I went on a road trip and used it to find campsites (many free ones), and it was so helpful. Most of the places I stayed at were found on this app. The review system is awesome and can give you a ton of information about a camping area. I also began writing reviews of spots I visited to help others. 100% recommend this app. It’s also completely free without advertisements! ### 5/5 — Fantastic resource! *2022-06-22, version 2.0.6* I’ve used this app and a few other camp finding apps and this one is by far my favorite. The community is fantastic and really adds great info to the listings. Info is reliable and the app has always worked well. One thing I would change about it is when you are adding or reviewing a camp spot, I wish there was an option to say wether it’s tent friendly. This would be super helpful for me when filtering results. ### 5/5 — I feel more comfortable now *2022-05-10, version 2.0.6* Really at least wanted a fresh start on at least the basics and the tutorial video is a must. Very helpful and yes I did see some things that where not completely developed like the rating and feedback but what do you expect from a newer app to grow I did like the part that shows in a pinch areas like Walmart etc to go if all else fails and I do like the the overlays and filters used…BLM and USFS area explanations helped a lot . All in all I am happy and not stressing as hard about planning. This app has the travel stops, Walmart’s, national forests, BLM land, free and paid camping places. They also have a super cool trip planning feature that shows you your route on the map with where stops are and how far they are between each other. Well designed! ### 5/5 — Live by it! *2022-04-25, version 2.0.6* I love free roam! I really do! I’m a solo traveler, I travel the country in my van with my two dogs and this app has been a lifesaver! Many of times I decide to hit the road with out having a plan in hand, therefore I depend on FreeRoam to get me places, find a great sleeping spot, a quick washroom, or bite to eat! Finding a safe spot to sleep is really important, especially being a solo traveler, knowing that I have freedom to depend on, I do feel confident and safe to travel alone! It’s a great app, I do highly suggest you do write reviews for other travelers for they are very helpful. It is everything I wiuld want in a camping app. Really. Deleting all the others off my devices. Probably what hooked me was the “how-to” video from the developer. If I were to design an ap for camping, I would have done it just like this. One thing I don’t see and wish I did( which I might just be blind) is the option to add other people to your trip plan as a co creator, and also a way to send the trip as a map instead of just a list…. Again I only just downloaded the app the other day so I might just not know how to do that ### 5/5 — Everything you could need *2022-01-17, version 2.0.6* This app is amazing, I downloaded 4 or 5 at the same time because I was going to compile everything and make my own map, but this app goes above and beyond and does everything for you. It has direct links to things you need for your build, it has chat groups specific to your rig, if shows all kinds of spots and tells you everything you need to know about them. I don’t normally review apps but this is so great! ### 5/5 — An awesome and commendable effort *2021-12-26, version 2.0.6* Really useful, offers thoughtful features that make planning camping easier (e.g. cell signal overlays), and super convenient BLM/National Forest overlays that are hard to find elsewhere. A few UI limitations (e.g. the adjustable opacity doesn't seem to work on Mac browser or iPad app, app version can't save offline datw) but I’m not complaining since this is a free volunteer effort. Thanks to the devs! Seems to be attracting more and more campsite reviews which only makes it get better and more useful. ### 5/5 — Relying on this almost exclusively. *2021-11-04, version 2.0.6* There are a lot of new apps being developed but they don’t have the info this has; I appreciate all the reviews from people and the pics. I find this super easy to navigate and appreciate the cell service filter because it’s a necessity for me with daily calls. However, what I have had a hard time with in trip planning is where to find the “saved” sites for me to return to? I haven’t figured that out yet so am using pen and paper. But I sure appreciate this app. ### 5/5 — Intro Video is the Best!! *2021-09-12, version 2.0.6* They have this awesome introductory video that is Super helpful and gives directions for how to overlay maps, look out for wildfires and smoke, toggle between filters, and all the bells and whistles. This is the coolest app for us living in a CamperVan and is our number 1 go-to for late night and last minute options for a place to crash while on the road. Love it!! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 2/5 — Good at not accurate privacy concern *2021-07-09, version 2.0.6* This is a decent app he didn’t give me a good amount of information and had some sites that other websites did not have. My issues is with the mapping overlays. They are not very accurate at all. I don’t expect for BLM or these types of mats to be exact but they have been off way more than what’s acceptable especially the cellular signal overlays.I booked a campground site and dependent upon this app giving me decent information as to the T-Mobile signal in the area. It is not consistent with the T-Mobile coverage map online by 5 miles. That is just too far off. Also collecting data from the clipboard is unacceptable. What people need to understand is that hackers know programming and make apps!! ### 3/5 — Disappointed in what we thought would be a life saver *2023-04-29* We are new to RV living and downloaded this app mostly to find free locations as we are traveling across the country. The past 3 nights I have found Pilot Flying J's and Love's Travel Centers on our own. They aren't showing up at all on the app. Most nights I enter it in our trip when we get there for accuracy. It's a real shame. Is there some issue because at the beginning of our trip both showed up as options. Also, it would be nice if we automatically saw our current location when we opened the app. Maybe I made a mistake in my settings, but it's just not as easy to navigate as I expected. ### 3/5 — A nice beginning *2019-11-04, version 2.0.6* I noticed a couple interface issues: 1. When you click on a campground, etc, the info pop up stays up with no way to remove it until you leave the map tab and then return or choose another campsite. Clutters up the map when you are searching. 2. Wondering about your weather source and accuracy as well as how the actual forecast is pulled down: looking at one campsite, I saw what was clearly a regional or nearby region vs the actual pinpoint location. The several thousand foot altitude difference from the campground to where forecast seemed to be from makes for a very inaccurate forecast. All that being said, I like the interface and look forward to seeing how this evolves. ### 4/5 — Needs a report button *2023-03-20* Some (a small amount) of these campsites within the app aren’t campsites anymore or they’re straight up someone’s private home. We need the ability to report camp sites that are no longer available to the public and the ability to remove non actual campsites. Otherwise FreeRoam is an amazing app! I truly love their plan ahead feature they have allowing you to plan trips in advance. Another feature I’d like to see is the ability to communicate with nearby Free-roams like Waze has. Keep it anonymous unless the two people chatting agree to meet up though… ### 4/5 — Frustrated *2022-12-17, version 2.0.6* Trip planning very difficult. Planning 4 m swing thru AZ into CA and back. Sometimes adds, sometimes doesn’t. Can’t get to maintrip page to check. I’ll gradually figure it out I’m sure. Then adds 4th site at the start of trip instead of date sequential. Can’t figure out how to get in correct order. No drag n drop. I travel w horses, zero horse friendly info. I have 30’ living quarters horse trailer Dodge Ram dually and 2 horses. Difficult to plan trip and navigate between pages. I hit save it doesn’t save. I love the temp scale and elevations are vip for winter or summer trips. When I put in an area to search, it does not take me there. Not even the state. Or if I enter a National park. Towns not listed until zooming way in so very hard to find vicinity I need to search. Labeling rec, NP, etc areas would really help the search. Granted, I am NOT the techiest person I sure hope it gets better. BLM etc map overlays very good. Easy. To add one of the horse camps I’m going to. 68, RN riding free! Good concept TY for hard work. More helpful than any others I’ve found. ### 4/5 — go to boondocking app *2022-09-11, version 2.0.6* This is my favourite boondocking app. Campendium is nice, but not supportive of anarchical Communism. iOverlander is the most popular, but has a very Microsoft/Google look. Admittedly, FreeRoam is relatively clunky. Saving to the app and photo uploads, if they succeed, are slow. Here’s a thought. After you find your first campsite using this app, or any boondocking app, write a review or add a campsite. Every time you have used the app to find x number of campsites, write a review or add a new campsite. Please pay it forward! The app is only as good as we make it. Giving is a gift. Live well. Love well. ### 4/5 — One big issue *2021-07-13, version 2.0.6* The biggest problem with this app is that there is no way to filter out the campsites you saved so you can see them on the map. For me that’s such a huge inconvenience because how am I supposed to find where I’m going and plan my trip if I can’t see where the campsite is on the map comparative to all the other spots? I gave it 4 stars though cuz it’s still a great idea. Just needs some refinement. ### 4/5 — Great app that shows tons of camping options! *2021-06-28, version 2.0.6* Love the ease of this app and that you can save locations for future use. Only thing that would make it perfect is a way to see yourself on the map to see how close you are to these locations. Maybe it’s user error but I can’t figure that part out. Otherwise locations are great and kept up to date with nice detailed reviews. Thanks! ### 4/5 — Great App!! Needs some minor changes.. *2021-06-04, version 2.0.6* This app is awesome and the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is due to the tough time seeing road and highways names when you’re not zoomed in. You can see them when you get really close but it would be great if there was a ‘layer’ that added road names and towns. This way it would be easier to plan out stops on your trip. Keep up the good work!! ### 4/5 — Great crowd sourced tool *2021-06-02, version 2.0.6* Lots of useful info, fairly easy to use. Some bugs and glitches can be frustrating but don’t take away from the fact that this is highly valuable database of camping info. The most important issue that needs to be resolved is a bug with the offline mode. I understand the developer is working on a fix for this. To work around the lack of an offline mode I would search for a site when I had a data connection and then save a pin drop on an offline Google map so I would always have access to it. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Nice planning app *2023-05-23* Used this for a few multi day trips and like it. It takes a bit to figure out how to add but once you get the hang, easy to use. One suggestion: when entering a stop, it would be really helpful if the dates tracked your trip. As it is now, always defaults to the date you are data entering, so for example if my trip is next month, once I add a stop on a certain date, the next stops date should be the one I just used rather than the day I’m doing the planning. ### 5/5 — Layers of info *2023-05-08* First off: best free app out there. THANK YOU! So many layers of information, if you know where to find it. I especially value the BLM/USFS overlays to know I am boondocking on public lands. The cell service overlays and average temp info is such a bonus! If you click on the map (outside an exact location) you’ll be able to see what department manages the land and get more detailed information from their website: such as what restrictions are currently in place (campfires fires etc) or road closures - which would be impossible to keep current on the app itself. Love that users are asked to rate things such as crowdedness, road conditions and cleanliness: not all 5-stars are equal so it’s good to have the additional info! Room for improvement: it would be great to be able to edit a prior review. For example I have often wanted to add images of the road conditions on the way out. It would also be great to be able to suggest an edit (remove spots/ change name etc) but I know that would have a lot of admin requirements, and as a free app that might not be feasible. Overall- really such a critical tool for those of us on the road. You can tell the developer(s) have lived the lifestyle and have put a lot of thought into making it as helpful as possible! ### 5/5 — Helpful tool for planning *2023-01-08, version 2.0.6* I started using this app about a third of the way into a 5-month cross country trip. It has really made planning easy! I would love a way to include addresses of contacts that I include in my travels but don’t want to share with the whole community. As it is, I just choose a Walmart that’s near my destination as a stand in. ### 5/5 — Invaluable *2022-12-06, version 2.0.6* As a lady that often travels solo, this app is amazing. I love the community, thanks so much to everyone who leaves reviews (especially with photos!) because it always helps me feel better when trying to find a safe spot. I definitely don’t use this app to its fullest but it is my go-to, especially for finding dispersed camping areas. To the developers and the FreeRoam community: thank you all so much!!!! ### 5/5 — Wonderful *2022-11-18, version 2.0.6* This app, if used by more people, would be such a great resource for all of us camping or living on the road. Tons of unverified spots and what not, but if we all put the spots we know of on here, it would be full of free and paid sites. Just put one on there today. Not a complicated process. The overlay for blm, usfs, and cell networks is a plus for me as well. I was just in pisgah national forest and could see where the boundary of the land as well as the cell network was together. Important if you work on the road. Anyway. Great app. Put in the work and help everyone else find these great spots along the way. ### 5/5 — Clutch *2022-10-10, version 2.0.6* Community sourced reviews and basic info on campsites and boondocking sites all over the USA — so clutch for planning ahead, getting a sense of options in the area, or confirming your expectations of a site you’re considering already. Everything from established campgrounds with infrastructure to popular and rare spots to legally spend a few nights however you like to sleep. ### 5/5 — One of a vanlifers must have if on the road. *2022-10-07, version 2.0.6* I love this app. Sure dose it need a bit of work to polish it? Yes. But I understand that confirming all of their waymarks would be an insane amount of work and a huge undertaking. It’s smart to fall back on it the users reviews. And as the app ages and gains popularity it will only make it better. I love that they’ve added a forum and chat into their app because it’s lonely on the road sometimes and having the ability to talk to the community helps and also novice rv/vanlifers can ask veterans questions. When I did a long hike on the Appalachian trail this app was pinnacle for me hiking New Hampshire and Maine because of the brilliant filters for cell service. I could know where I’d have service and be able to call home or a hostel. It’s also great that they have every Walmart and Cracker Barrel and other free spots. I’ve stay at a few of the obscure boondocking sites listed and have really enjoyed myself. There’s no way I would have found them on my own. But let’s be serious this app shouldn’t get anything less than five stars because it’s FREE. An app I used to love was the Dyrt app but they changed to subscription and now I’ll probably never use that app again as they locked up all the filters. Thank you for putting this info together and keeping it free! ### 5/5 — Best App EVER *2022-09-19, version 2.0.6* Seriously, I have No complaints with this app. Definitely use it every weekend. So happy with how it works! The only thing I wish it did was show your current location on the map and connect with Apple Maps! But honestly I can't complain. Wonderfully designed and easy to use. I like how easy it is to use. The social feature is really great too. The amount of good information on this one app is amazing! I still have several other similar apps just in case I need to cross-reference, but this is always the first app I open when looking for a good place to set up camp for the night.
