## What is FluidNotes?

FluidNotes is a notebook for iPad and iPhone that feels like paper: write with Apple Pencil on iPad or with your finger on iPhone – and find everything again with search that reads your handwriting.

WRITING THAT FEELS RIGHT
• Ballpoint, fineliner, fountain pen, pencil, felt-tip, watercolour, highlighter and more, all pressure-sensitive
• Ruler, colour picker and custom colours on all your devices
• Hand-drawn shapes become clean circles, rectangles, lines and arrows
• Convert handwriting to typed text, with word suggestions as you write – on the device
• Cross out typed words to delete them
• Lasso: cut out exactly, colour, move, duplicate
• Zoom window: write large at the bottom, and it appears small on the page

ORGANISATION THAT GROWS WITH YOU
• Folders and subfolders, tags, favourites and bookmarks
• Headings automatically build an outline; links connect pages and notebooks, and a knowledge network shows topics and connections – in 3D too
• Search handwriting, typed text, PDFs, photos and recordings – through Spotlight too
• Collect the highlights of a PDF into an excerpt, with links back to the passage
• Lock notebooks with Face ID or a passcode

THE PAPER YOU WANT
• Lined, squared, dotted, planners, sheet music and more – in colour too; plus a whiteboard that grows
• Save your own pages as templates; import PDFs, Word, PowerPoint and Goodnotes
• Photos, document scans, GIFs, tables, mind maps and reusable building blocks

STUDY
• Flashcards with spaced repetition and a study plan across all notebooks, with a daily reminder if you like
• An exam date per deck, also as a proposal to the group; import and export decks as Anki packages or text files
• Flashcards from your handwriting: circle a question or sketch and turn it into a card
• Apple Watch: review due flashcards on your wrist, with a complication for the watch face
• Study time with breaks, on iPhone also on the Lock Screen
• Study tape: cover passages and test yourself
• With Apple Intelligence: flashcards, cloze exercises from A1 to C2, summaries and mind maps from your notes – and answers to questions about them
• The AI runs on the device only – no internet, no third-party AI service

STUDY GROUPS AND SHARING
• Study groups: join once and get every notebook of the group, including later ones
• Invite others to a notebook with a link or QR code – to write along or just to view
• Colour each person’s contributions and see what others have changed since your last visit
• Send a copy of a notebook or of single pages, with the recordings if you like – through a link that expires by itself
• Comments with replies; everyone shares the flashcards, each person keeps their own progress

RECORD AND PRESENT
• Record sound while you write; on playback, your note reappears stroke by stroke
• Transcripts on the device: search finds spoken words too
• Present on a projector or TV: only the current page, with a laser pointer

HANDY
• Quick Note from the app icon, as a widget, in Control Centre, with Siri or Shortcuts
• Widgets for recently opened notebooks and cards due
• Sync through your own iCloud and Handoff between iPhone, iPad and Mac
• Automatic backups to iCloud Drive; export as PDF, Markdown or FlexiNote package
• Select text in a PDF and translate it
• Optional: Zotero for PDFs, citations and the bibliography
• Getting started in five short exercises; help mode explains every button

YOUR NOTES BELONG TO YOU
FluidNotes has no server of its own and no account. No ads, no tracking, no analytics, no in-app purchases. Your notebooks live on your device and, if you like, in your own iCloud.

FluidNotes is a personal project, built with care. Questions and ideas: j.gomez@web.de

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.1 — 2026-10-21

Study with focus, grab PDF text with the lasso and enjoy a tidier toolbar.

• Study Focus: set your study time on a dial and watch it shrink. While it runs, notifications, tips and hints stay quiet, the status bar and tabs step back, and the screen stays on. In full screen, the dial stands large like a clock on your desk. Strict if you like: no pausing, or locked to the open notebook
• System Focus: with the FlexiNotes Focus filter, study time starts as soon as you turn on a Focus such as ‘Study’ – plus a Control Centre button and Shortcuts
• Lasso on PDF text: copy circled text, highlight it, cover it with Study Tape, turn it into a flashcard, translate it or have it explained
• Bookmarks: the library now shows the marked pages themselves – grouped by notebook, as thumbnails or a list; a tap opens the page
• Tidier toolbar: collapsible, can hide while you write and can be arranged to your liking in Settings
• Colour wheel: pick your own colours on a colour wheel
• Ruler: it stays put when you switch pens or rotate the iPad

‘Explain’ uses Apple Intelligence.

### 3.0 — 2026-10-19

The biggest version yet: the knowledge network shows what your notebooks are about, the on-device AI answers questions about your notes, and Goodnotes, Word and PowerPoint come along.

• Knowledge Network: topics as guiding stars, related notebooks as galaxies and, for each topic, a constellation reaching every page it appears on. In 3D to turn around if you like, with a globe for orientation, and in full screen – smooth even with large libraries
• Ask Your Notes: the on-device AI answers questions from a notebook or your whole library and names the pages it relies on
• Goodnotes import (beta): .goodnotes files become notebooks with editable handwriting, PDFs, images, text boxes, shapes and bookmarks – several at once, whole folders or as a ZIP
• Word and PowerPoint: documents and presentations become pages with searchable text
• Word Completion: while you write by hand, up to three suggestions appear; one tap sets the whole word as text. Switch it on by pressing and holding a pen
• Tabs: on iPad, open notebooks stand as tabs at the top – to switch, close and reorder
• Highlighter on PDF text: when lifted, the stroke settles exactly on the words it covered; strokes can be straightened if you like
• Images above handwriting: bring an image above the writing with the lasso, or send it back behind
• Outline with subsections: suggestions with indented sub-points, adjustable before you apply them
• Ruler: a stroke along the ruler lies on its edge while you draw
• Drag across: drag images, text boxes or whole pages from a notebook opened alongside and from tabletop mode onto the page

Ask Your Notes and the galaxy names use Apple Intelligence. Apple Watch requires watchOS 11 or later.

### 2.9 — 2026-10-18

A whiteboard without page edges, a study timer on the Lock Screen and a network of your connections.

• Whiteboard: under ‘Insert Page’ – a surface with no fixed size that grows to the right and downwards as you draw
• Study Time: a timer with breaks in the study plan, the page menu and while studying. On iPhone it keeps running on the Lock Screen, in the Dynamic Island and in the Smart Stack of Apple Watch; the minutes count towards your streak
• Connections: all linked pages as a network, grouped by notebook. ‘Linked From …’ in the page menu shows which pages point to the current one
• Tasks: a box drawn in front of a line makes it a task; the library collects them all under ‘Tasks’
• Page History: look at earlier versions of a page and bring one back – in place or as a new page
• Read aloud: flashcards, cloze exercises and pages in their own language, automatically while studying if you like
• Export as Markdown: a notebook with recognised handwriting, text, tables and images – for Obsidian, for example
• Formulas as LaTeX: select a handwritten formula with the lasso and copy it as LaTeX
• Straight lines: rest the pencil for a moment at the end of a stroke – the line becomes straight
• Smoother: writing with pencil, chalk and airbrush and erasing stay fast even on full pages, and new pages appear without delay
• Fixed: on iPhone Duo, two pages now really lie side by side when unfolded, as in a notebook – in 2.8 this was not yet active

Apple Watch requires watchOS 11 or later.

### 2.8 — 2026-10-14

Flashcards from your handwriting, a lasso that cuts exactly, and iPhone Duo.

• Drawn flashcards: circle a question, formula or sketch and choose ‘As Flashcard’ – it becomes the front or back, just as you wrote it
• Draw cards directly: each side of a card can be drawn with pencil or finger, in four colours and with an eraser
• Edit cards: tap a card to change its text and drawing – your study progress stays
• Apple Watch: drawn cards appear on your wrist too, and the study reminder takes you straight into a session with ‘Study now’
• Lasso: it now takes exactly what you circle and splits strokes to do so. Touch and hold to choose between ‘Exact’, ‘Whole Strokes’ and ‘Everything Touched’
• iPhone Duo: unfolded, two pages lie side by side as in a notebook
• Anki: exported packages carry drawn cards as images
• Fixed: the library keeps its columns when you return from a notebook

Apple Watch requires watchOS 11 or later.

### 2.7 — 2026-10-13

Flashcards on Apple Watch, a page indicator and Polish.

• Apple Watch: review due flashcards on your wrist – tap, flip, rate. Your ratings reach the iPhone and, through iCloud, all your devices
• Complication for the watch face: it shows how many cards are due
• Page indicator: while paging you briefly see where you are in the notebook – tap it to open the page overview
• More flashcards from long texts: the number of suggested cards now grows with the length of the text
• A glossary becomes flashcards: terms and their explanations are taken over word for word
• New language: Polish

Suggesting flashcards from notes requires a device with Apple Intelligence; processing stays on the device.
Apple Watch requires watchOS 11 or later.
