The Good: Good integration for reading and sharing files alongside my MuseScore library, serving as a basic mobile preview tool. The Bad: The native iPad app suffers from severe interface omissions. Basic operations require frustrating workarounds—there is no direct way to duplicate a score to test draft variations, nor is there a simple option to swap an instrument part without manually adding a new staff and copy-pasting notes. Furthermore, the visual engraving quality falls short of desktop standards like MuseScore. Since Notion on iPad consistently fails to import shared MusicXML files, Flat is currently my only mobile companion for laptop score work. However, given the subscription price and missing core features, the iPad app feels unfinished. It is an innovative platform, and I hope future updates bring the iPad app up to standard so I can reconsider this rating. ### 4/5 — Drumline update?? *2026-08-27, version 26.08.01* I really like how easy it is to make drumline music using this app but to make this even better is adding a spike for the tenor drums so they can have 2 spocks, For the bass drums id really like the rims for each individual drum and also rimshots. Lastly i think maybe a “thicker” gock sound for the snares would be killer but other than that this is a really good writing app for the go ### 4/5 — Good app *2026-08-23, version 26.08.01* This is a great app but i wish that i didn't have to pay in order to make more than 15 songs. A couple days ago I was using the app to work on an arrangement and everything was as normal. Today I have went on again and have noticed that the option to transpose the notes has now been locked behind a paywall. It has literally always been free and I used it quite frequently so for them to now be charging to use the at function is absolutely ridiculous. This is one of the only good and (to an extent) free composition apps and the way they seem to be charging for everything now is frustrating. Fix the transposing bug when transposing but selecting “don’t change key signature”, nothing changes. 2. There is a Flat Power popup every day I download a pdf / audio file. I do have Flat Power. Can you remove this false pop-up? I don’t get anything added really, but it’s nice to work without worrying about space for my scores. Also, you should add a feature that can be toggled so that a score can be removed from the all scores “album” . Rated 5 Stars. ### 3/5 — Great but noticeable drawbacks *2026-07-17, version 26.06.04* Flat.io is a great space to start composing music, with lots of instruments, albeit most limited to the subscription. Every high quality instrument, synth, free reed, and some of the regular instruments are barricaded by the wall of money. If you do purchase, some of the high quality instruments still sound off. The app keeps glitching on me as well, leaving me to use the website. It’s kind of ironic considering my nickname but the nickname’s a nod to Chihiro Fujisaki. The website is significantly better with loading the instruments from my songs. It also lacks musical annotations that other apps, like Musescore, provide. Overall, it’s a good starter, but it doesn’t have everything I’m currently looking for. I need the tenor saxophone to increase it’s range BADLY. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — The transpose feature *2026-07-24, version 26.06.04* don’t understand why the transpose feature was turned into a paid Power feature when it used to be free. It was one of the most useful tools for musicians, especially students like me who rely on it to practice, learn music in different keys, or switch between instruments. Taking a feature that has always been available and suddenly locking it behind a subscription feels like a downgrade instead of an improvement. I understand that apps need ways to make money, but moving existing free features behind a paywall isn’t the best way to do it. It makes longtime users feel like they’re losing something they already had, rather than gaining new premium features. A better approach would be to keep the transpose feature free and reserve Power for brand new tools and improvements. Please consider bringing the transpose feature back for everyone. A lot of musicians, students, and longtime users depended on it, and making it free again would show that you value the community that helped support the app in the first place. ### 1/5 — Ripped off *2026-07-11, version 26.06.04* I just bought the premium version to get the lead vocal and other instruments that don’t come with the free version. Finished paying and it’s still saying I don’t have access. Did the transaction again cause I thought maybe it didn’t go through and it says “You’re already subscribed to this”. HQ Baritone horn notes are off a beat. I love the app but that’s a big issue. ### 1/5 — unpredictable *2026-05-26, version 26.05.04* I have previously used this app and didn’t like it because it was unpredictable and sometimes would not carry out the functions I had chosen . There have been upgrades so I tried it again. I was working on a score with violin and ukulele with tabs. As I was working on the ukulele tabs these suddenly became guitar tabs and I was unable to switch it back. I ended up having to re enter the ukulele stave to get ukulele tabs again. I think the unpredictability remains. ### 1/5 — Deleted my entire song *2026-05-25, version 26.05.04* I worked for 2 weeks on a diet for me and my friend when I was trying to finally finish it I left it to take a shower came back and half the song was gone while parts where out of place. Now I did try to copy parts to different measures and it has been deleting random notes so I fixed it but it looked perfect but when I reopened the app it was all messed up. I ended up deleting the song I would give 0 stars but I can't. After taking AP Music Theory all year and making compositions, I checked into my account one day to see all of my scores deleted. I found out that my school’s Flat for education account ceased and it most likely erased all my scores alongside the classroom which I made them in. I feel that I am justified in being angry at Flat for almost ruining my final grade and for erasing the work and experience I had over the year. The final nail in the coffin was when I tried to login to my personal flat account and it continuously redirecting me to flat for education. Flat’s issue with accounts and the website is frustrating and has really exasperating me. I have already tried to contact Flat, and hopefully they respond soon.
