## What is Flybound?

Where can I fly today?

Pick a leave time. Flybound draws wind-shaped range rings around your home airport and scores every reachable field GO, CAUTION or NO-GO — from live weather, your aircraft's numbers, daylight, fuel and your own personal minimums.

Then it does the part a raw briefing never does: it tells you what would change the answer.

IT TELLS YOU WHY — AND WHAT WOULD FIX IT

Every CAUTION and NO-GO carries the number: "GO if the ceiling lifts 400 ft." "GO if you leave by 2:15 PM." "GO if it cools 6 °C — try early morning." Ceiling and visibility carry trend arrows with the rate behind them, so a 1,200 ft ceiling that is lifting reads differently from one that is dropping. Put the two together and you get the time to look again: "on this trend, around 2:40 PM."

And when nothing will clear it, it says so, and names what is still in the way.

YOUR MINIMUMS, NOT SOMEBODY ELSE'S

Ceiling, visibility, surface wind, gusts, crosswind, density altitude, runway length, fuel on the field, and your own night policy. Set them once; every field on the map is judged against them.

THE WHOLE DAY, NOT JUST THE DEPARTURE

- Weather along the route at the time you will actually cross it, not only at the ends.
- The forecast at your arrival, and again for the ride home.
- Last light, and the be-home-by deadline that follows from it, with night-currency cues.
- A fuel-stop planner that sizes the stop and lands it near the true midpoint.
- Round-trip or one-way scoring.
- An expected-ride estimate — Smooth, A few bumps, Bumpy or Rough — for the passenger who always asks.

ALTITUDE

Trips are planned at the altitude you actually fly, rounded to the legal VFR altitude for the direction, with the climb modelled properly rather than buried in a flat fuel pad. Pro adds a cruise-altitude card: the wind triangle solved at every legal level your aircraft can reach, out and back separately, each level paying for its own climb.

ONCE YOU'RE ON THE GROUND

Runways with wind components, frequencies, airspace class, fuel — and things worth walking to, because the point of a day trip is the day, not the flight.

KEEP TRACK

A Wheels Down log of everywhere you have been, with CSV export. Morning and afternoon scout alerts for the fields you care about. A home-screen widget.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.8 — 2026-10-02

ALTITUDE — AND A WAY TO TELL FLYBOUND IT'S WRONG

Flybound used to plan every trip at 6,000 ft, whatever you actually fly. Now it plans at your altitude, in each direction, tells you when a different one is worth the climb — and lets you take a field out of the decision when you know better than the data.

YOUR CRUISE ALTITUDE, EACH WAY

- New: Usual cruise altitude, per aircraft. Every trip is planned from the altitude you actually fly, rounded to the legal VFR altitude for the direction — so "8,500" westbound becomes 7,500 eastbound.
- The return leg is planned as its own flight: its own hemispherical altitude, with the wind sampled up there instead of borrowed from the way out. The brief shows course, altitude, groundspeed and ETE for each leg.
- New: your aircraft's cruise rows and the winds aloft forecast both interpolate. At 7,500 — exactly between the 6,000 and 9,000 forecasts — the app used to quietly use the 6,000 one. Same at 4,500 and 10,500.

THE CLIMB IS NOW REAL

- New, per aircraft: best rate of climb at Vy, and fuel flow in the climb. Trip times and fuel now include the climb instead of burying it in a flat pad — and it falls off with altitude, so the last 2,000 ft cost the most.
- The aircraft fuel pad is now Taxi & descent pad. If you had set it generously to cover the climb, it can come down.

Please note: your trip times and fuel figures will move with this release, and the two legs of a round trip will now differ. They are closer to what you'll actually see.

THE RIGHT ALTITUDE FOR THIS TRIP (PRO)

- New: in the destination brief, the wind triangle solved at every legal cruising altitude your aircraft can reach — out and back separately, with time and fuel for each. "8,500 ft · about 14 min faster round-trip". A headwind one way is a tailwind the other.
- It works from the winds aloft forecast at each level and your own cruise rows, so the saving is your airplane's — and every altitude pays for its own climb, in minutes and gallons.
- Short hops stay low: on a 60 nm leg there's nothing left to cruise at after the climb and descent, so the high altitudes aren't offered.
- Long legs get sent up, with the reason stated: three hours out, a tailwind two levels higher can be worth more than the fuel to reach it, and Flybound says how much — in minutes saved and gallons burned.
- In between, it leaves you where you are. When nothing beats the altitude you already fly by more than the forecast's own margin, it says your plan is fine, and it won't talk you down to 3,500 to save a minute.
- New: a Best altitude switch beside the winds override, off by default.

This is a winds answer, not an MEA. Flybound has no terrain data.

DISREGARD AN AIRPORT — WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THE DATA

Some fields you will never use: a ramp fee, a short or soft runway, a standing NOTAM, no fuel at the weekend, or an AWOS reporting weather nobody around it is flying in. Now you can say so once.

- New: at the bottom of any airport's page, a switch that leaves that field out of every decision — as a destination, as en-route weather on OTHER routes, as the weather source its neighbours borrow, and as a fuel stop. Add a note so you remember why.
- That second one is the point. The en-route check takes the worst reporting station near your course, so one field with a stuck sensor can turn every route past it amber. Those stations often have no dot on the map, so you can disregard one straight from the "En-route MVFR near KXYZ" line in the brief.
- Your home base cannot be disregarded, and changing aircraft to one based at a disregarded field clears it.
- Settings → Disregarded airports lists everything you have set aside and undoes any of it. The list syncs over iCloud with your Wheels Down log and rides the same CSV export and import.

ALSO: the distance rings now start at 1 hour instead of 2, and the route line carries airborne time and round-trip distance.

### 1.0.7 — 2026-09-29

WHAT THE WEATHER IS ABOUT TO DO

A METAR tells you what the weather is right now. This release tells you where it is going — and what would change your mind.

GO IF…

Every CAUTION and NO now tells you what would clear it, with the number attached:

- "GO if the ceiling lifts 400 ft"
- "GO if the wind eases 3 kt"
- "GO if you leave by 2:15 PM"
- "GO if it cools 6 °C — try early morning"
- "GO if you're home by 4:00 PM"

It appears on the verdict banner, on each reason, on your airport list, and on the plan card you share. A field that used to be a dead end is now a decision.

TREND ARROWS

Ceiling and visibility now carry an arrow — improving, steady or deteriorating — with the rate behind it, like "ceiling lifting 400 ft/hr". A 1,200 ft ceiling that is lifting is a completely different day from a 1,200 ft ceiling that is dropping, and until now the app showed you the same number for both.

And when a ceiling is below your personal minimum but climbing toward it, the two combine: "GO if the ceiling lifts 400 ft — on this trend, around 2:40 PM." Now you know when to look again.

EXPECTED RIDE

The question your passenger actually asks. One word — Smooth, A few bumps, Bumpy or Rough — worked out from surface gustiness, the wind shear between the ground and your cruise altitude, and how likely the afternoon is to be thermal, with the reasons spelled out underneath. It is a comfort estimate, not a turbulence forecast, and it never changes the go/no-go verdict.

AIRSPACE

- New: Avoid Class B and Avoid Class C filters. Separate switches that work together, so you can plan a day that stays clear of the busy airspace entirely.
- New: airspace class on the airports list, in the destination brief, and on the shared plan card.
- Class comes straight from the current FAA NASR cycle, for every field that has one — around 900 airports. Fields the FAA publishes no class for are never guessed at, and never hidden by the filters.
- New: your Wheels Down export now carries an Airspace column.

AIRPORT DATA

Corrections no longer have to wait for the next 28-day FAA cycle. A fixed database now reaches you as a data revision in between — Settings → Airport data shows which one you are on.

As always: Flybound is a planning aid, not for navigation. Verify frequencies, airspace, runways, fuel and NOTAMs against current official sources before you fly.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-09-15
