## What is FoldNotes?

Some notes are short. Others grow into chapters, plans and running logs you scroll past a hundred times. FoldNotes lets you fold the finished parts away, so a long note stays as small as the part you are actually working on.

Every note is a plain Markdown file. No database, no proprietary format, no export step. Your notes sit in iCloud Drive or on your device, and any other app can open them, today or in ten years.

It is also a real iOS app, written in Swift. Not a web page in a wrapper. It opens instantly, works offline, handles a hardware keyboard properly, and does not sit in the background eating your battery.

FOLD ANYTHING
• Collapse any heading or list item and everything beneath it folds away
• Hoist a section to work on it alone, with everything else out of sight
• Task counts stay on the folded heading, so you can see what is left without unfolding

WRITTEN FOR MARKDOWN
• Live styling as you type — headings, lists, quotes, code, links
• Six heading levels, and GFM tables with a real table editor
• Code blocks with syntax highlighting
• Wiki-links [[like this]], with previews and automatic backlinks
• Nested tags

TASKS WHERE YOU WROTE THEM
• Four states: to do, in progress, done and cancelled
• Due dates and priorities written inline, in plain text
• Assign them to a project and add context and comments
• Counts roll up to the section above them

BUILT FOR IPAD
• Library, notes and editor side by side
• Hardware keyboard shortcuts throughout
• An inspector with outline, tasks, references, properties and a note graph
• Scan printed text straight into a note with the camera

FIND ANYTHING
• Search every note, including regular expressions
• Saved queries and database views across your whole collection
• Daily notes with a calendar

COMING FROM ANOTHER APP
• Import from Bear or Obsidian in a tap
• Or simply point FoldNotes at the Markdown files you already have

MAKE IT YOURS
• Light and dark themes, including Nord, Dracula and Catppuccin
• Choose your body, heading and code fonts
• Paragraph focus, sentence focus and typewriter scrolling

Folding is not a formatting trick. A long document asks you to hold every section in your head at once; folding lets you put the finished ones down. That is the whole idea, and everything else here is built around it.

Your notes will outlive this app, and every app like it. That is rather the point.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.4 — 2026-09-25

Graph, database view and menu fixes

• See a note's name in the graph without zooming in. Point at a note with a trackpad, mouse or Apple Pencil, or hold it with your finger, and its title and number of links appear beside it. Long titles wrap and stay inside the graph.

• Fixed — on iPad, Back forgot where you came from after following the graph or a backlink. Open a note, and without tapping into it follow a note in its graph or backlinks: Back had nowhere to go. Following a link from a note's graph or backlinks now counts as using that note, so Back takes you to it.

• Fixed — a database view's Days Until Due column counted the wrong task, and a day short. In a view that picks notes by their tasks — "due this week", say — the column reported the note's earliest unfinished task, even an overdue one the view never asked about. It now counts only the tasks the view's task rules match, and counts whole calendar days: a task due tomorrow used to read "Today".

• Fixed — iPad showed two Help menus in the menu bar. FoldNotes' Documentation, Release Notes, Website, Contact Support and Newsletter items are now in the one Help menu.

### 1.3.3 — 2026-09-22

**iOS 1.3.3**

Shortcuts and Siri without opening FoldNotes

• Shortcuts, Siri and Spotlight no longer need to open FoldNotes. Today's Tasks, Overdue Tasks, Add Task, Create Note, Search Notes, Append to Daily Note and the rest now do their work in the background, from a small helper that ships with the app. Open Note still brings FoldNotes forward, as it should. On iOS 27.

• Pasting from Mail or Safari lost every paragraph break. A pasted email arrived as one long paragraph. It keeps its paragraphs now, and a paste no longer adds an empty line after it.

• A blank last row in a Bike outline got a new id every time the outline was opened and saved. Every row now keeps its id, as it does in Bike.

### 1.3.2 — 2026-09-20

Fixes for Bike outlines and local-only notes

• A line break pasted into a Bike row from another app no longer causes row ids to shift the next time the outline opens. Text copied from Mail or Safari carries an invisible line-break character; FoldNotes kept it inside the row, and on the next open every row below it took its neighbour's id — which broke Bike's calendar rows and row links. A paste now makes a new row, as it does in Bike, and an outline that already has one opens with its ids intact. Ids a file has already lost can't be restored.

• A Bike outline edited on another device while open on your iPhone is no longer overwritten. FoldNotes now re-checks the file when you return to the app and won't save over a change the phone hasn't seen yet; if both sides have changed, it asks which to keep.

• A local-only note could show "Checking for updates…" forever. After an app update the note's stored location had gone stale; the note is found again and opens normally.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-09-18

Fixes for Bike files and daily note links

• Exporting to Bike. The file FoldNotes writes now records a task's state the way Bike records it today, so Bike opens the file without offering to update its format.

• A Bike file stays a Bike file. After the app reloaded one — coming back to it, or returning from the background — ticking a task could append a "done:" date to the end of the row as plain text, the way a note does. The completion now goes where Bike keeps it.

• Unticking a task in Bike. FoldNotes followed the change in status but left its own completion mark on the row, so the task could still read as finished. It's cleared now.

• A row's log says when. Log entries showed the date the status changed; they now show the moment — "Today 6:30 am", "Yesterday 4:12 pm", the day and the time for anything older.

• Today's Daily Note inserted a link that opened nothing. The link didn't match the daily note's own name.

• Exporting your collection twice in a day proposed the same filename, because the name had lost its time.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-17

Your outline from the keyboard, and Siri you can listen to

• Fold a row from the keyboard, on iPad. ⌘9 folds the row the cursor is on and ⌘0 unfolds it one level; ⌃⌘9 and ⌃⌘0 (or ⌥⌘9 and ⌥⌘0) fold or unfold the row and everything inside it. Paragraph has moved from ⌘0 to ⌘7 to make room.

• Move rows with ⌃⌘↑ and ⌃⌘↓. The row at the cursor, or every line you've selected, moves with everything indented under it. In a note, a heading moves with its whole section and keeps its level; a list item takes its level from where it lands. Tasks keep their identity, and each press is one undo. ⌃⌘→ and ⌃⌘← indent and outdent.

• Move To (⌘\). Pick a heading — type to narrow the list, or start with - to search every row — and the rows become the first thing under it. Return moves them and takes the cursor along; Control-Return sends them and leaves the cursor where it was.

• Folds and moves slide into place, on iPhone and iPad, and so does undoing them.

• Siri reads your tasks out properly when there's no screen — in CarPlay and on AirPods. "What's due today in FoldNotes?" reads every task, up to ten and then how many more, without the details written on the line, and says the day as a word: today, tomorrow, Friday. Ask "What's overdue in FoldNotes?" for overdue tasks. Siri also recognises "Fold Notes" said as two words.

• "This week" means today and the next six days, in queries and database views as it already did on the Task Board and in Siri, and Due This Week now includes overdue tasks. New for a task's due date: "before N days from today", a date that moves with the calendar. You can also type a context in the query builder.

Also fixed

• A task added with Siri or the Add Task shortcut could fail to show up until the app noticed the change.

• A daily note first made by Siri or Shortcuts now follows your "New daily notes start with" setting.

• Coming back from a hoisted heading, a picture in the note could overlap the lines below it.
