Walk the path of literature's greatest journeys!

As an avid book reader, I was always looking for ways to really put myself in the world of the protagonists of my favorite novels. Footnotes Character Journeys is my attempt to really put myself in the hiking boots of my heroes! In Footnotes, every step you take in the real world is reflected in Odysseus's journey home, Elizabeth's ride to Pemberley, or a Poe character's haunted walks. Footnotes uses your actual walking and cycling in the real world (as tracked in Apple Health) and maps that onto the journeys of literature's most legendary figures. Your actual GPS data is never used, only your raw distance traveled.

Thanks for walking with us! This update is all about making your journeys smoother and more reliable.

- **Progress that actually finishes.** Fixed the bugs where long journeys would stall out around 99% or get stuck at 100% without completing. Your final waypoint is now always reachable.
- **Distance starts right away.** New quests now track your steps from the very first one, instead of waiting for the first update.
- **More dependable notifications.** Waypoint arrivals now reliably show up whether the app is open, in your pocket, or resting in the background.
- **Apple Watch in sync.** Your watch and phone now agree on which waypoint you're heading to next.
- **A few crash fixes** around launching the app and abandoning a quest — both should feel rock solid now.
- **Polish** for the starting waypoint, permissions alerts, and iOS 26 compatibility.

Big changes!

1. Journeys now get themes, with unique icons and color schemes that match the vibe of the narratives
2. Added a new achievement for completing any category
3. Got rid of the sync button, since I found I never had reason to press it!
4. Made the narrative text just always black or white, to improve readability.

Cleaned up the rendering of the journey route -- now, the part of the route you've already walked is solid and brighter, and the unwalked portion is dashed and dimmer.
