### 5/5 — Great for toddlers!

*2015-02-13*

My 3 yr old daughter loves this app!

### 5/5 — 3-year-old loves it and is learning her letters, shapes, numbers

*2014-03-12*

My 3-year-old not only had a great time playing with this app, she also started to learn from it. I was quite amazed at how quickly she was picking up some of the letters and numbers. Great job Learning Touch!

### 5/5 — Pro upgrade totally worth it

*2014-01-31*

I have an autistic 5 year old that finally learned to use his iPad all because of this game. Fun and educational. Lots of great topics. Love the parental controls to have just the words you want to work on.

### 5/5 — Great, expensive but not much out there

*2013-09-27*

I really like this app. I think it is a little expensive but my 2 yr old isn't talking but loves this app. Doesn't use it all the time but he does have some extended sessions with it.

### 5/5 — LOVE

*2013-04-09*

This app is absolutely amazing for my 20 month old. We spent a couple minutes on it every day for a week and he just didn't really show any interest. Then one day I handed it to him and it just clicked!!! He zooms through the words!!! I am so happy, love this app!!!

### 5/5 — Spot 0n!

*2013-02-11*

Could not have made it easier or better to use. Kids love it

### 4/5 — Pro words

*2013-01-27*

My 3 year old grandson keeps going to this App. He enjoys dragging the letters to the correct place and hearing the words.

### 5/5 — A fun learning app!

*2012-09-20*

I am a teacher trainer and I first tried out the free sampler. I liked the simplicity of the response to spelling words and the immediate feedback including animations. The pro version has easy to select word categories and game options that you can choose such as word length. This is a terrific app for young children who are learning letter concepts.

### 4/5 — Love it!

*2012-08-01*

I love this app for my 2 year old. I downloaded the free app first. She was able to catch on after four times. My niece 3 years old caught on after 3 times. So I invested in the pro version. The only downside is I know there is more than tan and red colors lol. Great investment to promote independent learning.

### 5/5 — Great way to teach toddlers to recognize letter forms

*2012-05-24*

Our two year old loves dragging letters and spelling words. He already recognizes and repeats the names of several letters after playing this educational game.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Languages

*2015-02-20*

It only comes with the English version. Unlike the sampler that has a few different languages I was upset this only offers English.

**Developer response:** First Words Professional now supports five languages: Spanish, French, German, and Japanese, as well as US and British English. You select the language on the Options screen.

### 1/5 — French

*2015-01-27*

I wanted a French version and i made a mistake

**Developer response:** First Words Professional now includes French, as well as Spanish, German, Japanese, and US and British English. You select the language on the Options screen.

### 1/5 — This is only about a 50 word app (with phonic name words enabled) - beware!

*2012-05-13*

So I bought this for my daughter hoping I could use the "Options" menu and have the guy who pronounces the letters when you drag and drop a letter to use the phonic name sound instead of the letter name sound. I was greatly disappointed because when I changed the options to use the phonic name sound during the drag and drop, the category words was GREATLY REDUCED. For instance, regarding the "Color" category...it went from about 20 color words for the "letter names sounds" to 2 colors words for "phonic names sounds" (only "Red" and "Tan" are options for phonic names words). THIS IS BAD! This is the same thing for each category - it's greatly reduced when using the phonic name "Option" versus the Letter Name option. So instead of it really being 350 Words its really about 50 words total when the phonic name words are enabled...this is very mis-leading! Please fix "Clozure Associates" and I might give you a better star rating...'com'on, this is a 10 dollar app, i would think it would be full featured for all 350 words (equal Letter AND phonic sounded out words).

### 2/5 — For preschool/early exposure to reading

*2016-12-02*

I bought this for a kindergartner expecting it to be early reading sentences/books that increased in difficulty. It's actually aimed at those JUST starting to put letters together /beginning to understand words. Perhaps if the child was not previously in an academic preschool program /parents had not yet started early reading/child had learning delays etc the description would be appropriate --that is the 5 and younger age would be appropriate. For most kids with any preschool background this is way too babyish for 5. Regret spending $10 on app. It should be marked as a 3-4 yr old early preschool app. If your child already has a good beginning grasp on letters even at two they might be able to use. This is not intended for those that can already read, even if only very short books.

**Developer response:** You're right that First Words Professional is primarily for the youngest kids and kids with special needs -- those who are learning their letters, letter sounds, and how letters form words. We're glad you see how well it would work for those children! We would certainly put it in a "3 or 4 and under" category if one existed, but the "5 and under" category is created by the App Store, and we don't have any way to change that. We appreciate the feedback, and will look for ways to improve the app's description next time we post an update.

### 2/5 — First Words Professional

*2015-12-26*

I truly MOSTLY enjoy this App.

I enjoy it for its breadth of word coverage and clearly enunciated words and letters. It is a 1st rate app, save for one vexing flaw.

When the narrator is individually identifying the letters he is actually saying 'd' instead of 'e' when the letter is first selected. At first I thought I was hearing it wrong but he is in fact CLEARLY saying 'D'. After the letters are correctly placed on the tiles he pronounces the 'e' correctly but i must tell you. This app is ten dollars and I am using this for my 2 year old who is by definition, quite impressionable. I DON't care to have my kid confused in such a fashion.

Thus every time i hear the announcer say 'D' instead of E, it's like someone scraping fingernails against a chalkboard. If this app were .99cents I could live with it, or at the very least not be as irritated as I am now.

I could live w/ it if I were making such a mistake on 'x' or 'w' but the 'e' is the most frequently used letter in the alphabet! Frankly, until THIS error is fixed I can't recommend this product and I will very likely call for a refund until such time as it has been corrected. When it is fixed this will literally be a perfect app but until then... It's like buying a Ferrari with one of the wheels missing. Of course it's an awesome car but, CAN YOU PLEASE FIX THIS TIRE SO THAT I CAN GET ON THE ROAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

**Developer response:** What an interesting comment! I'm sorry that you hear it this way. Millions of kids are using First Words, and you are the only person ever to report this problem. I just listened again, and it sure does sound like "E" to me. In fact, we use the same sound file for the letter names (or phonics) before and after the letters are placed on the tiles. I realize you made this comment some time ago. We are only now able to respond. We hope you were able to enjoy your use of the app and appreciate that you liked other parts of it.

### 2/5 — Graphics are a big let down

*2013-11-06*

The graphics need improving.
Considering the cost..
3rd rate graphics with poor animation.

The peas could have been anything.
Same with the "yogurt" and cake.

(USA) AMERICAN words..(bug, pants etc)
American spellings..
No option for UK spellings.

I would not recommend this app..

### 3/5 — Not bad for letter matching

*2012-10-10*

Downloaded this app to use in my classroom. Like the different categories and all of the words. Love the audio that reinforces letter names for my beginning readers. After the word has been spelled, I would like it to give the letter sound, rather than the letter name, to model sounding out the word. Would like to be able to add my own words and pictures to customize it to content vocabulary.

### 4/5 — The best phonics app I've found

*2014-01-31*

I have tried many phonics apps and this is the best one I have found. So simple, so clever.

The reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that I use the phonics option (rather than the letter names option) and the phonics option has fewer words (around 90) than the letter names opiton (over 300). I understand that not all words can be read easily using 'simple' phonics, but I just think that the description of the app should have how many phonics words were included. And since the number of words is considerably lower, perhaps they could have created a phonics only app and sold it for a fraction of the price.
