. Schedules, delays, space counts, fares, and leave-by times come from third-party data that can be wrong or late, and conditions change. Always check WSDOT/WSF directly and allow a margin. Chowen Labs is not responsible for missed sailings, schedule changes, or fare differences.

### 5/5 — Great idea

*2026-10-02*

This app is a great idea! I’m constantly trying to check ferry times, status/cancellations of boats, and traffic delays to see if I should drive around or wait for the next ferry. This app saves me a ton of time and the data is displayed in a way that is easy to understand.

**Developer response:** Thanks so much! Glad it's saving you time on those wait-or-drive-around decisions. We'd love your ideas for what to add or improve next. Just tap the feedback link in the app (Settings → About & Support)

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-10-09

Fixes for late-running days:

• When a boat is running late and still on its way to your dock, FerryOrNot no longer skips it for a later sailing. It now plans on the earliest that boat can really leave.
• A sailing right behind a late boat is no longer ruled out while the boat ahead is still loading.
• Departure times never show earlier than the boat can actually leave.
• Clearer traffic wording for your drive, and small fixes to the dock-time setting.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-08

See your whole trip on a map, with live traffic on every drive.

• Route map: tap the map button to see every way there side by side. Tap a ferry route to zoom in on its four legs: the drive to the dock, the wait, the crossing and the drive after.
• Traffic along the way: every drive bar is coloured by traffic along the route, with a line saying where it's slow.
• On board: once you're on the boat, the card shows when you'll dock and arrive, the water and the tide, and the traffic on the drive ahead.
• Share ETA: send your arrival time from your journey in one tap.
• Late boats, clearly: a delayed sailing is named by its timetable time, with when it's expected to leave. You're also told when a sailing is likely to sell out.
• Your pass on more routes: a multi-ride pass now covers any route with the same or lower fare, and shows what you'd add at the booth on a pricier one.
• Dock cushion, your way: four clear settings from Conservative to Risky. On days when Edmonds–Kingston is down to one boat, plans leave extra room.
• Bigger text: FerryOrNot now reads well at every text size.
• New to FerryOrNot? A short tour shows the live answer for your own trip before you subscribe.
• Fixes: fewer false "Leave earlier" alerts, and leave reminders no longer go missing.

FerryOrNot is not affiliated with or endorsed by Washington State Ferries or WSDOT.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-10-04

Fixes for late-running days:

• When a boat is running well behind, FerryOrNot now shows the expected delay on sailings further ahead, instead of the timetable time.
• The trip card no longer mistakes a boat arriving for an earlier sailing as yours. It now says which run that boat is doing first.
• Warnings about making your sailing now clear from the Lock Screen once your trip is over, or once they stop being true.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-30

FerryOrNot on your wrist, and a journey that keeps going after the boat leaves.

• Apple Watch app — your journey, upcoming sailings and your ferry pass on your wrist. The pass is ready at the booth, and "Hey Siri" answers on the watch too.
• After you sail — FerryOrNot works out whether you made your boat. On board, the Lock Screen counts down to docking and offers directions from the far side. Missed it? You get the next boat that still works, from where you are.
• Missed-boat warnings — if you can't reach your sailing in time, the journey card says so and shows the next one you can make.
• Clearer delays — late sailings show the scheduled time struck through beside the forecast, on the phone and the watch.
• Vashon triangle — better timing for Fauntleroy, Vashon and Southworth, including sailings that call at Vashon on the way.
• Fewer false alarms — once you're in line, a sailing filling up is no longer a warning.
• Send feedback — Settings › About & support. Anonymous; we read every message.
• Plus fixes throughout.
