### 4/5 — Decent Scriptwriting

*2026-02-15, version 0.55*

Not bad, nice that I don’t have to pay $100 bucks for a year. Would be cool if you started typing and it suggested the command, like INT. and then it would pop up with like (PLACE - TIME) or something, otherwise you have to remember exactly how screenwriting format goes— like how youmescript does. Wish I could change it from dark to light mode within the app too, and see the page breaks, where the page ends. Maybe I can if my ipad is in light mode? I dunno. But props to the creator and thanks for a solid base scriptwriting service!

### 4/5 — Excellent App and Format! However, the AI generated Iron Breeds Doubt…

*2025-12-10*

This is my second time writing this review since it bugged out last time. Anyways, this app is WONDERFUL. It makes screenplay writing very accessible. There is no tricky maneuvers or cut corners. The provided writing instructions are clear and concise. And the formatting is perfect. It is by far the best screenplay app I have ever downloaded. So I would like to congratulate the developers on that!👏

However… I have one concern.

And that is the AI Generated Icon. In this world’s environment, it is getting increasingly harder for artists and writers to protect their work from getting stolen. Especially from people who feed it these AI Engines or just use them to generate content. And while I wouldn’t want to accuse anyone of this, images like this one are usually a telltale sign of that happening. And it makes the app look inherently less trust worthy. I feel I would be more comfortable using an app that didn’t show signs of the developers using AI in a creative space. And if they are, I would urge them to stop, as it harms more people than most think.

In short, great app with an easy to use format! But an icon change and/or some clarification would be appreciated. Having both would be preferable.

**Developer response:** Hey there! Thanks for the review! Happy to report that the icon is not AI-generated 🙂 I worked with a friend to design it. Happy writing!

### 4/5 — Not intuitive

*2025-09-29, version 0.52*

If you do press “tips” before starting writing there is no way to figure out how to use the app

### 5/5 — Not crashing anymore

*2025-07-02, version 0.47*

I previously gave this 3 stars because it was crashing frequently. The most recent update seems to have fixed this issue. Thank you to the quick developer who resolved this!

### 4/5 — Enjoying the ease! Couple quirks.

*2025-06-10, version 0.44*

This runs very smooth on my iPhone and iPad. Much better than all the high-end screenplay apps. There are a few quirks, though. It'd be nice to force a Slugline (for instance with a period before a word like "Intercut"). That's how the other apps do it. Having a full action line in all caps converts into a really long character name (It'd be helpful if it's only registered as a character if normal dialogue follows on the next line). Also, it'd be nice to be able to do Dual Dialogue by adding the ^ to the following character name. I am used to writing in fountain/mark down for screenplays, so these were pretty glaring to me. However, the writing experience is so smooth and nice, I have no problem working in this app on my iphone/ipad, then copy/pasting into my pro app on my desktop for the PDF with more features (like a full title page creation with image options and adding non-script preface pages).

### 5/5 — way better than final draft go

*2025-05-28, version 0.44*

first of all LOVE THAT ITS ACTUALLY FREE PLS PLS KEEP IT THAT WAY. second, this feels much more initiative than final draft go, especially the actual writing aspect. On the iPad it’s so hard to change the format of specific elements and i love how it’s much easier on this app to switch

### 4/5 — Extremely clean and simple. Easy to use.

*2025-05-17, version 0.43*

This would be a glowing 5-star review, but I had to knock it down a star for two reasons: 1) The non-removable “Made In Fountain” + QR Code watermark on exported PDFs. Which I see CONSTANTLY because of 2) The lack of a paginated view UNTIL go to export a PDF. I use pages as a rough idea for how long a scene I’m writing is, so being able to see that while I’m actively instead of having to go to Share > PDF is preferred.

### 5/5 — FIXED IN UPDATE: Bug makes it useless for over fifteen lines

*2025-05-04*

(Issue no longer occurs) I appreciate this app’s existence—totally free screenwriting software is fairly rare, especially for iOS—but there is a bug that prevents me from writing over fifteen lines. The text continues behind the keyboard and is inaccessible.

**Developer response:** Hey - sorry you ran into this! This was an edge case on certain devices, and should be fixed in the latest update. Please holler if you discover any issues!

### 5/5 — Very Good! Simple UI, Easy to Use

*2025-04-17, version 0.41*

The title basically says it all, this is a very nice app and it’s not even at version 1.0! I like that you can choose the default storage (Dropbox, iCloud, on device), however, I would love to see (if it’s even possible) the option to choose a custom default folder rather than the created Fountain folder. That’s certainly a nit-pick, but I like to structure my folders in a specific manner. Obviously, I can just move the document to whatever folder I like once it is created, but I’m laaaazy.

### 5/5 — Perfect for early drafts

*2025-03-28, version 0.36*

This app launches and works faster than any other tool out there. It’s ideal for getting ideas and dialogue down quickly. Now that it’s got title pages it has everything you need to crank out a first draft. Move to other/expensive tools later if you need to. Kudos for the free software mate!

### 5/5 — Awesome little app

*2025-03-21, version 0.32*

FINALLY. The lack of simple no-strings-attached screenwriting apps on the App Store has always been strange to me. This app is simple and does exactly what it says. And it’s FREE. I wish more apps were like this. Sure, if you want a million features and beat boards and “character analysis” (whatever that means) then by all means pay $10-$100 for something else. But if you’re ready to get writing…this app is for you

### 4/5 — Nice, but one issue

*2025-03-15, version 0.30*

I love the simplicity of this app. Easy to use and fairly intuitive, but when I export to pdf, I lose the last line on each page.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — there are way better free options

*2026-07-01, version 0.64*

Always thankful for more options in the Fountain screenwriting space, but this barey even functions. There’s no way to literally SAVE A NEW FILE to a folder on your computer. There’s no autocomplete of characters, so you can enjoy typing those names over and over again. And somehow the document isn’t even in Courier, which is 100% the industry standard. Hard pass in a world where you can use the full-featured (and frequently updated) Fountain editor Beat completely for free.

### 1/5 — Don’t change a document title

*2026-01-01, version 0.52*

I changed the title of my document. It deleted all of my work and there is no version history.

### 1/5 — non-functional

*2025-07-20, version 0.50*

Always thankful for more options in the Fountain screenwriting space, but this doesn’t even function. There’s no way to literally SAVE A NEW FILE to a folder on your computer. There’s no autocomplete of characters, so you can enjoy typing those names over and over again. If you look past all that, it wants to put a nasty little QR code watermark on every page of your PDF. Hard pass in a world where you can use the full-featured Fountain editor Beat completely for free.

### 1/5 — Severely lacking

*2025-03-03, version 0.30*

Cheers for anyone willing to provide software for free, but (I’m sorry) this tool is extremely undercooked and lacks in most of the features a professional writer would expect.

Calling the software “Fountain” verges on scam, since we all know Fountain is a plain text markup language for screenwriting used in many good tools.

Also, calling this the first fully native screenplay editor for iOS, Mac, etc. is deceptive.

### 1/5 — Boots me out

*2024-12-26, version 0.30*

I’d write a few sentences and then it would kick me off the app

### 2/5 — I use it on both iOS and Mac … Mac version needs work

*2026-08-08, version 0.64*

I’m constantly renaming the file because it constantly changes back to Untitled. Today it stopped saving. You guys really have to thoroughly test this. There’s no reason to miss this kind of functionality.

### 2/5 — Bug makes it useless for over fifteen lines

*2025-04-24*

### 3/5 — Good but a few bugs

*2026-02-08, version 0.54*

I mostly think this is a good app for writing screenplays, but it has a pretty noticeable bug. When I am writing dialogue it breaks the line and starts a new one when I don’t want to. This happens not at the end of a sentence but in the middle of words. For example: I’ll be writ- Ing and it just stops and makes a new line. This happens when I am writing character names too. In all i think it’s pretty good and having the tips easily assessable is nice, but you definitely need a little experience in screen writing to know exactly what each command does and what it means.

### 3/5 — Great app - would love if it worked

*2025-06-26*

Crashes too much to be usable

**Developer response:** Sorry you had this issue! I think I fixed the source of the crash. Mind giving the update a try and letting me know how it goes? 👉 fountainappdev@gmail.com

### 3/5 — Not ready for iPhone yet

*2025-02-14, version 0.30*

It keeps crashing consistently. I’m writing and then BAM! It closes. I like the idea behind it but it’s just a little frustrating

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Best app and script writing ever!

*2026-07-02, version 0.64*

I had to wish that of screenwriting app, and it looks so rad! I will continue to writing something of script for movie, and I will give 5 stars. Highly recommended!

### 5/5 — Powerful

*2026-06-29, version 0.63*

Need I say more?

### 5/5 — Larry Weissmann

*2026-05-18, version 0.59*

So much easier than any other

### 5/5 — Excellent App and Format!

UPDATE: Thank you to the wonderful developers for confirming the icon is not AI! With that, I am changing my review to a full five stars! Would 100% recommend this app! Especially for beginner screenplay writers!😁✨

### 5/5 — OMG!!

*2026-01-23, version 0.53*

I’m in the middle of writing a tv show to post on YouTube (it will be posted on “The Ginger Fam” it’s called The RiverLine Mystery) and this works SOOO well for the scripts!! It even gives you instructions on how to use is and everything! They’re no ads, you don’t have to pay for anything. It’s all free!! I 1000% recommend this!! 5/5!! (Make sure to go watch the show! Comes out December 2026-January 2027

### 5/5 — It works!

*2025-10-22, version 0.52*

It says it’s “easy screenwriting” and it is. And it’s free. A great way to test the screenwriting waters before you dive in.

### 5/5 — Had me at the description!

*2025-10-02, version 0.52*

Full disclosure, I’m just an average 25yr old guy who found a love for the “what goes into making a movie/show?” In fact, rewatching The Walking Dead had sparked my interest. I had started book projects (all still WIP) back in 2023 but took a long creative break. Then came my screenplay interest in late 2024. I started off on WriterDuet for iOS, and let me tell you… I do have a fondness for the app. It may not have been updated in a year or more now, but the occasional bugs brought back fond memories of growing up around mid to late 2000’s computer tech. I did get rather irked when I got onto my third episode as, although it autosaves locally and to the cloud, app crashed so I force closed it and reopening it, a good 30 of the 43 pages I had composed disappeared, Gone with the Glitch style. So I took a break again to not get upset about it and resumed my books. Now I’m back into screenwriting (untreated ADHD, yes I know) and in search of a good app that isn’t reliant on a subscription model to access the majority of its functions and also not be centered around AI. Yes I think AI can be useful but most of the time I prefer my brain do the thinking, my ADHD is bad enough as is. And let me tell you, aside from WD and a few others, they all fail my marks. Then I found this, didn’t see it before but I just updated my 16PM to iOS 26 today and it was the first suggestion when I typed “screenwriting” on the App Store search.

I saw the showcase review and description which locked me in immediately. I LOVE that it’s made by a GENUINE person as a passion project and not some big TOP 100 company or scammer looking for a cash grab. And for the year-ish that it shows being on the App Store, it receives regular updates and is well received by most users.

With that being said, I have not used the app yet; however, I am excited to test it out and, once I have a feel for its functionality, rewrite my current project in Fountain. If the app passes all my marks, I would happily pay $4.99/$6.99 as a one time payment to support the developer of this, especially if everything is offered ad-free, etc. In a few days time, I will return to add my user review onto this. Until then, this is Doggone Good Deal of the Day, signing off. ✌️

### 5/5 — Free, simple, highly functional, cross-device 🙌

*2025-09-26, version 0.52*

Amazing app. Spent way too long searching for free screenwriting software before I found this. It used iCloud to sync everything, and all the files are simply .TXT files in iCloud, which take up very minimal space.

It’s simple and intuitive, syncs across all my devices, and has proper screenwriting formatting.

Thank you!!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2025-09-15, version 0.52*

I don’t have any problems with it. Lyrics have been fixed since my last review, and it works better than other screenwriting apps I’ve tried.

### 5/5 — I love it

*2025-07-26, version 0.50*

It works great on my iPad I wrote my last screenwrite with this. The only issue is I would add a tittle page so you have it nice and organized when you print it
