## What is Foggy?

Foggy is a new kind of weather app for people curious about fog in California’s San Francisco Bay Area. Built with the local community in mind by a small team focused on making a high quality experience, this app combines satellite imagery, detailed maps and community reporting to help Bay Area locals and visitors alike be more fog aware.

Foggy’s map covers the SF Bay Area of California, inclusive of Point Reyes, Santa Cruz, San Francisco’s Ocean Beach and communities in the East Bay. Because the region’s fog and people share a unique relationship and are always in motion.

See real-time fog updates and track the fog visually across the Bay Area.

– See the fog in your area and around the Bay: Views of the Bay Area from above, with satellite images updated every 5 minutes.
– View the fog rolling in and out: 2 hour and 24 hour playback loop options to let you see the fog evolving and changing over time.
– Understand fog and cloud distinction: Fog and cloud statuses from our proprietary model of satellite imagery and, ocean data help you distinguish between cooling cloud cover and a wet blanket of fog

Report fog conditions in your area anonymously, and view other recent community reports shared from across the Bay Area’s neighborhoods.

– Get a fuller picture of the local fog: Community reporting gives you the power to share your on-the-ground experience with the Foggy community and understand the fog others see in their areas
– Keep a personal logbook: When you share your fog report with the community, you build your personal logbook of your experiences with San Francisco’s fog. You’ll be able to look back on all your reports or delete them.

We don’t sell your data. Privacy is a core pillar of our design.

– No accounts: When you sign up for Foggy the app installs and assigns a random install ID that links your sessions using the app without identifying you to other users or to us.
– No data sharing: We will never sell or share your data or personal information.
– No ads: See the fog and without ads.
– No personal identifiable information: Users can use the full experience without ever providing any personal information.
– Fog reports are anonymous and their location is approximate: what the community sees is just the report, not who reported it or exactly where it was reported
– Your exact location is never saved or shown to others: Enabling location services is totally optional, and Foggy only sees an approximate location when you submit a report to identify your neighborhood. This way, you can see fog reports in your area, while protecting community members’ privacy.
– Our business model is in support of your privacy: we charge you a small download fee to cover the cost of providing Foggy to you instead of selling your attention or data to advertisers.

Foggy is built and supported by humans. Your feedback is important and will always be answered by a real person, not a bot.

Whether you live in the foggier outer avenues of San Francisco or the sunnier East Bay, Foggy is your companion to understand fog’s real-time conditions and movements so you can be more fog-aware wherever you choose to spend your day and so you always bring the right layers.

I love using Foggy to plan hikes and day trips around the Bay Area! I can always find where to get the most scenic views and have the best possible experience on my outdoor adventures. It’s very helpful to check conditions in different microclimates and watch the movement of clouds and fog. Living by the coast, I really appreciate having this tool to help me track (and sometimes escape) the marine layer!

### 5/5 — The Best at Bay Area fog.

*2026-07-06*

I have been forecasting wind in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years. And wind and fog are tied together in the summer. This app shows the details of the fog better than any private or government web site or app. Moreover it allows you to zoom in, see topographic lines and move forwards and backwards in time. I use this app to illustrate wind often on my Facebook S. F. weather page!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.1.0 — 2026-09-02

Neighborhood names are complicated; people know where they live in ways maps don't always capture, and we're still learning how to name areas in a way that's useful to you.

This update is a small step: when you submit a report, you'll see a few nearby neighborhood options to pick from. Choose what fits, or tell us none do. Either way, you're helping us get this more accurate over time.

### 4.0.0 — 2026-09-01

Neighborhood names are complicated; people know where they live in ways maps don't always capture, and we're still learning how to name areas in a way that's useful to you.

This update is a small step: when you submit a report, you'll see a few nearby neighborhood options to pick from. Choose what fits, or tell us none do. Either way, you're helping us get this more accurate over time.

### 3.1.0 — 2026-08-12

Nothing dramatic in this update: just a few fixes to keep things running clear. We're always tracking what's next. Thank you for being part of this.

### 3.0.0 — 2026-08-06

A Mini Drawer option: drag the handle down to give yourself more space to focus on the satellite view of the map. Playback controls and timestamps stay useable. Drag back up anytime for the full drawer with community report details. And we made a handful of small fixes and improvements as well.

### 2.0.0 — 2026-07-09

We've been listening to what you've been telling us… here's what we worked through this round:

- The map now gives more room to areas like Point Reyes up top, Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay down south. These start showing up the week of the 6th, though it may take a little while to fully propagate.
- Community reports now refresh more smoothly as you pan around the map.
- When satellite imagery isn't coming through, we will tell you… instead of just sitting there blank.
- Plus some smaller fixes and polish along the way.

Update now to get the taller map as it rolls out.
