## What is Fíor?

Fíor reads the barcode on a food pack and tells you where it is really from.

Country-of-origin labelling has gaps you can drive a lorry through. "Produced in Ireland" can mean the packet was filled here. A tricolour on the front of a pack is a design choice, not a claim. Fíor goes past the front of the pack and reads the parts that are regulated.

What it looks at

The oval health mark, the small EC stamp on meat, dairy and fish. It carries the approval number of the plant that last handled the food, and Fíor checks that number against the Irish register — so you get the actual name and county of the place, not a flag.

The egg stamp. The first digit is the farming method, from organic down to caged, and the letters after it are the country and the producer. Fíor reads the whole code.

The barcode itself. A GS1 prefix tells you which country's numbering authority issued the number. That is a weaker signal than the health mark and Fíor says so rather than dressing it up.

The words on the front. Ireland is unusual in having written down what "artisan", "farmhouse", "traditional" and "natural" are supposed to mean — the Food Safety Authority of Ireland set the criteria out in Guidance Note 29. Fíor tells you what the word is meant to require, so you can decide whether the product in your hand looks like it.

How sure it is

Every answer comes with its evidence and how strong that evidence is. A health mark checked against the register is not the same kind of fact as a country field somebody typed into a database, and the two are never shown as if they were. Where the record is blank, Fíor will reason out a best guess and label it as a guess, with the reasons it used.

Allergens and what you avoid

Tell Fíor what you need to stay away from and it will flag it when a product declares it, including "may contain" warnings.

It will never tell you a food is safe. There is no green light in this app and there never will be. The data underneath is crowd-sourced and manufacturers reformulate without notice, so the strongest thing Fíor will say about an allergen it cannot find is that it is not in the record it has — and it will tell you to read the pack. A wrong warning wastes your time. A wrong all-clear could put someone in hospital.

Privacy

There are no accounts, no sign-in and no tracking. Your allergen profile and your scan history stay on the phone. The camera is used to read a barcode and for nothing else — no image is recorded, stored or sent anywhere.

Free, with nothing to buy.

Fíor uses product data from Open Food Facts, an open database contributed to by the public. Records can be incomplete or out of date, which is exactly why the app shows you what it is standing on.
