The Spanish content is really well-developed and up there now. Can't speak for the other languages. But Spanish draws on all the movie, Pixar content, our culture, and the accents are really cool. I love the mostly clear and educated Mexican accents and videos on Mexican culture. I passed on fluentU years ago and even just a few months ago. But, now I'm in Ukraine, and wanted to reconnect with a deeper understanding of the language. It's not too bad. Gotten better at this moment with the user experience on fluentU. I just hope they keep it this way and not make any deleterious changes. ### 3/5 — Does it works on mobile phone ? *2025-11-29, version 4.2.0* I just looked at this app and at the first glance everything looks great in the web version however when I am trying to see videos on my phone app it doesn’t work and it is really frustrating. ### 2/5 — Stability issue hindering your progress *2025-10-06, version 4.1.7* I have been using the app since 2023. I like the concept but….1) If you are in China it only works with VPN. 2) The issues are acknowledged but never fixed. For example over the past 3 months I raised 6 issues which happen everyday and really slow me down in my progress. I follow up every week and I receive the same answer: “I have forwarded this to the Devs.Rest assured that your concerns ….”. So consider twice before buying. ### 2/5 — Failed to deliver *2025-10-02, version 4.1.7* I chose German Advanced which matches my competence. The format is good; using videos and quizzes. The language is current and I had no software issues. However several days and ca. 1 to 2 hours revealed errors in the German and English sentence structures, e.g. errors in punctuation of questions, or with sentences containing full stops in the middle, or with extra words in: “Here we were received with great joy and great joy” or “Because the costs are significantly higher. Than those for a combustion engine.” or “Er macht eine Ausbildung in E-Technik gemacht. “ or “and saw in my birthday here partying.” There were just too many errors to have confidence in the material. If this is AI driven the language model provider needs to up their game. ### 1/5 — Less and less video content in Quiz mode!! *2025-09-11, version 4.1.5* Why? This app keeps on getting worse instead of improving ### 1/5 — I CANCELED MY SUB AND THEY STILL CHARGED ME *2025-09-05, version 4.1.5* What more can I say? I signed up and had it for a year. Was fun but not progressing that much whatever so I canceled it and then checking my bank statement months later i see that they have charged me for a renewal. For those alone, I may continue after the free trial. There are issues though. No landscape mode on iPad. Poor playback controls. Annoying ka-ching noise and animations after every activity like some Facebook mini-game from 2010. Also, it forces you to use English and pinyin in the tests instead of 汉子. It’s too bad, because this could be amazing. But as things stand… ### 3/5 — App set up *2025-07-10, version 4.1.0* The app is really good in terms of teaching however the set up is a bit lacking. I feel that it could use more accountability so like streaks which you see on the home screen. but overall, really good experience, minor tweaks I would definitely recommend getting it. ### 2/5 — Great idea, terrible execution *2025-07-07, version 4.1.0* I’ve used FluentU for over six years to study Mandarin and can say the structure of the flashcard system is unique and in many ways better than other systems out there (and I have used many of the most popular alternatives). I really want to love this app, but sadly can confirm there are tons of quality issues that regularly show up with the app (often it seems little to no testing must have been done since some bugs are completely blocking anyone from using the functionality). These are not small nit picky issues, they are major functional issues that should not have been allowed to be released in the first place. This has been a trend for the last few years and is getting worse. It feels like the app started with a different engineering team and handed over to a much less experienced one. As soon as you reply i will make it 5 star. When you switch to Chinese subtitles extension shows English or Korean, I’ve never chosen to learn Korean. In the App account, when you pick Chinese it teaches you Japanese instead, I’ve never chosen to learn Japanese. I even forced a switch to Chinese in the website url and still ended up Japanese. Pinyin annotate is a free extension and works all the time. While this won’t ### 1/5 — Frustrating *2026-08-13, version 4.3.8* This service is quite frustrating, I paid for a year of the plus service and it could be a great service for language learning but there are definitely problems that I feel can hinder one’s progress, the quizzes are way too long, for a 4 minute video the quiz is taking me well over an hour, I would skip the quizzes altogether except it appears to be the only way to mark a video as completed. And for this particular 4 minute video, the quiz finally ran out of questions and the video is still showing as incomplete, so I wasted over an hour fooling around with this quiz just to get the video completed and it still won’t mark it completed. I need the videos I watched already marked as complete so I can move on to other videos and feel like I am making some kind of progress. This service is way too expensive to be having these kinds of problems, completely defeats the purpose of it being a learning platform when I can’t even mark videos complete. Also it would be nice if there was a shuffle button so you can get a random video to watch and not have to go through hundreds of videos as this can be overwhelming. I have to request a refund from Apple now. It just charged me $200.. what a rip off ### 1/5 — You will not get anything they advertise *2026-06-30, version 4.3.5* I got this a couple of years ago and had really high hopes. It worked for a while and I really liked the videos they had. But they advertise everywhere that you can upload any video/movie/podcast and will be able to study with it. But, when you are in the app, their FAQ says that you are only able to use their selections. It constantly has bugs, and when you try to talk to customer support, you will only get a bot (and sometimes not even that.) During the 2-ish years I had the app (holding out hope for things to get resolved) I was unable to even access my account for about 6 months, and they never gave me a refund or even acknowledged it again. The flash cards are constantly wrong, so if you don’t have a foundational knowledge in your target language, you will get the wrong information. They also say that you will get speaking practice with the app, but I have only been able to use that feature once or twice in the time I’ve had the app. And that isn’t even counting the weird AI updates they’ve started forcing on users and cause even more bugs and glitches. ### 1/5 — This sucks *2026-04-16, version 4.2.9* You have to subscribe to get into the app an you have to do the 2 week trial and I can't do that so I just can't have the damn app, you leave no choice and force people to do a 2 week trial by I'm unable to even subscribe to apps so I just can't have this a all! ### 1/5 — I can’t subscribe *2025-12-24, version 4.2.1* I don’t have the money there should be free features there ### 1/5 — App not working *2025-10-30, version 4.1.8* It’s been over a week now and this app is still not working. The clips are moving so quickly that the beginning of each clip is truncated. Additionally like all language learning programs they expect you to be literate right away. The western alphabet is used differently from language to language. Teaching people to read and write before they can understand leads to poor pronunciation.
