## What is Following Eyes?

Somebody reaches for the candy bowl. The pumpkin's eyes slide over, find them, and hold. The mouth gives a startled little "ooh" — and then it just watches. They freeze. They lean sideways to test it. It follows.

That is the whole app, and it works every time.

CARVE ONE FIRST

Before you set it out, make it yours. Pull the eyes into a mean squint or a friendly gawp. Give it one enormous fang, or a mouthful of small ones, or no teeth at all. Bow the mouth into a grin or a scowl. Squash the gourd short and fat, or stretch it tall and sickly. Light the candle inside a warm orange, a swamp green, or a cold dead blue.

Then name it, save it, and carve another. Keep the whole patch and swap between them whenever you like.

Five are ready-carved if you would rather not start from nothing — a classic, a tall one, a friendly grin, a snagged fang, and a heavy brute. Copy any of them and make it worse.

THEN LET IT WATCH

Prop the device on a table by the door and walk away. The front camera finds whoever is standing there, and the eyes follow them; when a few people crowd in at once, it settles on whoever is nearest. With the room empty its gaze drifts and hunts, pausing at random, as though it is looking for someone.

POKE IT

It is not only for looking at. Tap its eyes and it blinks. Tap its nose and it flinches. Tap its mouth and it gapes. Flick it sideways and the whole gourd swings round and wobbles back — and if you keep flicking, it goes cross-eyed and dizzy for a few seconds before it pulls itself together.

NO CAMERA NEEDED

Follow-my-finger mode gives it something to look at indoors: drag anywhere and the eyes track your fingertip. Good for showing it off at a table, and it works with the camera switched off entirely.

MAKE IT BEHAVE

How eagerly the eyes react, how far they swing, and what it gets up to when it is bored. How much it flickers, breathes, bobs, and startles, too — each of those right down to nothing if you want it calm, or up if you want it strange.

IT RUNS ALL EVENING

Built to sit on a table for hours without cooking the battery. Through the long quiet stretches it quietly dials itself back, then jumps to full speed the moment somebody appears. Plugged in, it will outlast the trick-or-treaters.

NOT A VIDEO

Every frame is drawn by the device, live, on the GPU — there is not one photograph or looping clip anywhere in it. That is why it stays razor sharp on any screen, why the candlelight really gutters instead of repeating itself, and why carving moves actual geometry rather than swapping pictures.

PRIVACY, PLAINLY

The camera works out where people are standing. That is all it does, and it does it entirely on your device.

No image is ever saved. No image is ever shown, even to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, because there is no networking code in the app at all — it works perfectly in airplane mode. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party code of any kind. The only things kept on your device are the pumpkins you carved and your own settings, and one button in About erases both.

If you want to see how it is working, you can enable the "debug mode" in preferences and get a sense of what is happening behind the scenes. It is a lot like how your iOS device can unlock by just seeing your face - same concept, except it is only identifying that a person is there, not WHO that person is, and the app doesn't send ANYTHING out over the internet. This app is intended to be fun for kids (as well as adults), and thus privacy is mandatory, not optional.

GOOD TO KNOW

Works on iPad and iPhone, portrait or landscape.
Plug it in if you are running it all night.
It needs a little light to find faces. The pumpkin's own glow helps more than you would expect, but a pitch-dark porch is genuinely hard.
No sound, on purpose. It belongs in a room where people are talking.
