I am totally committed to this app, but as described in other reviews it has more than one achilles heal. My particular issue is that it has a buffering problem. If you are writing your own scores or charts from scratch or marking things up with the annotation bar, it has occasion to erase a huge portion of your work when you close the annotation bar. It does this at random. I find myself having to rewrite all or a portion of a chart at least once every time I have a medium sized chart session (15 or more). These are mostly one pagers and two pagers. If you are scoring on this by hand the potential to lose a large portion of work is very real. They have known of the problem for years. Do a search. Sadly it is a great app and many of the people I work with use it. Other issues that have been brought up are moving work across platforms. ### 3/5 — Good App navigation is a challenge *2026-08-25, version 15.1.2* Love the app except navigation needs a lot of improvement to make it more intuitive. It’s always been fantastic on iPad, and I give THAT app 5 stars. Unfortunately, on my MacBook Air (M3) and iMac (M1), since the last major OS update, ForScore will not run. It opens and crashes. I’ve uninstalled multiple times, to no success. Very frustrating, as I have all the music syncing to iCloud and want to work off and share sheet music through my computers, rather than having to airdrop to a device that is connected already. ### 4/5 — Super app *2026-07-26, version 15.1.2* Pro ou pas, c’est un incontournable! Now buggy abandonware. *2026-07-16, version 15.1.2* Forscore was recommended to me for readIng renaissance polyphony from facsimile editions. I’ve now been using it for several months, and I’m hooked. Goodbye to struggling with crufty, dog-eared paper copies in poor light! It’s hard to think of any comment that hasn’t been made here before, except that... ... in another life I have to read technical manuals in PDF form, and I needed an app in which to make marginal notes. It took an embarrassingly long time to realise that I already had one. Update (after several years use): I'm downgrading this to 2 stars for the following reasons: 1. The developer, a single programmer it seems, appears to have lost interest in this program, and neither posts updates nor responds to bug reports. 2. There are long-standing bugs that can require an app hard-restart during rehearsal/performance: 2.1. The spontaneous, random, event of appearance of the page-scroll-thumbnail, obscuring part of the page, and persisting until an app hard-restart, and 2.2. The inability to turn pages after hiding the default annotation layer, for which the workround seems to require an app hard-restart followed by the creation of a score-layer. Beware getting locked-in to this app. With hundreds of scores and countless hours of annotations, I find myself trapped in a proprietary format with no migration path out of it. ### 3/5 — Great…and awful *2026-07-13, version 15.1.2* Forscore is a terrific app for storing, displaying and marking up scores with great features. The syncing between Apple devices is a nightmare and has been for several years. Forscore REALLY needs to get serious about fixing this. It really undermines the user experience causing vast amounts of time wasted consulting help, customer service, deleting, backing up re-syncing and more. . ### 4/5 — Very good but still room to be better *2026-07-01, version 15.1.2* The app does the job nicely for the most part. Little missing things here and there keep it from being great—when installing on a new device, I have to add a document on that device first to be able to set up iCloud sync; and I’ve found no way to move multiple items to a library in one go. But there is a fatal flaw which undermines the functionality and usability of the software which the company has singularly failed to fix, in spite of copious expressions of frustration from users. The Achilles’ heel is synchronizing scores across devices. Like many other users, I have spent hours coping with failed syncs, errors, duplications, grayed out scores. This in spite of trying every fix the company - and other users - have suggested. Several times I have had to delete scores and rebuild the library. It’s about time the company listened to its users and fixed this. I have too much invested in a large score library to switch but if you are starting from scratch, I recommend that you steer clear of this software until it has been fixed. ### 1/5 — Extremely frustrating *2026-06-23, version 15.1.2* I have used this app since 2019 and up to this point I have enjoyed all the features that this app has to offer. After the last update, I lost hours upon hours of set lists that I complied over the years, and the new menu to songs is absolutely terrible. Unfortunately, I have grown accustomed to most of the changes, but I have to ask the question. Why? Why did create an update that erased all my work? I’ve tried other score programs, but the brunt of my library exists on ForScore. Usually when you get an update, it doesn’t erase the work you already have put it. The recent list needs to go back to what it was prior to the update. ### 1/5 — iPhone syncing fails often without notice *2026-06-16, version 15.1.2* I have forscore on Mac iPad and iPhone. I do most of the Inuit on Mac, most playing using iPad, and use iPhone just because it’s handy at times. iPhone consistently stops syncing due to some vague “server date” problem. Restarting requires choosing server or iOS. Unacceptable. I’m deleting the iPhone app. ### 1/5 — New version kills iCloud sync with old version?? *2026-06-12, version 15.1.2* TLDR: DO NOT UPGRADE if you are using iCloud syncing with any older iPads. New version of forScore appears to transparently change sync data without warning, which prevents older versions from syncing. Bought a new iPad last month and installed forScore on it. Set up iCloud syncing like normal. It’s not my sheet music iPad, but nice to have music on it for the occasional use. Went to my sheet music iPad today and realized it hasn’t synced since last month. Dragged down in the dialog box to force a sync, and an error message pops up: “forScore Update Required.” Okay, went to App Store. No updates available - forScore requires iOS 17 or later. Sheet music iPad is an old iPad Pro, because hey it’s just sheet music and that doesn’t require much processing power. Was working great, until I have to upgrade iOS, and the iPad is too old to do that. And now I can’t sync my sheet music, so the iPad basically got obsoleted with no warning and no way to roll it back. To be clear, my complaint is not that forScore got upgraded and now only supports newer iOSes. That’s fine and appropriate. My complaint is that setting up iCloud sync on a newer version apparently changed my sync data and has now rendered my previously functional iPad useless. There was no warning from forScore that they were going to do this. There’s no backwards compatibility. There’s no way to roll back either the forScore version or the old iCloud sync data. There’s no way to get my previously perfectly functional iPad working again. Really feels like a particularly customer-unfriendly approach. Wish I had literally any option other than buying a new iPad. 🤦‍♂️ ### 1/5 — Fix the piano!! *2026-06-12, version 15.1.2* Piano feature used to be really useful but now can’t pin it on the page, so it now hides half the page of music. Why??? It used to be fine, why change it to make it more awkward??? ### 1/5 — Unresponsive app and No Support for help *2026-06-11, version 15.1.2* This app, although great in theory, does not do anything it says it does in the screen shots. I Cant even find their phone or email for help. Way too difficult for a beginner. This has happened before when the app wasn’t recently updated but I’ve checked if I need to update it and that’s not it. Have tried reloading the app and that’s not helped. Have also tried turning my iPad on and off and that won’t fix it either. Not sure what to do but for an app that costs the amount it does I would expect problems like this to have been sorted out eons ago. I’ve learned to quickly scan sheet music into FS, and organize large amounts of various types of music by entering the metadata that works for me. I can’t wait to get into the built in practice tools like the metronome and tuner. I’ve still got a lot to do but now I have the tools to do it. Since I play in big jazz bands, small ensembles, quartets and trios, as well as for church, I never would be able to manage all those scores if they were in hard copy. I have a library for each and create set lists as needed for a particular gig or Sunday service. I have over 2700 songs/arrangements on my iPads (yes, I use two because sometimes page turns are particularly hard on piano and accordion scores, so I can set up difficult page turns easier this way. Well worth the extra and it’s comforting to know everything is backed up, should I lose one pad. Don’t know what I ever did without For Score and my iPads. ### 5/5 — Love it *2026-08-10, version 15.1.2* A great app but I really wish that highlights would go under the notes, not over them. I know it’s possible because the app notability does it for my scores.
