It's definitely a gadget but as a geek I love it. It's accurate and easy to use, the sine-wave generator can replicate tones exactly as sampled fooling many people into thinking they're hearing the original. It works notably better on the new 3GS as the sampling rate is higher, it will happily sample and generate tones from a few 10s of Hz to 20KHz in real-time. FFTs are a very "simple" way to divide up sound samples and produce histograms of the frequencies, it's amazing how well this can be done in such a small device. The algorithm is relatively simple and there are many open source implementations but this one is nicely packaged and perfectly designed for the iPhone. I've bought many apps in the past that have been erased after a few days, I've had this now since the 3GS came out and I still use it regularly both as a toy and, well, er, well, as a toy. :-) -John- ### 5/5 — Brilliant *2009-11-30, version 0* This app has replaced a Laptop, interface and mic for me. The accuracy of the metering, the ability to generate test tones, save the results and compare differences is just brilliant. I am a professional sound engineer and this app is good enough for fine tuning PA systems and studio monitors.... and it is on my PHONE!!!! I've also used this successfully for signal to noise plots and frequency response testing of mic preamps too. I have an Audio Precision Portable One Plus analyser (worth about $10,000 when new) and, crazy as this may sound, FFT is actually more useful in certain situations!! If you are a professional, you'll quickly discover this app is worth every cent! ### 5/5 — AERCO mic preamps *2009-07-24* EXCELLENT! Very nice to have 16 K points, good user interface. Be nice to clear display from front panel- say double-tap? ### 5/5 — Useful Toy *2009-07-17* First of all, if you use sound systems, buy this app. Even if you own top shelf gear like I do (2 TEF analyzers, SMARRT, B&K mics with calibrators etc) you will use this A LOT because it is in your pocket. I bought most of the Studio Six apps, and except for RT60 they are pretty handy. They do NOT take the place of real gear for a bunch or reasons like non pro connectors, poor dynamic range, lack of frequency extension, characteristics of the built-in iPhone mic etc., and the only archiving is saving a pic of the screen, and when you do that it doesn't show what settings you have selected for that measurement. I am hoping that the long promised external mic helps fix a couple of these items. Enough of the negatives...I use this app several times every day. If I had to give it back I would be bummed. Definitely worth it. *2009-07-11* Apps like this make an iphone worth owning. I am a pro sound engineer, I work a lot of different rooms. Believe the hype, this app is VERY accurate. The only place it needs improvement is in the sub frequencies (below about 150), but this is a limitation of the iphone internal mic-can't wait for the stereo mic these guys are making to release. BUY IT! Very responsive, with plenty of options and settings. Signal generator nice feature. Worth more than $20. I debated about RTA vs FFT. Glad I went with FFT. With all the knobs, I get the info I need. All are fantastic!! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Musical pitches are not correct *2014-11-27, version 4.8.1* This appears as if it could be a good app. Severe let down, is that it incorrectly labels the musical notes. Using the apps own signal generator to create a 440hz sine wave, which is generally used for middle A, the app labels it as a G# . It seems to be a semi tone out for all of its pitches. I hope this is can be remedied ASAP with an update. Will change my review when it does. ### 2/5 — andrewr *2024-04-23* Great app but it’s crashing with my update to iOS 17.4.1 ### 2/5 — Not exactly a real discrete FFT *2020-12-11* The spectrum is displayed as a continuous graph rather than being discrete vertical lines for each frequency present. Makes it very hard to use for real quantitative analysis. Why could they not have done it the correct way?? ### 2/5 — Good App Gone Bad *2014-08-17* Update Crashes every time. Deleted and re-installed. Same thing. Developer must not care about reviews. I hate to say anything bad about this app, because I use it all the time, but the new patch I just installed is buggy. It's crashed 3 times in about a minute. Every time you double tap the screen it crashes. I made a change in the options and it crashed. Trying to find a slow leak in a tire or a vacuum leak on an engine. By showing the peaks in Hz you can visually "see" the sound in a way impossible to hear with your ears. Thanks for the 4" support! ### 5/5 — Add Colours Choice? *2012-08-31, version 3.0* First off, you get 5 stars simply because I like gadgets and this looks to be a good one. :) However, I haven't used the app in anger so the rating is somewhat spurious. The real purpose of this review is to add a request. I'm colour blind. I have the commonest kind too, namely red-receptor deficiency. A couple of my friends are exactly the same. Essentially brown = red, pink = grey, and worst of all here, green = yellow. (Other people's XL plots, for example, are almost impossible to discern when they combine the graphic representation of a few functions in one single diagram — those shades can be so hard to track and pin down from the legend, especially when they're pastel. Only the nice, simple, bright, kiddy kind of colours work fine for us Darwin's losers.) So, is there any chance you might add a facility to change the standard colours of the function lines displayed? Pretty please? As I mentioned, the green and yellow lines are the worst — I have to resort to the use of logic to tell them apart. It's tricky but I'm afraid I might actually make a mistake one day. Oh wait, I just did — fixing an electrical socket. That's why I'm typing this from a hospital bed. :) P.S. Blue is nice.
