The messenger that works when everything is off. No signal. No wifi. No account, no server, no message history. Two people who can see each other, and a flashlight. FLASHBACK Type a message. The Morse appears under every word as you type, with an honest estimate of how long it will take — because it will take a while. Send it and it pulses out of the flashlight, with a click and a tap for every dit and dah. Or key it yourself on a straight key, where the length of each one is up to your thumb. RECEIVER Point the camera at anything that blinks and it tells you what that light is saying, or what it is. A flashlight across a courtyard. A lighthouse. An airport beacon. The LED on the back of a router. It works out the rhythm on its own — there is no speed to set and nothing to calibrate. WHAT IT READS • Morse, with no words-per-minute set anywhere. It measures the rhythm of whatever it is watching and keeps re-measuring, so a phone at ten words a minute and a cold hand on a Maglite both read fine. • Lighthouses. It measures the period and pattern, writes it in the notation used on charts — Fl(2) W 10s — and looks it up in a list of 432 lights. • Lights that spell. A safe-water mark flashes Morse A, over and over, forever. • Airport beacons. White and green is a civil field, white-white-green is military, white and yellow is a water aerodrome. • Blink codes. Three flashes, a pause, two flashes — counted, and named when the device is one it knows. • Tap code. The five-by-five prisoners' grid, row then column. • And a guard against nonsense: a bike strobe is labeled a regular flasher rather than translated into gibberish. LEARN IT PROPERLY There is a Morse trainer built in, and it teaches the way operators were actually taught — at full speed, by ear, from the first minute. • The Koch method. Two characters at fifteen to twenty words a minute; get ninety percent of them over a run of twenty and a third appears. Thirty-nine characters in all: the alphabet, the ten digits and three punctuation marks. • Four drills, in order. Single letters teach the shapes. Five-character groups are where the next one starts arriving while you are still deciding about the last, which is the part that stops people. Then real words and operators' shorthand. Then short runs of real traffic. • Farnsworth spacing. The characters never slow down — the silence between them is stretched instead, and you shrink it as it gets easy. • You key the answer back on the straight key. Not multiple choice. • Marked character by character, in position, with everything you missed listed afterward alongside its Morse. IT KEEPS NOTHING A message you have read fades about ten seconds later and is gone. Tap to hold it while you are still reading. There is no history, no thread, no export and no copy on a server, because there is no server. Flashback has no networking code in it at all: turn on airplane mode and nothing about it changes. The camera is the one permission it needs. Frames are read on the phone for brightness and color inside a small rectangle you position yourself, and nothing is recorded, saved or sent. Location is optional, off when you install it, and used for one thing: sixteen lights share any given rhythm on average, and your position is what turns a characteristic into a name. ONE PURCHASE No subscription, no in-app purchases, nothing to unlock, and no account to make, because there is nothing to keep. NOT A SAFETY DEVICE Flashback is a toy with a manifesto. It is not a navigational instrument and not a distress signal. Never navigate by a light it identifies, and never rely on it to carry a message that matters.
