Imagine being able to articulate a MIDI recording with the bow while not having to try to play the notes at the same time which is extremely difficult. At least for me anyway. As it is at the moment, I can only really use the app to add some details to recordings using other apps to make their sampled or synthesised strings sound more realistic. ### 3/5 — Good start, could be better *2022-06-03, version 1.3* In terms of raw expressive power, FingerFiddle is quite powerful, certainly on par with SWAM instruments. For the price, it can’t be beaten. So it is a shame that, for all its good qualities, FingerFiddle is not on par with baseline standards for instrument apps. One thing that would drastically improve the quality of FingerFiddle is oversampling. Performing slow glissandi or sul ponticello on the high strings reveals the telltale “AM radio tuning” of aliasing distortion. This alone makes the app unsuitable for solo performances or any situation (effects, reverb) where the aliasing would increase. There is also the matter of control. Ideally, there would be some support for MIDI and MPE input AND output, possibly with each string allocated to its own channel. I also noticed that, though five-string basses are common for cinematic music and pops repertoire, no such option is available for the bass models. This is disappointing, though not as mission-critical as MIDI or sound engine improvements. Until these changes are implemented, this is a novelty, not a performance tool. ### 4/5 — Super, mais... *2020-08-06, version 1.3* Son assez réaliste avec un bon contrôle de l’archet, et la possibilité de tempérer les notes ou de jouer les micro-intervalles (et les fausses notes donc, comme sur un vrai violon). Quelques points faibles : - la fonction de vibrato, qui existe, mais pas accessible dans ma version (je ne sais pas pourquoi) - les pizzicatos un peu décevants (manque de nuances) - pas d’AUv3, donc impossible de créer un quatuor à cordes dans un séquenceur - dommage qu’on ne puisse choisir l’orientation de l’archet (je préfèrerais des mouvements verticaux pour ma part) *** Sounds realistic with a good bow control, and possibility to temperate the keys or to play micro-tuning (like on a real violin). Some minor flaws : - the vibrato is here but not activable (and i don’t know why) - pizzicatos sound quite flat - no AUv3 implementation, so we can’t emulate any string quartet in our DAW - too bad we can’t set vertical moves for the bow (seem more natural than horizontal moves to me) ### 5/5 — Awesumm app. Sounds so realistic.!! *2020-06-13, version 1.2.0* Hey developer, this is an awesumm innovation. Please work on another instruments using the concept. A rare thing to find in a myriad of imitators. Bravo !!!! ### 5/5 — Astonishing app *2019-09-08, version 1.2.0* An excellent bowed strings set, with lots of expressivity. The viola da gamba family would be welcome, and MIDI controls too! ### 5/5 — Unbelievably good *2019-06-28, version 1.2.0* The quality of this program is hard to believe. The sound is as dynamic as the original instrument. The way it reacts to changing the stroke direction is very realistic, there's no way to do this with samples. The specific quality of each of the four string instruments is preserved very well: four players with four iPads (and four amplifiers) could do a very good impersonation of a string quartet. At the same time the interface is easier to play than the original, and it's very configurable too: the pitch note is correct wherever your fingers land (as if having frets like on a guitar), but you can disable this feature if you want even more realism. Another very welcome setting changes the pitch of each string. I set the intervals between strings to fourths instead of the original fifths, so that the fingering is closer to that of a guitar or bass. Something very hard to do on the original: you can play three or four strings at the same time, not just one or two. :-) As good as this program is, you can only play it via the touchscreen: it has no MIDI input. Driving it from my LinnStrument would be awesome. Matthias, what do you say? :-) ### 5/5 — Easily the best strings app *2019-05-23, version 1.2.0* This is by far the most realistic, expressive and enjoyable violin/cello app I’ve used so far, and I’ve tried pretty much every other app that tries to do this. The expressiveness is far, far beyond what any other controller gives you, especially with 3D Touch, the bends are some of the most natural I’ve experienced, and feel exactly how I’d want them to feel on a physical instrument, and the sounds are amazing (especially the warm, smooth Viola). I am truly blown away. My only request is please, PLEASE add Apple Pencil 2 pressure support for the bow force to mimic 3D Touch on the iPad, it would be amazing to have this same expressiveness on the larger device. ### 5/5 — Great app *2019-04-05, version 1.2.0* If you are looking to simulate an isolated violin performance, this can’t be beat. Playing it to sound like a fiddle (playing adjacent open strings) is challenging, but nothing is perfect. The developer is very responsive and enthusiastic about his creation. Well worth the money. ### 5/5 — Enthralling...♥️🎶🎻🎸🎶 *2018-12-17, version 1.2.0* Been testing the audio in my jamup app channels with my new guitar interface and recorded the cello and my virtual Stratocaster playing solo guitar. The two sit so well together in harmonics that I’m thinking of using the cello too in my songwriting of something I’m making. I have a real live Stratocaster too but haven’t recorded it yet with the new interface but sure will and I think it’ll also sound good with the cello. It’s always lovely to keep getting more positive musical inspirations. ♥️🎶 God bless you. ### 4/5 — Best of its class, BUT SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO KEEP BEING SUPPORTED *2018-12-12, version 1.2.0* These are the best sounding strings you'll find on iOS. None even come close, this IS the STRINGS KING. I use this for music production, and it's brilliant. The last update was two years ago, so I'm thinking this app will become obsolete eventually if the dev doesn't continually update it to support iOS changes and/or new features and sounds for the app. PLEASE KEEP UPDATING, I'LL KEEP BUYING, YOU DESERVE IT! ### 5/5 — Close as you can get *2018-10-11, version 1.2.0* As I cellist I have to say this is not quite the same thing - but it’s as close as you can possibly get with a touch interface, and the range of expression is superb. This is not quite a stringed instrument - but it’s close enough to do almost everything. It’s also good software: small memory footprint, good performance, *exceptionally* responsive even on old hardware, and a simple and clean interface. ### 4/5 — A must for every composer. *2018-09-28, version 1.2.0* Every composer should have this in their arsenal. I keep going back to this app again and again. It is so expressive and is a great example of how great the iPad interface can be as super tactile hands on performance tool. This makes me think about music differently and thus lets me create something unique. The way you play it forces you out of your usual musical tropes and that can be a real asset when you’ve been staring a computer screen for hours waiting for inspiration but nothing is coming out ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not what I expected :-/ *2023-02-15, version 1.3* This is not an app for musicians or educators… the layout of the violin fingerboard isn’t realistic. I expected that when pressing the fingerboard you would be able to hear sounds, but this doesn’t have that function. Also the fingerboard should have a custom setting option for the pitches that can be selected/played, but in this app, the pitches on the fingerboard are locked into fixed keys so notes are limited to one key. Very annoying. Please don’t waste your money on this. After purchasing it you will be prompted to spend additional $ on sounds which should have been included in the first purchase. ### 1/5 — Not so great *2022-07-10, version 1.3* Used it but the 3d bow and vibrato not working. I assumed that that’s what I was paying for. It’s actually a cello. Why isn’t that in the title? I downloaded it and noticed that there was an additional cost for the violin. I went back to the app description to see, and the fact that the violin isn’t included in this already paid application is nicely hidden in the long description. Very clever! ### 1/5 — Needing updates *2018-03-30, version 1.2.0* This works flawlessly with 3D touch and fluid multi touch capability of the iphone. I am using iphone 8plus now and its crashing very frequently after ios 11.2 Also it doesnt record in garageband as inter app audio instrument. As soon as i start recording it mutes and then i have to relaunch garageband. Please make it playable so that i can record it n use it within my garageband/logic projects. ### 1/5 — Useless for a violin player. *2018-03-25, version 1.2.0* The name of the app includes the ‘fiddle’.. except you have to pay an extra 5 pounds to get access to a violin. It wants you to buy every instrument separately at high cost. I’m impressed you can do detailed expressions like marcato, spicatto, and a crisp staccato. After several hours of practice, it genuinely sounds GOOD. Which is more than I can say for any other virtual strings library, which always leaves me cringing a little bit at the fake sound. With a dynamic range of harmonic overtones FF is the closest thing to that beautiful cello or mournful viola solo this side of hiring YoYo Ma that you could ever hope to get. I’ve attempted to recreate these sounds in my studio via soundfonts, samples, and various VSTs for years. None of them comes even close to FF. Not in tonal quality. Not in depth of realism, and especially, and most refreshingly, not in price. If you’re a serious producer, musician, or even just someone curious to learn or play. I can’t thank the developers enough for this. And, my only feedback for the future would be to diversify into more instruments. Guitars, lap steels, mandolin, resonators, ukulele... even woodwinds, brass and percussion. I’d buy every app on its public release date! Thank you again for the remarkablly realistic and sonically stunning sound. I love it!!! And I love you!!! Cheers mates! ### 5/5 — Pleasantly Suprised *2020-10-27, version 1.3* I love this app. I’ve been on a quest for the perfect cello app. I bought iSymphonic which sounds phenomenal but doesn’t give you much control. Garageband has great string sounds and lots of options but again, you’re not actually playing cello. I almost bought one to learn on! I gotta say tho, this cheap little app has some promise. Once you get the hang of it, it starts feeling like a real cello. Ed è un grande tributo da parte di uno che fa lo stesso mestiere e, fra l'altro, fra gli strumenti di ThumbJam, ha anche violoncelli e violini, ma sicuramente non all' altezza della bontà sonora e realistica di questa applicazione assolutamente magnifica. Abbiamo tra le mani un vero strumento con una curva di apprendimento non facile. Ma ne vale assolutamente la pena metterci le mani sopra per imparare a fare qualcosa. La versione free ha il violoncello, ma anche tutti gli altri strumenti da poter provare prima dell'acquisto. Questo il sorprendente risultato della modellazione fisica in poco più di 20MB!
