## What is FogMap?

FogMap turns the real world into your private fog-of-war map.

The idea for FogMap came from a simple need: I wanted an app that would show the areas I had uncovered on a map. I did not want my location data sent to outside servers, I did not want ads, social features, leaderboards, or achievement-style rewards, and I did not want another monthly subscription.

So I started building the kind of app I wanted to use myself: a simple, private exploration map that focuses on the map itself.

Move through the world and reveal the map tile by tile. Tiles you have uncovered remain visible, while the rest of the map stays covered in fog.

FogMap is built for simple, private exploration. There are no accounts, ads, social feeds, leaderboards, or server-side location tracking. Your exploration data stays on your device.

Rather than points or achievements, FogMap focuses on a grid that shows the areas you have uncovered over time.

Features:
• Reveal the world as you walk, drive, travel, and move through your everyday surroundings.
• Mark places that matter with notes - add one at your current location or by long-pressing the map, then browse and search them all from the tools drawer.
• Start a reveal session on a fresh map to capture a single trip, hike, or day. Save it to your Archive and revisit it anytime, while your main map keeps filling in underneath.
• Keep everything on your device, with no account required.
• Use FogMap without a monthly subscription.
• Choose a base cell size to make your map finer or broader.
• Tune how map detail adapts as you zoom out, from the point where cells begin to combine to the coarsest view FogMap can show.
• Battery-conscious background tracking automatically enters a low-power idle mode when you stay in one place.
• Export and import your map data with the optional one-time Full unlock.

FogMap is for anyone who wants to see where they have been - without turning location history into someone else's data.

Happy exploring!

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-28

Better tracking in weak signal

Trips where the signal drops in and out - trains, ferries, tunnels, remote
stretches - should now record more of the route. Weak GPS is still weak GPS, but
FogMap gives up much less easily.

Settings, tidied up

The fine-grained controls now live behind Advanced, right under Background
tracking. Nothing was removed and none of your settings changed - base cell size,
gap filling and render detail simply moved one level deeper.

New in the Full version

"Stay ready to track" (Settings > Advanced > Experimental) lets FogMap watch for
movement itself instead of waiting for iOS to wake it, which helps on long trips
where a wake-up arrives late or never. It stays off unless you turn it on, and it increases battery usage.

And a new app icon.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-07-18

• New Support option in Settings - an easy way to reach us with support questions, feedback, or new ideas for the app.
• Saved sessions in the Archive now list the area you revealed in square kilometers or square miles.
• Small refinements throughout to the new features and changes from 1.1.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-07-16

New in FogMap 1.1
• Notes - Mark any place on your map with a note. Add one at your
location or by long-pressing the map, then browse and search all your
  notes from the tools drawer.
• Reveal sessions & Archive - Start a temporary reveal on a fresh map to
track a single trip. Save it when you're done and revisit it anytime
from the Archive - your main map keeps filling in underneath the whole
  time.
• Redesigned bottom bar - Tracking, session, and locate now live in one
clean bottom bar. Swipe up or tap the handle to open a tools drawer for
  Notes, Archive, Display, and Settings.
• Smoother map - Optimized map rendering for smoother panning and zooming.
• A more polished look - Refined Liquid Glass chrome.
