## What is Foil Sessions?

Built by a foiler, refined by the community, heavy on froth, light on corporate nonsense. Foil Sessions tracks what actually matters on the water. Wing foil, prone foil, dock starts, beach starts, paddle ups, tow boogie, downwind runs, parawing, kite foil, wind foil, wake foil and even e‑foil. If it flies, we probably track it.

The interface is built to make you smile twice: once on the water, and again on the couch when you relive your sessions in glorious color‑coded detail. Algorithms fine‑tuned for foiling help you see your progress, celebrate wins, and laugh at wipeouts.

Foil Sessions currently tracks tacks, jibes, and even which tack you’re on. Success rates give you tangible numbers to measure improvement. For downwinders and parawing, each swell run is saved with key stats—rides, distance, average speed—so you can analyze the session back on shore. Dock starts, paddle ups, and beach starts? Covered, with distance, duration, and heart rate right on your wrist. And for the purists: prone surf is supported too, every wave is counted, timed, and measured—linked into sets so you can battle yourself for longest consecutive run.

When you’re miles offshore chasing bumps, the watch app keeps you on track with a clear arrow pointing straight toward your destination. Pair it with waterproof headphones and you’ll get gentle voice nudges too — distance to go, heading, and how far you’ve drifted off line.

Your sessions don’t have to stay local. You can export directly to Strava with a single tap and share your runs with friends, clubs, and the wider foiling community.

Sharing doesn’t stop at Strava. You can turn your sessions into clean, high-resolution images or short animations showing your track, stats, and replay. Perfect for Instagram, Messages, or anywhere else you want to show what actually went down.

GPX export & import: Whether you’re chasing bragging rights or jumping ecosystems, GPX is now first-class. Export sessions to online leaderboards or share tracks with friends. Import GPX files from Garmin watches, other devices, and pretty much any app that can spit out a track.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
• Session Notes – Capture key details and reflections for every session.
• Automatic Weather Data – Get wind and buoy readings automatically logged.
• Replay mode animating the entire session.
• Photo View – See all photos taken during your sessions in one place.
• Support for imperial, metric, or nautical units.

All your data is securely stored in Apple's Health app, contributing to your daily fitness goals and activity rings in the Fitness app. I've worked in security before, and your privacy is my top priority. No user tracking, no analytics, no ads — zilch, zip, nada. Nothing leaves the app unless you press share. How you use the app is your business, not mine.

### 5/5 — Sweet!

*2025-12-22*

Amazing app for dock start & pumping! I’ve been using Strava but this is exactly what I was looking for when using my watch to record my sessions. If I could make a wish it would be to have a worldwide standings on daily sessions for pumping. Like a leaderboard which would help motivate us to push our sessions to the max. Thank you for making a foiling specific app!

### 5/5 — Just lovely

*2025-11-11*

Foil sessions is already great, and keeps getting better with every update. The dev is super responsive and always open to ideas for improvements. It’s replaced dawn patrol as my goto app for tracking prone and downwind runs and nerding out on all the stats afterwards.

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for this. Makes my day. I’m really glad it’s become your go-to and happy to keep polishing things as we go. If you ever spot something that could be better, just shout.
Cheers, Jens

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2026.10 — 2026-08-13

• Downwind ride detection, rebuilt from scratch. This release contains the seed of an updated downwind ride detection algorithm. It's built on the same foundation as pump detection, fusing GPS, pump, and motion data from your watch. The new version should already work better for most riders, but some might notice worse results. If you're one of them, enable Capture Motion Data on your watch, go for a ride, and share the session with me. It'll help me tune the algorithm to your style of riding. Thanks, Angus, Jesper, and @mattonfoil for contributing tuning data!

• If saving a session on your watch fails, the iPhone app will now recalculate some of the numbers that would otherwise be missing. Thanks, Carter!

• Scroll mode in the map view now has a few hints, making it easier to discover and use for the first time. The infuriating issue where it switched back to overview mode when you missed the stepper button is also fixed. Thanks, Angus!

• A few bugs affecting the custom stats editor slipped through testing. The editor should behave much better now.

• The discard recording alert when ending a session will now only show up if you've been recording for less than one minute. Thanks, Guillaume!

### 2026.9 — 2026-07-26

• Pump detection. Your Apple Watch can now tell the difference between pumping and gliding. See pump cadence, pump counts, and pump/glide time throughout the app. This is just the start of a community effort, and there’s plenty of tuning left to do. Want to help? Start by enabling Capture Pump Data on your Apple Watch. Thanks to the pump-detection test crew so far: Angus, @mattonfoil & @benswarty!

• Choose your stats. Long-press session details, map overlays, and share screens to choose which data fields are shown. Each discipline remembers its own layout.

• Video Overlay now has a top-aligned layout, perfect when you're near the bottom of the frame and all that empty sky is begging for some stats

• Splash markers. The places where you went swimming are now marked on the map. Under the hood, water submersion detection helps the app tell the difference between foiling and swimming, improving everything from dock starts to ride analysis. Thanks Angus!*

• Record water temperature for your sessions and tap the temperature label to switch between water and air temperature.*

• Dock start rest timer. Track recovery between attempts with a rest timer and heart rate recovery chart. Thanks Angus!

• The session list now include a miniature map of your track. Thanks Angus!

• Fixed a rare bug that could give videos with overlays a strange aspect ratio.

• Tracks now replay more smoothly on the map. Thanks Stefan!

• Lowered the on-foil speed threshold for parawing up/downwinders. This solves an issue where the app could miss some upwind runs. Thanks Angus!

• Your watch’s battery level is now shown while recording. Green when you’re good, yellow when it’s getting low, and red when it’s nearly empty. Thanks again, Angus!

• Heart Rate Zone callouts are now optional. Turn them on or off from the Apple Watch settings. Thanks, Martin!

* Requires Apple Watch Ultra or Series 10 and newer

### 2026.8 — 2026-06-03

• This one’s mostly under the hood and almost entirely about the thrilling subject of logging. The app now captures far more detail when something goes sideways, making Send Feedback and Share Debug Track much more useful.

• The Freefoil Summit 2026 badges are dialed in for the event this weekend (June 5–7). If you're there, go earn them.

• GPX import type selector now remembers your last choice. Thanks, Angus!

• Fixed a bug where the final downwind ride could be missed if the session ended before you’d slowed down. Thanks, Angus!

• Fixed a crash that could happen when deleting multiple sessions in quick succession.

### 2026.7 — 2026-05-17

• Badges are here. Earn them for everything from early mornings to questionable decisions. Got a spot or a badge idea? Let me know at hello@svartkobb.se.

• Tacks and jibes are now annotated on the map, along with extra data. G-force is approximated, but generally holds up well. Tacks and jibes detection has been rewritten from scratch. It should be much more accurate, but expect some older numbers to change.

• Weather, notes and other session data now sync more reliably between devices.

• Fixes some issues with custom location names. Thanks, @mattonfoil!

• Improved retry logic and logging when ending sessions on Apple Watch. Thanks Ben & @mattonfoil!

• Fixes a bug where the app would hang in the season stats view. Thanks, Nick!

• One last tiny improvement: the wind direction arrow now rotates with the map.

### 2026.6 — 2026-04-02

• Season stats! Sessions, tacks, waves, success rates — your season, properly broken down. The new stats view is finally here.

• You can now rename spots. All past and future sessions at the same location will use the new name.

• User video sharing was great for single moments like dock starts or waves. Now it handles full sessions too. Use Synced for real-time clips, or Range to squeeze a longer part of your session into your video. Thanks, @mattonfoil!

• Trimming sessions can be a bit tricky. This version improves the user experience and fixes a few bugs related to the feature.

• There’s now a setting for those convinced the wind arrow should point into the wind. This appears to split the world in two. Thanks, Anders!

• Some data got mixed up when sharing a session. That should now be sorted. Thanks, Brendan, for catching it!

• Some users were told they’d run out of free recordings, despite being subscribed. That should now be sorted. Thanks, Kris and Anders!

• Also fixes a crash on the Apple Watch that could happen when debug logging was enabled. Thanks for helping out and being patient, Ben!
