## What is fink?

Somewhere right now a rare bird turns up. Someone spots it, a point appears on the map, and for a few hours that place matters.

Until now those moments disappeared into notebooks, WhatsApp groups and chat histories. With fink they become visible.

fink is a modern tool for birdwatching: a live map of the bird world and your own species archive. Built on Helgoland, one of the most important migration sites in Europe.

fink is a subscription app. A Standard or Pro membership is required for the features below. New users get a 7-day free trial.

THE LIVING MAP
See in real time which birds are being reported around you. Log your own sighting outside, in seconds. Everyone else sees straight away where something is happening.

IDENTIFY BIRDS
Not sure what you just saw? Answer a few short questions about size, colour and behaviour, or upload a photo. FinkDetector suggests the most likely species, based on our own European bird database.

YOUR SPECIES ARCHIVE
Every sighting lands in your personal bird atlas: species, photo, location, date. Properly documented and easy to find again. No writing up in the evening, no spreadsheets.

THE BIRD WIKI
More than 900 European species with our own illustrations: field marks, habitat, diet, migration, eggs, and how common the species is where you are, month by month.

THE COMMUNITY
Follow other birders, confirm sightings near you, join guilds and talk in the feed and in chats. Birdwatching is better together.

PHOTO CONTESTS
Submit your best shots and vote on the finalists.

WHY FINK
Birding is popular, but the digital tools for it still feel like 2010. fink does not change the hobby, it makes what you already do easier and better. And many individual observations add up to a dataset that supports research and conservation.

By the way: in Halunder, the language of Helgoland, fink simply means bird.

No ads. We do not sell your data.

SUBSCRIPTION
Standard: 3.99 EUR per month or 34.99 EUR per year.
Pro: 6.99 EUR per month or 64.99 EUR per year, adding a 3D globe, your own guilds and contest jury access.
New users get a 7-day free trial. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage and cancel them in your Apple ID settings.

### 5/5 — Eine tolle App

*2026-08-23*

Ganz klare Empfehlung!

### 5/5 — Amazing app

Every detail is so thoughtful and it’s so much fun to learn about birds and track everything, simply amazing

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-26

Faster, calmer, and a new start.

The map used to keep computing even when nothing was happening. That is fixed: it now comes to rest, and your location is no longer polled at full precision every second. You will notice it in battery life and temperature.

New
• A new welcome screen: fink greets you with the living map instead of an off-the-shelf landscape.
• The map opens in a view that actually shows something. Tap the map icon to tilt between flat and angled, double tap to return to the default view.
• Chat now supports photos, locations, your own sightings, bird cards, reactions, replies, editing and deleting. Use @ to mention people.
• New "Performance" settings page: choose how many pins each map draws, separately for live map, guild and globe.
• The full-screen globe filters by favorites, "not in atlas" and friends.
• New map filters: friends only, not in atlas, just now.

Improved
• A bird that does not occur at your location now requires a photo as proof.
• Wiki search works in both languages: "Common Blackbird" and "Amsel" both find the same bird.
• Proof photos taken of a camera display are now accepted.

Fixed
• Crashes when zooming out and when opening chat or guilds.
• Freezes of several seconds and permanently high battery drain.
• The keyboard covered the chat input.
• On Android: blurry bird heads, blotchy atlas birds, pins that only appeared after zooming out, picker wheels that would not spin, and headings in the wrong font.

Plus more than a hundred smaller fixes!

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-19

Deine Fotos bringen dir jetzt Federn.

Ausserdem in diesem Update:

### 1.1.4 — 2026-08-16

Guilds, properly.

• Roles and permissions: owner, admin, moderator, member
• Control how people join: open, on request or invite only, plus a join question and a minimum number of sightings
• Decide what non-members see: map, member list and photos
• Find guilds that fit: recommendations by friends, distance and category, with filters and sorting
• Invitations, a leaderboard, a record-shot gallery and a guild atlas of its own
• Friends' pins on the map now carry their profile picture

### 1.1.0 — 2026-08-01

New name, same app: Fink becomes fink - birdwatching community.

Community and creators
• The feeds are now Friends, Everyone and Creators
• Bird News shows real posts: like, comment and open profiles
• Institutions have their own profile you can follow
• Become a creator: requirements and progress now live in Settings

Comments
• Reply, edit and delete your own comments
• Editing stays open until someone replies
• Newest comments first, and you are notified when someone replies
• Comments, pins and photos can be reported

Photos
• Every photo now shows the photographer's name and picture
• Manage your own wiki photos: move them to another species or delete them
• Upload many photos at once
• Galleries lead with variety instead of the same shot repeated

Profile
• Separate sections for sighting photos and wiki photos
• Your birding year at a glance
• Pin a favourite photo
• Your profile picture now sits in the navigation bar

Map and sightings
• Fixed a crash when confirming a sighting
• Confirming extends the pin timer instead of resetting it
• Confirming now counts like a sighting of your own
• The atlas check only shows for birds you have yourself

Plus many more fixes across the map, comments, profiles and notifications.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-07-20

• Bug fixes and various stability improvements.
• Improved overall app responsiveness and performance.
