### 4/5 — Great game

*2015-04-20*

It's a great and fun game love it I got it because I watched the yogscasts do the book and this app is great I got no bugs like other people

### 4/5 — Classic

*2015-01-22*

Good quality fun but too short and not enough content or direction options. Good to see this type of game available though. Well done Tinman - now try to match what Inkle have achieved with Sorcery...

### 4/5 — Brilliant Adaptation of the 80's Classic!

*2014-06-02*

If you were a fan of Fighting Fantasy books back in the day and you fancy a bit of nostalgia, my advice is simple: buy this! If you aren't familiar with the books, or still aren't convinced, read on hardy adventurer...

This is the Forest of Doom game that you know and love but with bells and whistles! The gameplay is enhanced by the fact that you don't need to keep any of the notes and the game system calculates all of the damage for you. The dice rolling engine is nicely realised, simple but effective. The adventure sheet also keeps notes of all the items you have and use so all the scribbling is a thing of the past! The classic art is all there and you can choose to view it in b&w or the new colour versions which are nicely done. Oh, and did I mention there is a map?! This is great for helping you keep your bearings and trying to play the mission in different ways. A fantastic addition!

On top of the actual game which was a joy to relive are the addition of achievements, an interesting "making of" article by Ian Livingstone (caution: complete the game first as this contains spoilers) and a "history of Fighting Fantasy" which was informative also.

My one complaint is a problem that exists with the original book: there are certain places and things that you have to do to complete the mission which means there is virtually only one way to complete the quest successfully! However, this does encourage repeat plays and along with the achievements you'll want to fully explore the Forest of Doom!

Fantastic buy, beautifully enhanced and realised on the iPad by Tin Man Games. Highly recommended! I can't wait to try more of these books!

### 5/5 — Faithful recreation on iPhone

*2014-05-25*

I had all these books as a kid in the early 80s. The engine is fantastic and really slick. The new color images are superb and the developer has put a lot if effort into creating a seamless recreation and experience for the gamer. Only request is a way to easily restart. I couldn't find that.

### 5/5 — Great adaptation of the classic books!

*2014-04-02*

Loved these games as a kid, and this app really brought back the nostalgia! Easy controls and quick to get into... Really fun game!

### 4/5 — Nice adaption

*2013-10-21*

Great adaption of a classic game, the iPhone interface works brilliantly with the gameplay. It's less hassle to play than the original pen and paper versions. Nicely done.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2013-10-19*

Highly recommend this adventure into the Fighting Fantasy world.

### 5/5 — Back to my childhood!

A great purchase for just 3 quid. I remember playing this years ago and it's bought back fun memories.

The control system is slick and fighting the battles is surprisingly fun with the virtual dice.

Definitely recommend this!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Don't buy until bugs fixed

*2015-04-17*

Ok so I've been playing the Fighting Fantasy gamebook apps forever now. This is the only one that bugs out and doesn't even let me get past the main menu. Judging by other reviews I'm not alone and this is unacceptable to even sell in this state. I deleted and reinstalled and it does the same thing after the first time you use the app.

### 1/5 — Can't get past initial load

*2014-11-30*

Something is wrong with this release. When you tap the screen to get past the intro it tries to load additional content, like the other Tin Man FF titles, then crashes. The other FF games don't have this problem. Please fix.

### 1/5 — Still crashing before loading.

*2014-11-12*

Like the others mentioned, it crashes during the early loading scenes. One tome I didn't touch the screen at all and it loaded up. I created a character, fought and won just one battle and then it crashed in the middle of the second fight. Running on an iPad 2. Odd this would crash because it runs way more graphically intensive games just fine ( angry birds go, baldurs gate, trials Frontier, ect...

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2014-04-15*

Crashes before starting EVERY time!

### 1/5 — Buggy

*2013-07-08*

Crashes frequently on my iPad. Expected more than this for 6 dollars. Planning on ordering the real book tomorrow.

### 2/5 — Fun but way too short for the price

*2019-02-04*

Good game. Way too short with no replay value once completed. Definitely not worth the price.

### 2/5 — Fun but buggy

*2015-01-23*

It's fun but I can only play once delete it then redownload the game to be able to play again other wise I get stuck with the game over screen

### 3/5 — Good, once you can play it

*2014-11-23*

When you start the game for the first time, you start the intro movie. If you try to interrupt it the app crashes. Once the movie has completed, everything works correctly

### 3/5 — Fun, but definitely short for the price

*2014-02-08*

I loved the Fighting Fantasy books as a kid, and I love that someone is cranking out these apps, but $5.99 does seem a bit steep for this game, considering how short a time it takes to play.

### 4/5 — Ne fonctionne pas sur iPhone 6S

*2015-11-29*

Quel dommage !

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Top

*2020-05-03*

Excellent !

### 5/5 — Wow

*2018-01-05*

Amazing follows the book perfectly and does all of the math for you. Well done

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2015-11-02*

I still have my first edition 1980's book print of this and this version is exactly how to modernise a classic from game book to digital format. Oh not to mention anyone reading this review if you think this app is amazing wait till you see 'Warlock of firetop mountain' I hope they can update citadel of chaos and city of thieves!

### 5/5 — Fun and enchanting

*2015-04-02*

The Forest of Doom is really fun to play: a beautifully presented app based on a classic fighting fantasy game book with a very user friendly interface. For that reason, if game book apps appeal to you at all this is worth playing.

It is true that the premise and plot are pretty mundane - you are tasked with finding two pieces of a broken hammer somewhere in a surprisingly well populated but supposedly terrifying forest full of disjointed brief encounters - and the writing is fairly functional. However, the sheer number and variety of the encounters is large and the sense of walking through a world populated by fairytale beings is so enchanting that these problems stop mattering.

I will admit to a nostalgia tinted view; I remember this being the first (and probably only) Fighting Fantasy story I completed on my first attempt. It is one of the simpler entries in the series to complete and Tin Man's auto mapping feature makes it easier to find all the important locations and explore everywhere if you want. While several of their other gamebook apps require a lot more time, thought and trial and error to complete it is nice to have an easy one here and you will complete this quite quickly. Nevertheless, it's still enjoyable to come back after completing it to see what else you can discover.

Overall, I think The Forest of Doom works better as an app than as a book: it is perfect for a casual undemanding play on a commute or short journey and it is to Tin Man's credit that they have done such a good job converting it. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — Very good

*2015-01-23*

Excellent app. It makes me remember from my old books. Very anxious for the Deathtrap Dungeon.

### 5/5 — Great

*2015-01-06*

Excellent History. Ian Livingstone is definitely an awesome story-teller.

### 5/5 — My favourite

*2014-10-13*

This was my favourite Fighting Fantasy book. Until I downloaded this app I had all but forgotten how to navigate the paths and perils of Darkwood forest, but I have enjoyed reliving them again.

### 5/5 — Forest of Doom

*2014-07-08*

Excellent transfer from book to Tablet excellent :)

### 5/5 — Great game, nice app

*2014-06-06*

"so kids anyone fancy playing a thirty year old adventure book as an iPad app?"

And the answer, well no of course, at least to begin with but it wasn't long before we were all playing along. Flashes of my childhood came flooding back as I shared the adventure with my own children. At times I could even remember what was going to happen next!

The story itself was the first Fighting Fantasy book to come out of the limits of a cave structure or citadel lending it a genuine sense of scale. It moves at a fair pace and there are many encounters to be had along the way.

Although the game contains a map, which is in itself a great addition, you will find that you will have to make your own to piece the whole adventure together.

The app itself works brilliantly with well designed features and the recoloured artwork was a nice touch.

More, more , more please.
