Trying to find a paint color to match an unknown existing wall (or other surface) color? Or maybe find lighter or darker colors of the same hue, or possibly complementary colors? FindPaintColor finds the best-match paint colors from thousands available from major paint vendors, by analyzing a photo of your unknown color with a specified white color chip available free from your paint dealer. The photo is taken within the app, and must be taken in natural (window) lighting only. Although other high-accuracy solutions require an external color sensor, FindPaintColor uses the iPhone camera and advanced image processing, so no separate color measurement device is required. Accuracy is similar to external color sensing devices, and will identify the nearest few color chips for your final match, including the many that are available but not usually on display at your paint store. The app can save multiple trips back and forth to your dealer and eliminates the vexing need to bring in a sample. It finds paints from these four major paint vendors: Behr, Benjamin Moore, PPG, and Sherwin Williams. The app also finds paints darker or lighter than your color, and complementary colors, using industry-standard color wheel methods. It provides industry-standard ‘sRGB’ (standard Red Green Blue) values, to allow finding paints from other vendors. It also shows HSV (Hue Saturation Value) and LRV (Light Reflectance Value) numbers, to help you compare colors numerically as well as by eye. The required white color chip is used by the app to measure ambient light – a must for accuracy, and as long used by professional photographers to ensure color accuracy. Which is by itself a little complicated. Did an absolutely terrible job matching colors. Try it against a couple Benjamin Moore colors. I actually knew what they were. Following the App Walkthrough video at findpaintcolor.com is a good way to confirm the app is being used correctly.... ### 5/5 — Good idea must worked in certain environments *2025-07-23* Hi I got the white chip 7006 from Sherwin Williams and placed any color chip according to your photo tips your app would always mis identify the color chip, I felt perhaps the lighting and other condition like iPhone HW would play into this? In reality since lots of pine woods are textured so this app did not detect much, I decided to give a five star and my free donation as a encouragement for the developers to share more of h the app limitation and maybe improve it because after all it’s a good idea. **Developer response:** Hi LentleSoup: Thanks for taking the time to review - appreciated. Sounds like you were trying to get a color match for textured pine wood, and yes that could be problematic: the grain of the wood is variable in color, and the texture can create shadows and bright edges if it is lit from the side. The app will average this all out to come up with a color match, but a solid single color of this average can look pretty different than the varied wood. However, the app can do a good job in matching already-stained or painted wood (siding for example), especially by taking 2-3 readings in different side-lighting. ### 5/5 — worked well *2025-07-06* this app saved me from having to paint my entire ceiling. It took me a bit to figure out how to use it. The instructions weren’t very clear, but once I got it figured out, I was able to match the paint color to my ceiling and didn’t have to paint the whole thing. Amazing. I even tried with a vendor paint chip against the white reference chip and the app never guessed the right color. Maybe it’s sensitive to lighting conditions? Also the apps identifiers for paint chips/colors seem out of date (for behr anyway) **Developer response:** Hi ts1138: FindPaintColor has a usual color accuracy of dE of 2.0 or less, which means 'a small difference, apparent to the trained eye', and this has been confirmed by extensive testing on a wide variety of paint chips and actual paint, including Behr', under varying conditions. Thanks in advance! ### 1/5 — Waste of money *2025-05-19, version 2.4.4* The colors it showed as a match weren't even remotely close no matter how many times I took a new pic and tried again. Very disappointed and out $4 ### 2/5 — No support *2025-03-30* App is useless without one of several “paint chips” with standard white color. They give you a list but zero support in getting those in your home to take the needed photo. **Developer response:** As mentioned on the Product Page and Web Site, FindPaintColor does require one of the specified white Chips listed (so it can achieve high accuracy), available free at your paint dealer, or also available free by mail from one major paint vendor, as described at findpaintcolor.com. The app is wide daily successful use, so although it is a bit of a pain to get the white chip, this does pay off in delivering accurate results without the need of an external color sensor. ### 5/5 — Did not work *2025-03-19* The app was difficult to navigate and did not even come close to matching paint color. **Developer response:** Sorry to hear about your experience. Thanks in advance. ### 4/5 — Instructions are easy *2025-03-05* Instructions are clear and easy, just need to get the base white paint swatches before starting. I used 2 different paint swatches and took images in about 6 different areas. I didn’t get the same 1 2 & 3 color recommendations each time, but my ceiling has knockdown and creates small shadows everywhere. I counted all the colors that showed up in the top 3 recommendations. The color that showed up the most times ended up being 100% accurate. **Developer response:** Thanks so much for providing this nicely-detailed feedback. The app does not hassle for reviews, so it is highly appreciated that you took the time to provide this. ### 2/5 — Cool idea, sadly did work *2025-02-09* Yes, this app is a bit tricky to use. In particular, it would be nicer if it had some type of eye dropper tool to make sampling the swatches easier and more flexible. However, I rated it low because the color match was not sufficiently accurate. It makes sense that a standard color swatch would help calibrate the process. So, I got the standard white swatch from Benjamin Moore as well as a few sample paint chips to test against. For the ones I tried, the proposed match list didn’t include the actual color name which was on the chip. Because of that misalignment, I cannot recommend even tho the idea has merit. **Developer response:** Hi spoonbls: Thanks much for taking the time to provide this feedback. While it can happen rarely that the match list does not include the actual chip name (for example, for Benjamin Moore's 'Tapestry Beige' there are over 20 highly similar colors, that are nearly indistinguishable from each other, and that the app might judge them all to be a slightly closer match), but it is not likely that this would occur on multiple paint chips. Testing of the app on a wide variety of Benjamin Moore color chips and paint samples shows accuracy in the dE less than 2 or so region, which means 'a small color difference, apparent to the trained eye'. So the app is pretty accurate in extensive testing. So, there seems to be some other issue at play here.
