## What is Field Instinct?

Field Instinct writes the record into the photograph.

Take a photo and it burns the date, the weather, the area you are working in, and your own note into the corner — in Helvetica, at full resolution, permanently. No database to lose, no app that has to still exist in ten years, no caption stranded in a notes app. The photo is the document.

Built for people who document conditions for a living: site inspections, environmental monitoring, surveys, field research.

• Date and time with the UTC offset, so a record made across time zones still reads correctly years later
• Weather and temperature from Apple Weather, captured at the moment you shoot
• Area — outfall, cell, transect, whatever you call it — carried across every photo in an outing and added to the file name
• Your note, as long as you need it; the type resizes to fit

The stamp never covers more than a third of the width or a quarter of the height, and the viewfinder shows you exactly where it will land before you take the shot.

Made for working outdoors. The volume buttons are the shutter, so it works one-handed, with gloves, with a wet screen, and with the phone braced against something. The screen goes to full brightness while the camera is open. Shooting never waits for the weather — the shutter writes to disk and returns, and the conditions catch up behind it.

Files are named 2026-09-20_09-14-05_Outfall-3.jpg, so a folder sorts itself chronologically the moment you copy it to a computer.

Photos already in your library can be stamped too. They keep their own capture date and location, and are honestly left without weather rather than given today's.

Your location is used once, at the moment you shoot, to look up the weather. It is never stored and never attached to the photo.

Weather data provided by Apple Weather.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4 — 2026-10-24

• Tags. Add as many as you like to a photo — pick one you've used or type a new one. Tags set on the home screen go on every photo you take until you remove them.
• Filter the notebook by tags, matching all of them or any, or group it by tag.
• Share photos as folders built from their tags — pick power, then nj, and they arrive sorted for your drive or cloud storage.
• Every note and area you've used is kept until you clear it, and typing finds old ones.
• Notes written before a shot now show up in recents.
• Holding a photo to start selecting no longer jumps the screen to the newest dates.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-10-20

• Fixes a crash when tapping a full-screen photo to hide and show its buttons.
• The shutter sits clear of the note's pencil on iPhones with a Home button.

### 1.3 — 2026-10-13

• Swipe left and right between photos, on the edit screen and full screen. Swiping follows the Notebook's order and search.
• Deleting a photo moves on to the next one.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-11

• Categories: up to four labelled lines on the stamp, such as Area, Discipline or Station. Each photo keeps its own.
• The area field remembers recent values. Tap one to reuse it, hold it to remove it, and clear the field with the X.
• Select several Notebook photos at once, or a whole area, and share or save them together.
• See how big your selection is and whether it fits in one email. Turn on Smaller copies to send lighter files.
• Save to Photos keeps the photo's file name.
• Search the Notebook by words in the note, an area or other category, or a date such as "Oct 9".
• The Notebook groups photos by day under By date. Tap the chosen order again to reverse it: oldest first, or Z to A.

### 1.1 — 2026-10-05

• Every photo goes straight into the Notebook, already stamped. Tap one to change its note or area.
• Two new stamp looks, Board and No panel, each in small, medium or large. Your choice is remembered.
• Write the note before you shoot: tap the note line on the viewfinder's stamp.
• A zoom bar on the side of the viewfinder, with stops at each lens.
• Mark up any photo with a pen or text boxes, and change the markup later.
• Open any photo full screen, zoom in, and share it from there.
• Sort the Notebook by area.
• Clear a note in one tap.
• Photos saved with 1.0 stay in the Files app.
