### 2/5 — Nun ja

*2026-02-26*

Schlecht gealtert.

Courage!

### 3/5 — It’s ok

*2024-01-27, version 2.0.1*

It’s good but the original was better when it came to the battle scenes the villains look rushed and pixelated compared to the original. also i remember how cool it looked when you would hit a target with magic and spells compared to this. Since its a strategy game the flow and look of the battle scenes are important and i dont get that with this version. But its still a good game

### 3/5 — FF4 Fan happy and sad

*2024-01-10, version 2.0.1*

This is one of the most iconic RPG’s of SNES. I’ve been a fan for a long time of this franchise. Let’s start with the positives. 1st, I enjoy the new look of the game. The characters, cut scenes, world graphics, and how the weapons change as you get different ones…. All very cool additions to the game. Even the augment stuff and trophy hunting didn’t bother me, I found it fun to add this to the beloved game itself…. Follows the story exactly, no weird changes or anything, and all of that is 5 star work!!!

Now, the negative that’s a total vibe killer…. The MUSIC!!! Ugh… I don’t know if the new composer is like totally tone deaf or just decided that he wanted to “improve’ one of the greatest soundtracks of all time, but the problem is like nails on a chalkboard…. This person completely changed many of the bass lines and it totally vibe kills the game for me…. The ever popular battle music for normal battles, like dude you can’t mess with that! And what about the drum programming in that battle music? It’s like you programmed a drummer making a mistake on the hits, there ain’t even no kick drum with the cymbal hits!!! Ugh, and Mount Ordeals???? The bass line totally changed the song and there’s no magic there anymore. Just absolutely BRUTAL!! This is just a couple examples out of many.

One of the best experiences of playing ANY final fantasy game is the music, especially Nobuo Uematsu’s work. His music sets the vibe for the game. So, to actually have the audacity to change it yourself or incompetence to take on this challenge and fail that horribly, it’s truly an outrage. I can barely keep playing the game hearing this brutal destruction of so many of the wonderful tracks this game had. It drives me crazy…. I could’ve done such a better job…. Anyway, that’s why the 3 stars. Overall great remake, and it’s a shame that the music didn’t keep up with the game.

### 4/5 — Please fix

*2023-08-26, version 2.0.1*

I love the 3D version of this game and I would love it even more if the game music wasn’t shutting off randomly to where I have to reset my phone

### 3/5 — Love this game, controls are useless, no controller support

*2023-04-07, version 2.0.1*

This was my favorite game from childhood and I absolutely love watching the cutscenes bring to life moments of a story that I treasure.

The controls; especially in battle; are as counterintuitive as anything I’ve ever tried to use. I thought I could counter that with a controller, but this game does not support it. Any battle that I can’t auto-battle through (though I do love being able to set auto-battle commands) usually just leads to me quitting the game for a while.

The quality of life improvements are mostly a nice addition, but taking away the ability for characters to equip a variety of weapons is unwelcome.

Overall, this is a nice nostalgia hit, but ultimately not very viable as a game.

### 3/5 — Need to offer older music

*2023-02-16, version 2.0.1*

The 3D aspect really isn’t an upgrade over the original sprites. And this applies moreso to the music. Not one musical track was improved over the original. You really need to offer the original music as an option because the new versions just sound odd.

### 3/5 — Great Remake, needs RNG updates

*2022-10-26, version 2.0.1*

Great remakes of a classic, I have only ever played the original SNES version. A few gripes I have about the gameplay however: 1. Allow the player to rearrange items, 2. Allow for stashing items with the fat chocobo again so you can have 99 on hand on more in stash, 3. ‘Examine’ items, some items do not offer complete descriptions of their immunities, augment descriptions aren’t great I feel like I’m taking a gamble when assigning, and 4. Improve the RNG. I have fought more than 1000 battles against thunder dragons without receiving a blue tail. I get grinding.....but this is ridiculous. In contrast I received a red tail after 16 battles. I’m a completionist and this RNG is ruining my marriage :P this game does not have enough story/content and is not interactive enough to justify 300 hours for 100% completion.

### 4/5 — Overall satisfied

*2022-06-22, version 2.0.1*

Great game, not the best port. Resolution should be improved for better pixel density like on the phone. Also experienced some crashing later in the game.

### 3/5 — Definitive Version Despite Flaws; Do not equip Defender on Kain

*2022-04-12, version 2.0.1*

I enjoy the lower difficulty than the DS as well as mapmaking (items if traveled 100%) and cinematography within the story, which voice acting and improved graphics make moments, like the moon showing through the window in Cecil’s bedroom or the opening that was added (though brainwashing is overused). The battle system also allows you to choose what attack to repeat and you have augments to experiment with multiple commands, including hotkey magic and fun window designs. All of which are not in the pixel remaster, as well as the depth of Dark Knight Cecil’s mask that he fully wears in battle, and partially has in cutscenes or shows his eyes if he wants. He also has a soliloquy while opening the menu. The main issues I had are that you backtrack a lot with a useless teleport (towers, sealed cave and tunnels are not dungeons) quicksave is kinda dated, forcing you to save and the default combat speed is slow at 4, so you’d have to set it to 1 after the first battle. Edward’s harp sometimes clips through his cape like when Tellah attacks him, but I’ll take that with the best versions of his bard songs to quickly regen and later haste the party (he’s not as good in the after years/pixel remaster). Also, Cid working on airships has the worst animation I’ve seen in a game as sometimes he’s not even holding the hammer properly. Fortunately, Golbez’s motivational backstory, normal difficulty being challenging but fair, and developer’s office extras not in the pixel remaster, make this the definitive version despite the fact they messed up and I lost my defender Kain had equipped despite him returning to the party in the endgame. It was better than his Gungnir, so just robbing me makes no sense.

### 2/5 — The game is awesome but sound cut off halfway through

*2022-03-08, version 2.0.1*

The sound cut off halfway through the game. Immediately when it gets to the title screen it just stops playing music. There’s effect sounds but no music….what’s going on?! Super sad :(

### 4/5 — One of my all time favorites - needs Apple TV version

*2022-02-24, version 2.0.1*

Now that the Pixel Remaster is here, this is unlikely, but it would be really great to have these available on Apple TV with controller support. I really like both versions (this one and PR), but playing on my tiny little iPhone is not nearly as nice as a TV.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Unplayable on Mobile

*2026-07-26, version 2.0.4*

This makes me unbelievably sad because I played this on SNES when it came to the US, but since the WAIT function is basically removed, the mobs are hitting you while you’re just trying to enter commands, which is a clunky business at best. So disappointed.

### 1/5 — Completely ripped off

*2026-06-03, version 2.0.4*

I bought this in a package of FF 1-FF 6 years ago. Around 2021/2022. I had them installed on my phone the entire time since then but now I only have access to FF 3, 4, & After Years. It’s extremely disappointing & frustrating even after trying to reach out for support. They’ve been less than helpful & I either want all of my games back or a full refund for them.

### 1/5 — Looks Awful!

*2025-03-29, version 2.0.4*

A horrible looking take on what FF4 used to be. A glitchy, awful mess.

### 1/5 — Not at all what you remembered and not what you want.

*2025-03-14, version 2.0.4*

This WILL leave disappointed over time.

### 1/5 — NEW “HARASSMENT” POLICY

*2025-01-12*

To those who may be as yet unaware, Square just put out a new policy taking a stand against harassment. They now reserve the right to refuse services or deny your right to purchase their products for engaging in behaviors that may exceed socially acceptable norms… but they have listed asking for “changes” to a game as an example.

I’m not kidding. Requesting a change be made may just be enough to get you SUED. That is also not an exaggeration! Square has specifically said they will pursue legal action, and their policy is vague enough that mere CRITICISM may be enough to land you in court if they don’t like what you have to say!

UNACCEPTABLE TO THE NTH DEGREE.

### 1/5 — Bug makes it impossible.

*2023-12-17, version 2.0.1*

I played this game back in the day and with this port, the boss Goblez is basically unbeatable with the way it is set up. Everything you hit him with basically just heals him….sad that i got this far in the game and now i face a bug that makes what used to be a relatively easy boss into the ultimate badass…lol

### 1/5 — Would give five stars if …

*2022-12-13, version 2.0.1*

Love the games originally, still do but the timer on a touchpad does not work well with me at all. Put an option for a turn based setting I would be a fan again.. worse part is that time is important and when pressing a button does scrolling instead it’s impossible to get a pattern down like with a game pad. Have the timer with no option to turn it off is one the reasons I stopped following the franchise back in the day actually. I liked taking my time figuring it, and die very little as my personal play style. Like slow chess. You all made it where that’s not possible . Only speed chess then to add challenges to don’t add options, you take them away. If they just had the option 🤷🏽‍♂️. The rest is cool, and having timer for second run would be bonus way to play a second time too, oh well.

I was gonna work my way through series but the timer is to annoying for me . Reminded me why I stopped playing 😝

Oh grey tail turned in twice and did nit receive “reach ring” even though it said I did. Did not appear in inventory. Also, battle graphics manipulate battle timer and not in a good way =-/

But I would still do five stars if they just had the option to go “turn based” in settings. That menu wait thing does not achieve the same thing. Can still have speed play factor for characters performance on turn based. Taking away options to make it more difficult is not creating for challenges it feels manipulative. That pre load commands is cool but then in after years the took it away 😝 more taking away for challenges and that was lazy coding for sure. It’s the exact same game just reorganized and for challenge make it harder to choose actions 🙄. They put asteroids hitting earth to block the entrances to parts of the game not used from old template. Could not even bother to put a tail in them. After years the game they rushed out for money, not content. You can see in tower of Babil I think unused floor from old game, blocked by mysterious powers. Lol even most old random town treasures in after years same from 4 😜

Off to look for a game like dragon quest/warrior. Or play them all again 😁 they got after game content that’s pretty cool 😎

If you all add turn base options to games let me know, I’ll work my way up to current 😁

### 1/5 — Leider fehlerhaft

*2022-03-27*

### 1/5 — Audio

*2022-03-12, version 2.0.1*

I’m sure the game is fine and has all it’s old school charm however, the audio refuses to work. Not matter how much I uninstall/reinstall

### 1/5 — Very unhappy

*2022-02-04, version 2.0.1*

After purchasing the bulk of the Final fantasy games I tried to download my purchased copies only to find them missing. Now they want you to re-purchase them. What a rip off. You should have released new ones without messing with the old versions. Done with you guys

### 5/5 — As good as it was 31 years ago

*2024-02-21, version 2.0.1*

Played the original back in the 90s. This one was a fun blast from the past. Finished it in under a month. No problems just a fun play through. Would recommend it to anyone who remembers this game for back in the day. Hope you enjoy it!

### 5/5 — Second only to FFX

### 5/5 — Delighted

### 5/5 — Lovely!

*2022-03-06, version 2.0.1*

It’s better than I remembered from snes days. Runs excellent on iphone 12 pro. Definitely like the voice acting.

### 5/5 — The best final fantasy game

*2021-12-25, version 2.0.1*

If you're starting out on the final fantasy experience then i highly recommend this one. Personally this is THE best final fantasy game; it has all the traditional ff tropes and cliches (chocobos, spell names, moogles, summons), the cheesy dialogue that everyone hates and loves, and a huge collection of characters that are each and everyone of them relatable and all go on their own journey of self discovery, as well as a crackingly good story that paces along perfectly.
I think this is the LOTR of the final fantasy franchise.... it just has it all... the hero’s journey... dark tonal story beats that are nicely wrapped up in a anime style and presentation that really tones down those darker elements of the story for younger players to digest..... and the game doesnt talk down to its audience either it just tells you a story of good vs evil with no politics involved just good opd fashioned morals....
The main character Cecil goes from becoming a dark character (A dark knight, I wonder if thats a batman reference) who questions who he is and his own motifs and intentions to later forgiving himself and finding redemption... even going through a rebirth of sorts to venturing to the underworld and literally fighting leviathan!!! to then flying to the heavens and finding his true identity and fighting another dragon of chaos (Jordan Peterson anyone!) and later finding out who his family and father was.... this game is laced with traditional story elements that are as old as civilisation itself.... it even has a few subtle star wars references thrown in too.... this literally is full of traditional themes of the heroes journey... from boyhood to manhood, saving the father (well uncle and brother) going to the underworld and defeating the dragon of chaos and discovering the self and taking responsibility.... all classic story motifs....
Don’t get me wrong either this isn’t only a boys game either, this does have strong female characters in the form of Rydia, one of the members most powerful characters (probably is the 2nd main character and a well loved one) who also goes on her own heroes journey.... which isnt forced into the story for inclusivity and to spread “THE MESSAGE” this was done for creative reasons and to kinda give a nice contrast to Cecils heroes journey because a hero can be anyone....
This is truly one of the best final fantasy games and THE most underrated from squares golden age.... whoever wrote this game really deserves another crack at the whip, because he knew how to write a damn good story, it just never ends when it seems like it should, but even then when it carries on it never feels like it drags on for too long.....
I play this game once a year, every year because it just hits that spot where modern day games really struggle... and thats telling a good story that’s relatable with likeable characters (yes even you edward) to story ideas that are thousands of years old that never fail, which are all thrown together and knitted perfectly... if any game deserves a remake its this one as it really is the jewel in the crown and the magnus opus of what final fantasy games today struggle to achieve.
So do yourself a favour a purchase this game you will not be disappointed.... and if you are then.... well you have zero taste and probably think marvel movies are deep thought provoking works of art.

### 5/5 — I prefer the spite style but this is the better version of from iv on iOS

*2021-12-04, version 2.0.1*

The only thing that would make this version better is allowing the player to select between the pixel perfect graphics or these 3D graphics.

I enjoy the music in this version and it has controller support using a device like the Razer Kishi.

The game plays great and looks crisp on my iPhone XS, 11 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max. I would expect that just about any iPhone in recent years should be able to handle this game.

### 5/5 — Great game!

*2021-04-12, version 2.0.0*

It was my first time playing FFiv, and I love it!
I did played the 3 first games before though.

The game’s smooth and work very well on my iPhone 11, but the D-pad is very bad on my iPad. I can’t run, otherwise it stuck.

The game’s still a 5 stars!
