### 5/5 — Best Southern Africa birding App!!

*2025-04-08, version 3.2.5*

This is honestly the only App you’ll ever need for Southern African Birding. Constantly being updated, plenty of excellent photos, and quality sound recordings! The App is so easy to use and navigate, very user friendly, and the general flow is very smooth. My favorite part is the weekly articles…ranging from birding, photography, deep dive into the genetics and science of species, or just fun funky stories! All this for ONLY R79.99 pm, OR basically the price of a Grande Frappuccino from Starbucks!?😜

### 5/5 — Unbelievable!

*2025-04-05, version 3.2.5*

Couldn’t dream of a better app than this!

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2024-10-30*

I want to complement you on your app. First time user after using Robert’s and Sasol app for years (I have the original Robert’s bird book from way back). So much easier to search birds now and make lists. Just completing a trip to Botswana and Zimbabwe. Highlight was rosy throated longclaw on Chobe river bank. We had a professional bird guide and he was really excited. I have taken thousands of pics of birds. 140 species so far on this trip.

**Developer response:** Thank you for sharing your experience! Wow, that Longclaw sighting sounds like a story worth telling! Feel free to write to us and share your story / trip report. It could end up featuring in the Dawn Chorus articles.

### 5/5 — Birding Apps

*2024-10-19*

Jam-packed with great content and user interface is simple and easy to follow.

### 5/5 — Beautiful piece of art and useful

*2024-09-29*

Thus app is stunning. It’s also extremely well functioning. The sounds, photos and beautiful paintings are fab. The list and mapping function is really useful! From a photographer and birder this app is stunning and so useful!

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2023-12-09, version 3.0.15*

I have been using this app for a month or more and it has enabled me to start identifying and confirming bird species through their calls. I have always struggled with bird calls but the way the calls are communicated (even giving the other background calls) has been massively beneficial

### 5/5 — Fantastic and unique

*2023-12-07, version 3.0.15*

This app is a perfect balance between brevity and detail for each species account. Moreover, the added features such as Dawn Chorus and frequent updates of new species as well as the additional content for existing species, is unique. It’s a true dynamic and live app that provides much interaction.

### 5/5 — Absolutely brilliant!

*2023-09-14, version 3.0.14*

The best bird app for Southern Africa!! An added bonus: weekly podcasts, with accompanying photographs and/or illustrations jam-packed with information and anecdotes. Yes, it’s expensive, but ABSOLUTELY worth it!

### 5/5 — One of the best!

*2023-08-12, version 3.0.14*

What an amazing app. It is clear that a lot of effort went in to making this app!

When the time is right, please add a section where you can test your knowledge with a quiz of bird sounds and images. I find it easiest to learn new birds once I get questioned about them. Bird sounds is not as easy to learn though and if you could develop a way to learn these sounds, even as an alternative app, I will pay big money for such an app!

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2023-06-11, version 3.0.7*

Wow. What an informative, intuitive and extremely well designed bird app. Excellent quality.

### 5/5 — Excellent app

*2023-05-30, version 3.0.5*

Terrific local app, with a local bird focus that beats the international apps for me. Love the detailed and beautiful sketches, bird calls with annotations, handy tips and fascinating blog posts. And best of all, the team is always happy to interact if you pop them a mail asking for birding advice!

### 5/5 — App of the year! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

*2023-05-30, version 3.0.5*

The amount of work and attention to detail that has gone into this app is evident and so appreciated. So much I love about it, especially the annotations in the bird call sonographs - a genius addition. Works beautifully on iPhone 5se with iOS 15.7.1.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Useless without an expensive sub

*2025-03-27*

Don’t be fooled. The app is totally useless unless you pay for an expensive subscription. It looks potentially very nice and I would have no problem at all with paying an appropriate one-off price but this seems both deceptive and also a rip-off.

**Developer response:** Give the free trial a go on your next birding trip. If you still feel the same way, we’re sorry, it’s then not for you. If you feel different then, please come back here 😉

### 1/5 — Expensive for what you get.

*2024-01-29, version 3.0.15*

Not impressed, the features are not more than a lot of other bird apps but the cost is high. Suggest you look at BirdPro as an better alternative.

### 1/5 — Outrageous pricing

*2023-03-14, version 2.0.11*

Thia app is not for all avid birdwatchers - too expensive!

### 1/5 — Nasty subscription service

*2022-09-24, version 2.0.5*

I downloaded this app with great ideas to test it out.
Can’t even test it without giving them your whole pedigree and subscribing to a really expensive monthly service.
Quite overpriced when you look at the other options out there.
Or just go buy a good book?
Basically it is just too expensive and I am too scared to test it out and then get loaded with a monthly bill.

### 3/5 — Has potential but features need work/support

*2026-02-15*

So far, I like this app, but the feature to upload your life list from eBird doesn’t work and I wasn’t able to get support for it. App is still useful but not as compelling since I can’t keep track of my birds unless I go through and add hundreds of them manually.

**Developer response:** We have updated this feature. Please try it out again and let us know if it works for you.

Please send us an email to apps@plofskaap.co.za with any feedback.

### 3/5 — Good app but no lifetime purchase

*2025-11-29, version 4.5.1*

Don’t get sucked in.. the app is good but lifetime purchase or nothing from me.

Cheers

### 3/5 — Not many birds

*2023-11-16, version 3.0.14*

This app doesn’t include any starlings or sunbirds. It’s lacking in quite a few species and mainly has a lot of info about seabirds. You have to pay to use identification features, which isn’t ideal. It’s a good app for keeping track of sightings and locations but the downside is that you can only keep track very specific bird species.

It has potential, but it is lacking a lot. Especially with paid features despite the app seeming like it isn’t fully complete yet.

### 4/5 — Fun, informative, easy to use!

*2026-04-20, version 5.5.0*

This app is so much fun to have and use. The updates, the continuously added Dawn Choruses and now also the Whistlr bird call learning section, make this App worth so much more than the small subscription’s n fee I pay 😊 Love it !!!

### 4/5 — Excellent app

*2026-04-14, version 5.5.0*

I enjoy the app the images are realistic. It is easy to use the one thing is that it is R800 a year. l wish that you could make it possible to make a permanent offer on your bird app if you can explain why it is not possible l would appreciate it thank you very much and I hope you have an amazing and successful business .

### 5/5 — Needed!

Brilliant, thank you.

## Most praised reviews (9 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2026-07-13*

I’m not a big bird watcher, but, I got this app on my last trip to the Kruger, and it made me a birding fan! Well worth getting

**Developer response:** Thanks for sharing your experience and thank you so much for the review!

### 5/5 — The best birding app in Southern Africa.

*2026-05-09, version 5.5.0*

I am a student studying in Pretoria, and one thing I love doing to get rid of the stress of exams is going for bird walks in the area. This app utilises your location to determine nearby birds one might see and is simply life changing for quickly identifying birds. The Whistlr quizzes are great for learning calls and becoming a more well rounded birder. Also, the Dawn Chorus articles are a treat to read when wanting to go birding but being restricted to your home.

A big thank you to the team at Firefinch for building a super-app!

### 5/5 — Best bird app around

*2026-04-19, version 5.5.0*

Excellent bird app. Perfect balance between presentation and the amount of information shared. Bird distribution showing breakdown by region, sighting probability and month of the year is first class. Congratulations on and thank you for the awesome job done!

### 5/5 — Best guide for birders

*2026-04-09, version 5.5.0*

When I first started birding I wanted a way to now the call and then a fellow YouTuber named Villers Steyn started wearing there beautiful shirts and even using it as his guide for finding birds and bird calls defined the best

### 5/5 — My first choice

*2026-03-23, version 5.5.0*

It’s easy to use and it does the main job of identifying and logging easy. I also use Roberts, but this is my first go-to. It has loads of supporting content that regularly gets updated and fun ways of learning bird calls - whistler. I had one issue with list transfers from roberts and they responded quickly, kept me updated and sorted the issue. Highly recommended app. Well done guys.

### 5/5 — Refreshingly different bird app

*2025-12-14*

This app is easy to use, intuitive and enjoyable ! I think it would be useful for all levels of birding experience. It contains plenty of useful and interesting facts about birds, adequate photos, and recordings of calls. Also, the developers actually respond promptly to emails with suggestions and comments. This app is definitely worth the money!

### 5/5 — Highly recommend this app!

*2025-10-04, version 4.2.2*

This is the best bird app by far especially with the new location filter. If you have queries, the developers respond quickly. It’s revitalised my birding.

### 5/5 — Incredible

*2025-09-14*

This is the best bird app I’ve used anywhere in the world. Intuitive, informative, and innovative - an absolute joy to use.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re always looking to up our game. If you have any suggestions, please reach out to apps@plofskaap.co.za

### 5/5 — Great app and idea for the future

*2025-08-13, version 3.5.1*

I love this app, great insights and awesome drawings. Can I kindly ask that you look into a feature where you are able to list birds found within 50km radius of a spot selected. Thanks
