### 3/5 — Update is awful

*2021-12-07, version 2.1.1*

The app used to be fairly user friendly, now it feels clunky, nonsensical and I can’t easily find some of the features I used to utilize. The “reimagining” needs to be reconsidered.

### 2/5 — Good idea, huge margin for mess ups

*2021-11-08, version 2.0.4*

This seemed like a great solution to keep in touch with our kids while the stretch their wings a little. It’s great in theory, but we keep running into snags. I feel like the relay is trying to do too much. There are all of three buttons to navigate a plethora of functions, most of them completely unnecessary (who needs a daily joke? I want to know my kids are safe, is all).
And don’t get me started on the new app. It was fine before, why mess it up? You butchered it. It’s a convoluted mess! I have a post graduate degree, but your app is thoroughly over my head. Please streamline!

### 2/5 — What happened?

*2021-10-19, version 2.0.1*

Just when I figure the app out they change it and screw it up again!

### 2/5 — Interesting idea poorly executed

*2021-03-13, version 1.28.60*

These are just about worthless because they are too difficult to use. If you’re not in the app tuned the the correct channel, you miss what your kid says and have to go in and navigate to the message. Even worse, if they are on the “everyone” channel, the message does not get saved, so you have to just ask them what they said.

We bought these to have walkie-talkie ease with cell phone range. You really get the worst of both, though, not the best. Would not recommend and will be switching back to Tick Talk when the TT4 comes out.

### 3/5 — Decent but hate the false advertising

*2021-01-14, version 1.27.68*

1. This is NOT a phone alternative! It does not make any calls. There is no real time voice chat.

2. There’s a message length limit that’s not mentioned anywhere in their documentation

3. Non intuitive software/device with not enough documentation. The physical device should come with at least a small pamphlet of what the buttons are. Aka give instructions to the kids.

4. No way to know if your message sent via app

5. After looking through the documentation I still can’t tell if you can send multiple messages to device without the other ones that device hasn’t hear being erased.

Anyways my son really likes it and didn’t want to return it. It works for us because he lives with his dad and step mom and because he has severe ADHD and this is screenless.

Though my son does complain than my messages have a tapping noise when he listens to them

### 3/5 — New to Relay

*2020-07-07, version 1.24.96*

I'm pretty text savvy and usually figure things out pretty quickly without having to read instructions. I don't like reading instructions I like apps and devices that are intuitive. I have not figured out how to delete messages and a couple of other things. I would like the app better if it was more obvious and I didn't have to read through questions and answers and be directed to the help center where there's a lot of reading to be done because I don't have time for that.

### 2/5 — Infuriating

*2020-03-08, version 1.21.149*

Device is cool but the app is useless.

EVERYtime I go to use it, the interface insists I go through 97 “pointers” on how the dumb thing works.

Maybe users need those reminders because the app stinks.

### 4/5 — Great alternative to cellphones

*2020-02-28, version 1.21.149*

So far we have loved this in our family!! We just bought a second for another kid. I would love to see an updated option to have “do not disturb” activate on a scheduled time, ie. school and bed time.

### 1/5 — ***They sold my number to spammers

*2020-01-04, version 1.20.166*

I bought a relay for My elderly mother and now I get spam calls/ texts to Dorothy (my 86 year old mother) every 10 minutes, literally. Plus it never worked. Garbage product, garbage people.

### 3/5 — Love the idea

*2019-12-26, version 1.20.166*

I was excited to get this gadget for my girls. I wanted them to be able to contact their family and friends without needing a actual phone. However I wish it worked differently. I wish you could just enter contacts with phone numbers for them to be able to call instead of needing everyone to have the app in order to converse with them. I’ll see how this goes but I don’t see me keeping the device or subscription with how it functions.

### 1/5 — Bugs

*2019-12-25, version 1.20.166*

Lousy coding

### 4/5 — Add Watch App

*2019-11-03, version 1.18.87*

A Watch app would be a great addition to this.

### 2/5 — GPS is delayed

*2019-09-18, version 1.17.51*

It takes about 5mins for the GPS to update my child’s location. Which to me is a huge problem.

### 2/5 — Update interferes with awesomeness

*2019-09-09, version 1.17.45*

App no longer opens on my iPad and the GPS is now less accurate than it was before the latest geofencing update. I can’t zoom in close enough to the map to see where the relay is - it’s just a general area with a circle now. Also Messages don’t come through like a walkie-talkie anymore. Now we have to punch the button 20 times to hopefully play the correct/ current message. 9 times out of 10 it doesn’t. Used to love our relay now it’s barely functional. 😞

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Glitching. Sometime it works.

*2022-02-27, version 2.2.0*

The App is glitching. It does not alert me when my son sends me a message. I tried to troubleshoot with the Relay team and it did not solve my problem.
My son cannot replay messages I send. It doesn’t alert him when I sent him a message. It doesn’t alert him when he gets out of network. The app just stopped working today. I saw my son tried to send me messages, but the app refuses to open. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn’t work.

### 1/5 — Typical

*2021-10-30, version 2.0.2*

Followed instructions precisely. Successfully setup new login and password, according to the App generated email. Then attempted to login. Doesn’t recognize me. You had your chance. Next. Can you refund me my time, please?

### 1/5 — Does the job…with annoyances

*2021-09-30, version 1.30.3*

I like this device for locating and staying in communication with my son (7) when he is away from home. It does that but with some annoying factors… 1. Battery life. We’ve had it for less than a year and it requires daily charging. 2. The app must be closed and restarted (sometimes twice) before the GPS locator will refresh. As I’m tracking my kid when he’s on his way home on the bus I am having to constantly close the app, reopen it and refresh the GPS locator.

### 1/5 — Don’t bother

*2021-09-01, version 1.30.3*

Doesn’t work

### 1/5 — Don’t buy refurbished

*2021-08-22, version 1.30.3*

We bought a certified refurbished unit directly from Relay. We spent several weeks going back and forth with support to activate the device including them sending an over the air update. By the time they concluded there was a hardware defect the 30 day warranty had expired and this now goes into the trash.

### 1/5 — Not reliable

*2021-02-09, version 1.28.60*

We have a love:hate relationship with these things. When they work, they serve our purpose (to communicate with my kids while they ski around the mountain). The problem is that they randomly quit working. They go offline at odd times (in our house with good cell and wifi), they quit providing audio, the app is unable to switch channels or open the missed messages... the list of faults is pretty long and frustrating. We thoroughly tested them for the first 30 days to ensure they would work during the return window and they worked mostly well during that time (with some annoying lack of features). But now that we are just past 30 days we are experiencing constant problems.

### 1/5 — Can’t cancel

*2020-05-27, version 1.23.19*

Seems to be an ok app. However canceling the membership is such a pain. They don’t give you the option of canceling right away. You have to send a “message” to customer representatives on the app who then will respond accordingly. The website also does not give an easy option to cancel bc there is NO option to cancel !!!! Makes it really inconvenient.

### 1/5 — Absolute horrible app

*2020-04-21, version 1.23.19*

The phone it’s self cute. The app is horrible doesn’t work I’ve tried over 100 times. Their customers service is a joke. Can’t tell them the app doesn’t work. With that fill in the blank bs. Grr

### 1/5 — Can’t cancel

*2020-03-22, version 1.22.38*

Didn’t work for my family. Tried to cancel several times. Still trying. No customer service.

### 1/5 — Not a good, accurate tracking device for your child

*2020-01-23, version 1.20.171*

The location on this tracker is very sketchy. Even with the new update to every 5 minutes, it doesn’t tell me when my son leaves a geofence sometimes, even when I’m in the app and manually refreshing the location. I’ve complained and they just said it’s not a real time tracker, that it refreshes every 10 minutes (not true) and asked for screen shots. My son has rode the bus all the way home before it even tells me he left school.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — We use the heck out of these things.

*2022-01-27, version 2.1.3*

From what I understand your business models have changed, but we have the Relay that was marketed to keep in touch with kids. I have two of them for two of my oldest kids. I really don’t want to get my 10-year-old a cell phone yet or any kind of smart device. These are great to keep in touch with my kids when I drop them off at practices or for when they takeoff on their bikes and go a little farther than I can see them with their friends. We really like the updated app, it works really well and is user-friendly. I hope you continue to offer the service. I love the Geo fence that I can put up so I know if my child is at the soccer fields, or at a friends house, or at the pool in our neighborhood. The size of the device is perfect to slip in a backpack or in a pocket and we also sometimes use the lanyard. Customer service has also been great as we received a faulty charging cable with our last relay. Customer service immediately sent us a charging dock.

### 5/5 — Perfect solution

*2021-05-13, version 1.29*

This app and the Relay device have been a perfect solution for our family. With two kids 10 and under riding the bus to and from school, the geotracking allowed me to see when they arrived or if they were on their way home while on the bus.

Connecting with multiple adults/cell phone users in the family allowed last minute mishaps for pick up or drop off to be communicated timely and effectively.

During the summer it was a perfect solution when the kids wanted to play outside or go to a friend’s house.

There have not been any missed messages and I always get a notification when a message is sent even if the app is closed.

Customer service was fantastic when our device stopped working after almost two years. Very happy with the app, the device and the service.

Tip: skip wifi set up so that it relies on data.

### 5/5 — Fantastic Idea

*2020-01-17, version 1.20.171*

This is exactly what I was looking for and it really helps me to know my daughter’s location while she is commuting to/from school and being able to send and receive voice messages from here is an added bonus. The relay support team also has been very helpful so far and have assisted promptly each time. One suggestion I would give is to have a option to have different location update frequency when the device is inside a geofence and outside because that can help with the battery as most of the times the device is inside the geofence.

### 5/5 — Amazing !!!!

*2019-11-13, version 1.19.70*

I love it

### 5/5 — Love the device!

*2019-03-10, version 1.12.83*

I was looking for a walkie talkie/gps type device for my son to use while playing outside with the neighbor. We live in a rural area and have had issues with other devices and I didn’t want to give him an actual phone. The relay was the perfect solution. We had some challenges with the device saying it was offline initially and messages not going thru but their customer service has been amazing (honestly the best I’ve ever experienced). They sent a couple different SIM cards and we found one that provides the best coverage when they’re not connected to WiFi.
The gps doesn’t provide the nitty gritty detail that I’d prefer living in the woods but it’s good enough to do the job.
The app has provided some challenges which the company has been very good about trouble shooting with me. The app needs to actually be open (not in the background) to actually hear my kiddo’s message which I don’t care for. I do get the notification tho, so I can see he’s tried to reach me and just ask him to repeat.
We ultimately chose to purchase a second device so I could just use that instead of the app to ensure we didn’t have any missed communications. Considering he’s outside playing or back and forth at the neighbors house literally all day on the weekends and on summer vacation, it’s money well spent!

### 5/5 — Kids can be kids / Parents can breathe easy

*2018-12-30, version 1.10.143*

I grew up in a midwestern town. My friends and I roamed around on bikes and skateboards. We hung out at each other’s houses. We were aware but unaware that a caring community of neighbors and parents were watching out/over us.

My kids do not have this same community. Most parents are working and the neighborhood in my east coast city community is not strongly family oriented.

I believe in letting the kids roam but needed a way to keep tabs and stay in touch.

I have no interest in putting cell phones into their orbit. Little minds, heck even my slightly larger/older brain, struggle to resist the nonsense that a smartphone would pipe into their headspace.

So I’ve been hoping for something like a relay for awhile. Freedom and simplicity for the kids. Communication and location info for me. Bingo!

We picked up a few Relays this past week. Wish I had tried these sooner. The kids have taken to them like ducks to water. They’ve been a few blocks away skating for 3 hours. Regular checkins and jokes are flowing back and forth. I’m encouraging their friends to get them - this is so much better than a smartphone. The emphasis is on the people - not the device/app.

### 5/5 — Finally found what I was looking for

*2018-08-19, version 1.6.121*

Relay has been the perfect solution for my family, so much better than kid trackers we tried like gizmo pal- my daughter actually loves using this. I was amazed how well it works, communicating is crystal clear and the recent updates have made it better and better. Psyched that my daughter can send an alert to my phone to let me know she wants to talk

### 5/5 — Great product!

*2018-07-25, version 1.5.44*

We love this product as an alternative to a cell phone. Our oldest is going to middle school and this is a way to communicate with him without giving him a phone. The app allows you to talk to the Relay unit and hear what the other person is saying. I like that you can send a push notification to the app by pressing the power button in the unit. The app also allows you to see the battery percentage of all your units as well as their location. This is a new company and they are making things better with each update.

### 4/5 — Getting frustrated

*2020-08-26, version 1.25.66*

Was great when it launched but they keep adding features but not useful ones. Now it’s less useful. Missed messages doesn’t work. If the app isn’t open I can’t hear messages. And the hardware is annoying because 1) I can’t tell buttons apart and 2) sometimes it doesn’t work properly. Promising but needs work

### 4/5 — Needs improvements

*2020-07-31, version 1.24.96*

I don’t have a lot of complains but one is that it needs to show that you’ve sent a message back. I ended up sending my kid like 50 messages not knowing if they were sending or what.
