For this class, we were required to critically analyze a few apps that are available to implement into your classroom. One such app was Fraction Circles. Personally, I would not spend the money for this app. I don't think it is any more helpful than actually using Fraction Circle manipulatives. In fact, I feel that most students would gain a better understanding of fractions by actually using the physical manipulatives rather than this technological tool. There are no game instructions provided to the students, nor are there any explanations about why an answer is correct or incorrect. Although it is a pretty self-explanatory app, I believe that students need this guidance in order to gain a better understanding of the content. Teachers sometimes use apps as an assessment tool to track indivdual student's progress over time. However, this app does not keep record of the user's work, so it would be difficult for the teacher to utilize Fraction Circles as an assessment. This app also doesn't have options or controls such as level difficulty or sound on/off, so it would be hard for teachers to cater this app for individual student learning needs. Overall, I didn't find this app to be very helpful in regards to content knowledge and I would not buy it to use in my classroom. ### 2/5 — No snap-to position *2013-06-03* This game is very basic, but doesn't seem like it would be worthwhile for it's target demographic of early elementary children. My complaints are: 1) you can't turn the sound off without turning the volume all the way down. 2) no instructions for each game. 3) in factory fractions, the edges don't snap to each other, and the tolerance for matching is low, making it very difficult for younger kids. 4) there is no way to delete a single piece (can 'recycle' last piece, or all, but not selected) ### 1/5 — disapointing *2013-05-31* there is no How to Play, no Help, and no popups to explain anything! I cannot even get past the 2nd question in the Fraction game. I add two halves and the game does not recognize it as correct. And I am an adult, imagine a kid trying to play it! I just figured out the issue: there is no "snap" function, therefore sliding a piece into place is extremely difficult. Also, bizarrely, the game allows pieces to be overlapped. Very counterintuitive, since it allows you to fill up a Whole with MORE than a whole! To the developers, pls correct these issues, but you also should have the game with the labels actually ON the pieces so kids can learn to add them up to a whole. ### 5/5 — fractions *2012-09-25* My kids learn fractions with this game at school.
