## What is Fieldnoter?

Fieldnoter turns your conversations into clear, organized text, fully on your iPhone.

Record live or import an audio or video file. Fieldnoter transcribes it on your device, labels who said what, and gives you a short summary with the key points and action items. Your audio and transcripts stay on your iPhone. There is no cloud and no account.

What you need
Fieldnoter works best on iPhone 12 and newer. Summaries via Apple Intelligence need iPhone 15 Pro or newer; on other models you download a summary model once. On older iPhones with limited memory (XR, SE 2nd generation) the on-device models are too heavy.

### 1.7.5 — 2026-08-20

Honesty for iPhones with less working memory, such as the iPhone 12 and 13: summarizing and the Ask feature turned out not to run reliably there, so they are no longer offered on those devices. Recording, transcribing and speaker recognition work fully. The app now simply says so, in the intro and in Settings.

Error messages when summarizing now show the full, readable explanation instead of a truncated technical code.

### 1.7.4 — 2026-08-17

This update fixes a freeze when summarizing on iPhones with less working memory, such as the iPhone 12 and 13. Summarizing now uses a leaner setting on those devices. Long recordings take a little longer, but it no longer gets stuck. The Ask feature was tuned to the same setting.

### 1.7.3 — 2026-08-16

Model downloads got a fix. A download on an ordinary connection was sometimes cut off with an error even though it was healthy; that's resolved. The home screen now shows when a download is running, megabytes included, and the connection message tells you the real reason from now on.

Fieldnoter now takes into account what your iPhone can handle. Models that are too heavy for your device are no longer offered, and on iPhones with less working memory the app is honest about what to expect.

The summary models have clearer names: Apple Intelligence, Universal and In-depth. You can also see per model whether it's already on your phone.

### 1.7.2 — 2026-08-15

This update is for iPhones with less working memory, such as the iPhone 12 and 13.

Transcription now runs in a lighter mode on those devices. The model could previously be too large for memory, and the app would quit while loading it.

If a transcription is interrupted anyway, the app now asks whether you want to try again. It no longer keeps retrying on its own.

The progress bar while downloading a model now shows real progress. And a half fetched model no longer counts as ready.

### 1.7.1 — 2026-08-12

Search now looks inside the text of your recordings. One word is enough to find something back.

Ask replies in your own language and reads the whole transcript instead of a part of it.

The waveform while recording shows what the microphone actually hears.

Models can now be fetched from Settings, under Manage storage, with a stop button and a message when a download stalls.

New: short notes on the buttons you can't guess. Once, and gone with a single tap.

We also fixed a few failures that used to happen quietly. A full disk during recording went unreported, and the purchase screen did not always appear when you asked for it.
