### 5/5 — Totally recommend

*2026-08-13, version 1.10.10*

This app has really helped me to be more compassionate towards myself and to help figure out what I am thinking/feeling and why.

### 5/5 — Such a good App

*2026-08-12, version 1.10.10*

I just installed it today, it’s so cute! I really love the fact that it makes a story line and an illustrative book, I also love that I can journal in it whenever, and not at a specific time.

### 5/5 — Love ❤️

*2026-08-12, version 1.10.9*

I Like This App So Much It Helps Me Learn My Emotions Are To Help Not to Fight

### 5/5 — Hooray

*2026-08-12, version 1.10.9*

I’m someone who struggles with BPD, anxiety, and depression. My therapist recommended I journal. But, I had a hard time remembering to do so or even bringing myself to do it. I didn’t have a motivation. I work better that way. But, I discovered this app. I’ve been journaling every single day. I really enjoy how you get rewarded for doing journal entries or the grounding exercises. I showed this app to my therapist and she found it unique. Overall, amazing experience.

### 5/5 — I love this app

*2026-08-12, version 1.10.9*

The journaling prompts are better than my other journaling app, and it’s easier to add and take stock of gratitude and achievements. I didn’t think the journeys/stories would help me, but it’s only been a week and they already have.
It’s not for habit tracking, but it will prompt you for your most important task of the day which has been extremely helpful.
It also has a clothing/decorating component which I love, and it’s not addicting like the bird app. No friends, so no FOMO or feeling pressured to check in/send gifts. It’s like your personal guided mental health journey with cute decorations, which has been fun and refreshing.

### 5/5 — SO FUN

*2026-08-11, version 1.10.9*

I love this so much more than Finch I feel like I can actually get my thoughts out better. The events aren’t as stressful and last longer and are way more fun. I love my little fox. If you loved Finch you should give this a try it’s 100 times better!

### 5/5 — Wonderful

*2026-08-11, version 1.10.9*

I’ve been playing for a few months now and it is amazing! I love foxes, but this game has other animals that guide you on a journey of self discovery, how to handle stress, etc. It is a cute mood tracker that helps me everyday keep track of my thoughts and feelings. Highly HIGHLY recommend! 🦊

### 5/5 — Journaling made simple & relaxing

*2026-08-11, version 1.10.9*

I love that this app gives options to write whatever you want or follow a prompt depending on what you want to explore. The design and prompts are so calming and make journaling feel easy and enjoyable. Really loving it so far!

### 5/5 — This app is helping me so much

*2026-08-11, version 1.10.9*

This app helps me identify my emotions, and what’s contributing to them and reflect on things. It makes checking in with myself feel less overwhelming and open ended. I find the definitions of emotions helpful and the shuffle button on the journal questions to be really helpful when I’m not feeling talkative about why I’m feeling how I’m feeling. I love checking on my fox friend, dressing her up and all the little lessons. It’s honestly just so helpful!

### 5/5 — Built for Consistent Growth

*2026-08-10, version 1.10.9*

Been using this for over a year and can’t say enough good things about it. It is designed for steady progress without being addictive, it is thoughtful and manageable. I often think of the things I’ve learned from the bite-sized lessons. My husband who is a researcher appreciates the research-based content. I use it consistently with my 9-year-old as well and am pleased it can be a part of forming her understanding of mental health care. Love it!

### 5/5 — Love the free version

*2026-08-09, version 1.10.9*

The word that comes to mind for this app is gentle. It gently guides you through exploring your emotions with prompts and an interactive story. I think the best part is the daily prompt to list things you’re grateful for.

### 5/5 — Fun, simple, no pressure

*2026-08-09, version 1.10.9*

While I’m aware of most of this games teachings, it’s such a calm affirmation to go through it. There’s no big pressure to click or do, and moments of not “getting something correct” are handled gently. Cute graphics, calm pace, pleasant colors. Fun without the pressure. I haven’t paid for full features but the free version has great core features to work with and get yourself on track

### 5/5 — Confused but pleased

*2026-08-07, version 1.10.8*

I was looking for an app to where I could journal and try and understand my emotions and Foxtale looked promising.
I Struggle with high anxiety and was trying to find productive ways to channel my energy and accomplish more during the day. That’s when I decided to give Foxtale a try. It’s similar to other virtual care pet apps but this is the first one that coaches and inspires people with emotional challenges. After several days I was really enjoying it and came daily to be encouraged, learning to see challenges not as obstacles but as pathways to improvement. Not being
able to Afford another premium app I declined their offer for Foxtail PLUS. But after being rewarded with 3 Foxtale PLUS days free, with no obligations I found being a PLUS user had its advantages. More clothing and furnishings available. More journeys. It was nice. Then when that ended I was given a shot at Foxtail PLUS at a really rock bottom price for being a loyal user for those 3 free days. Before I could say yes the offer disappeared and was replaced with a less optimal offer and my hope of getting Foxtale PLUS evaporated. Left confused and disappointed. It is however a great app and has real potential for those who can afford PLUS. It’s even great using the free version. I’m a little frustrated but will more than likely continue using Foxtale as hope for a less stressful tomorrow is something we all need.

### 5/5 — So helpful

*2026-08-06, version 1.10.8*

It seems silly, at first, playing a game with a little cartoon. But the lessons in this app are actually super helpful. You can set the specifications for what you’re dealing with in life and it has prompts and activities that help work on those areas. And I like that it’s not super cartoony! An enjoyable way to work on your mental health.

### 5/5 — Foxtale is a really good app

*2026-08-06, version 1.10.8*

It helps with my anxiety, grief and so much more if you are struggling with anxiety or depression or whatever like I do download this app now

### 5/5 — Just right

*2026-08-04, version 1.10.8*

After spending three plus years on finch, I was looking for something that was still fun but that had more depth and behavioral reinforcement involved. I feel like with finch, it’s become about the things you can buy to dress and decorate and less about mental health improvement. I’ve been using this app for a week and I feel like it strikes a great balance. It doesn’t feel like a chore to come back daily.

### 5/5 — Great Tool alongside Therapy

*2026-08-03, version 1.10.8*

This is the perfect tool to use alongside therapy, reinforcing all of the things I’m learning and helping me put them into practice. I’m using the free version for now and it is lovely. Well made, keeps me engaged, helps me tap into my feelings better than regular journaling. I am quite happy with it.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Force Closes

*2026-08-15, version 1.10.10*

Really excited about this until the app just quit on me 3 times trying to do my first journal entry. Now I’m over it :’(

### 1/5 — No free version

*2026-07-18, version 1.10.6*

This app as far as I can tell does not have a free version. The first time I opened the app it forced me into agreeing to a 7 day free trial before I could even start setting up an account or use any other features on the app. The app won’t send you a notification when this free trial is up and will automatically charge your card. Incredibly disappointing for a mental health app. It’s basically just a glorified digital journal and it doesn’t really teach you anything about depression/anxiety than surface level stuff that’s already floating around all over the place on the internet. Could be so much better than what it is. Could actually be useful, but it just falls short.

### 1/5 — Great app, no ads, and everyone can benefit from the free version

*2026-01-21*

I really enjoy this app and find it helpful. The daily check-ins have helped me immensely in understanding and reflecting on my emotions and why I’m feeling them. The app has helped me regain control of emotional spirals (ruminating thoughts, catastrophizing, etc) and it’s also just really fun and cute. I genuinely think everyone can benefit from using this app.

My one and only gripe is the price of the “Plus” subscription which is not at all required in order to use and enjoy the app. (I know the devs are very cognizant of affordability and making sure that critical features aren’t paywalled so that even people who can’t afford a subscription can use and find significant value in their apps. I really appreciate that.) I also use and subscribe to Bearable, another great app by the same devs, and I’d like to subscribe to Foxtale but an annual subscription is more than twice the price of Bearable. It would be nice if there were a savings bundle to subscribe to both at once.

But even without a subscription it’s an easy 5 stars from me!

Edit: Revised down from 5 stars because the new update asks you to disclose personal health information with the tenuous promise to “personalize the experience” and there is no option to opt out or not participate. I’m really disappointed to see this dev team gathering such invasive data points in the current political climate with zero regard for user privacy and no without giving users the option to not participate in these “features”. Yuck.

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for the kind words!!

EDIT - Hi Charlie, there is an option at the bottom called "None of the above" to opt out. We asked users to optionally disclose their conditions/disorders to help us understand who we might need to tailor content to, or what changes we might need to make to current content. Considering there is no sign in required for the app, this data is aggregated and totally anonymised and not attached to any personal information. I hope this clears things up, but let me know if you have other questions at support@joinfoxtale.com. Hi Charlie did you have any further questions?

### 1/5 — Cute but overpriced and doesn’t integrate with bearable

*2025-12-12*

I think the fox and interface are cute and it makes me think about my moods/feelings, but they don't transfer to the Bearable app, so I have to do it manually for the same app company. The journaling prompts are nice but not better than free iPhone options. I can do everything except the cartoon fox and without a new high subscription. I found a 50% off early offer on Bearable Reddit, but I couldn't use it since I already found the app in the App Store under apps from Bearable.

**Developer response:** Hi Reid, would you like to have a chat to discuss how we could improve Foxtale for you? I'm running some calls with early users and would love to find out how we can be better. Thanks

### 2/5 — Not at your pace

*2026-06-17, version 1.10.3*

The app is cute and has a lot of potential, but you can’t go at your own pace; you’re forced to go with the app’s pace, which is extremely slow. It only lets you progress a tiny bit every day, and there’s zero explanation for it. It’s basically like if you went to a new therapist who asked “What does sadness mean to you?”, then pushed you out the door and said “we’ll talk more about it tomorrow!” I truly don’t understand why it’s set up this way.

### 3/5 — Not for me

*2026-06-22, version 1.10.4*

I saw recommendations about this app, and at first I thought it would be a good fit, but after a couple weeks of using it, it feels more annoying than anything. I don’t like to journal on my phone, and I am frustrated sometimes when *people* ask me how I feel, so to have an app ask me how I feel and dig into what that all stems from just doesn’t work with my brain. I’m sure it’s great for some people, but not for me.

### 3/5 — Pay

*2026-01-01, version 1.7.16*

Of course you have to pay for it because why would anything be free especially when it comes to your mental health

### 4/5 — Been great so far.

*2026-08-20, version 1.10.11*

I don’t really like journaling and have tried everything. My therapist keeps recommending that I search for something that works. I think I’ve finally found the journaling app for me. It’s interactive and fun. Keeps me interested. I gave it four stars because I’d really like to see a way to print and/or turn your journal entries into a PDF. Allowing this for other parts of the app would be great as well. I’m thinking mostly of the charts and insights. I’d also like to see a feature for allowing photos to be attached to journal entries. Maybe also have it read the Health app on the iPhone that way these highlights could be added to the journal entry.

### 4/5 — ME LOVES IT

*2026-08-03, version 1.10.8*

It’s so cute and I love it it really helps. I just wish everything didn’t cost so much and that there are more ways to get coins than journaling of the side quests. But it’s so cute and I’ve recommended to my friends a lot

### 4/5 — Mostly good

*2026-07-07, version 1.10.6*

I think there are some things hidden behind a paywall I would like to see in the free version, but nothing that would prevent me from recommending. I struggle immensely with emotional regulation and understanding. This has helped so far. I also have Finch which is more for building habits and I think the two combined are very helpful in maintaining stability

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Better than finch (ADHDer here)

*2026-08-20, version 1.10.11*

I’ve had finch for 2 years but I personally found it more cute and addictive than helpful. This app is cute and has features that make you want to return without being addictive and actually helps you understand yourself while also getting important things done. It’s mainly about journaling and the characters in this app have very emotionally intelligent advice that so put so easily into words. I like that the shop doesn’t refresh new items and makes you spend your stones, making the shopping feature still enjoyable but not the main feature.

### 5/5 — Can’t recommend Foxtale ENOUGH!!! 🦊💖

*2026-08-20, version 1.10.11*

I used to use Finch but I was always wishing it was more in depth and less task/list-based. This is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for, and as a psychology student I LOVE the citations provided at the end of each lesson. The Orb calendar is REALLY amazing to see because the change in my thinking patterns since starting to use Foxtale is VISIBLE based on the colors present in each orb. I don’t even notice it until I went back a month and saw the drastic changes. I shared this app with my therapist who is going to be sharing it with other clients she thinks can benefit from this. The developers have done amazing work! 🙌🏼 When I check in every day, it feels like I’m checking in with my little digital pet but also like I’m checking in with myself- something I wasn’t good at before, and didn’t make enough time for. I can’t recommend Foxtale enough!!

### 5/5 — So far really good

*2026-08-19, version 1.10.11*

I’ve been using this app for about a week and so far, while it’s not actual therapy, it has been helpful with logging my emotions and helping me to look deeper into the emotions themselves. It’s helped me learn to journal to get my thoughts out and it helps remind me of the things I’m grateful for.

### 5/5 — Love this app!

*2026-08-18, version 1.10.11*

I love checking in with my little fox at the end of the day and learning new things about anxiety. It’s very sweet!

### 5/5 — Adorable

*2026-08-17, version 1.10.11*

Very cute game. Interesting emotional development techniques, using writing prompts and character growth to motivate players to keep writing.

### 5/5 — Self care journey

*2026-08-17, version 1.10.11*

I decided to download this app to understand emotions. It’s honestly so cute and if I could afford it, I’d definitely pay for it. It’s very informative and you can guide yourself to understanding yourself more.

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2026-08-16, version 1.10.10*

I appreciate the ease of this game, and the warm welcome from the cute character when I open the app! Adorable graphics and easy, helpful and low urgency game that has helpful tips.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2026-08-16, version 1.10.10*

It's very interactive and cute.they do need an iPad version of the app

### 5/5 — Improve your self worth

*2026-08-15, version 1.10.10*

I’ve been using this app for about two weeks. The storyline and journaling has been so helpful to understanding my situation and myself. My own self worth has grown and I am definitely feeling more positive than I was when I began this journey. It’s an adorable and perfect app that doesn’t require a lot but gives you so much.

### 5/5 — Very engaging and useful

*2026-08-13, version 1.10.10*

I really enjoy the Foxtale app. I am going through a rough patch and this app helps me journal. I love the visuals. I would love to see a feature to export my journal to something like PDF or CSV that I can keep on my laptop or share, e.g. with my therapist.
