I love the varied vocabulary (poop?) . I would recommend using an auditory program in conjunction with this. The explanations on verb usage are just like you'd get in high school...useless, in my opinion. Using the pimsleur approach also teaches you the proper usage (1 tho' not spelling) of various forms. I'm glad I have this app! ### 4/5 — Fine tuning *2012-11-10, version 6.4* I enjoy and find it helpful. I would give it a much higher rating if you would explain errors after the fact, change the font to something more pleasant to the eye; your font is somewhat distracting. for errors in verbs a link to conjugation page to force review of problematic verb tenses. Please update and good work. The best french intermediate and advanced learning tool. I've tried them all! ### 4/5 — French class *2012-10-18, version 6.4* This is a good app. It has lots of words and various catergories and all verbs and tense. however I had some trouble getting the audio to work even after purchase. It's all going well now and the app is great. ### 4/5 — Great app for compact reviewer of French Grammar *2012-07-30* This app is a very handy and compact summary of French grammar and vocab. Great for people who already know a bit of French but need to brush up on selected aspects of the language. ### 4/5 — Good but could be better *2012-05-24* For the most part I like the app. It has a list of vocabulary words each with the audio. The audio is good although can be sometimes a bit fast. There is also a list of verbs and a list of common basic phases essential to someone who is planning a trip to France. There are grammar rules and tests just to give you the nuts and bolts to start with. Overall it's a great app but would like to see pictures with each word in the vocabulary. Maybe add more to really help the learner to engage more of their senses such as to read it, write it, see it, hear it, say it, then repeat it. Oh, and don't forget to review, review, review. ### 4/5 — An excellent work in progress. *2012-05-16* Overall a worthy app. Especially at the price. The audio is good feature although sometimes too fast and often robotic sounding. Wish irregular verb tenses were audible The quiz format while adequate is not necessarily the most engaging or learning optimized- would be interested in seeing it augmented by more interactive and varied game mechanics ala mind snacks( in contrast a very good game system but shallow in scope with no real grammar training and a very limited touristy vocabulary. ). There are typos and mistakes here and there but all in all the program is very thorough and basically covers 2 -4 semesters of a college language course. Considering its price, it should save you a few thousand bones and hours. ### 4/5 — Very good not perfect. *2012-03-14, version 6* It's the best learn French app I've found and I've tried quite a few. I got the basic then upgraded to the full version. Something that encouraged me to make the purchase was they didn't design an app then make it barely useable without upgrading and constantly reminding you to do so. They allow you complete access to course one so you know whether this style of learning works for you. So I would recommend completing course one and then you know if you want the other courses. The way it trains you to make instant associations between English and French vocabulary is very good. The app design is simple and unbuggy. My one criticism is that it's better for revision than learning. The actual learning section is just lots of text with no exercises. I didn't bother with it at all for the vocabulary, but the revision exercises were so good that I got the vocabulary that way, but as an app for learning grammar it's not very good. There is a huge mass of small text with no interaction that you just have to hope you memorise and understand. Then when you get to the revision your faced with questions where your answer is a complete shot in the dark. I'd really like to see an update that meant you could learn grammar before you revised it, but it's the best app available for learning vocabulary. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Audio *2013-01-28, version 6.5* This is so not right and misleading. It said by purchasing the audio, all the words will be pronounced but only fraction of them is! I bought it specifically for the pronounciation and now I paid for product that doesn't give me that in any of the exercises. ### 2/5 — Not the best *2012-06-27, version 6.2* Has very extensive categories of vocab. However, as a beginner in French I need clear and slow audio to actually learn how to say and understand the words. I purchased the audio upgrade but find it really difficult to hear and then repeat what I've heard. They definitely need to fix that. I've found better free French language aps. ### 3/5 — A good app *2017-07-31, version 7.58* It's a little dull, but it's a solid app. Though I think it could do with a make up, it offers many different exercises to increase your French grammar and vocabulary. It could improve on its listening exercises, but overall a good app. ### 3/5 — It's ok *2012-12-28, version 6.5* you have to make an in app purchase for any vocal help which is .99c which isn't much but after you have already paid you would think it would be standard. The app assumes you have prior knowledge of French words and there is no instructions on how to use the app. I wish I hadn't paid for this app. ### 3/5 — Ok but could use some tweaking *2012-07-24, version 6.2* It's entertaining enough for my bus ride but the grammar explanations are quite thin. Quizzes on prepositions but section dedicated to them. Also would like explanations for why answers are wrong after getting it wrong. As it is, you can get help before submitting an answer but if it's wrong you can't learn more about why it's wrong. It also could be more advanced. ### 3/5 — Decent review... HATE the graphics!! *2012-06-14* Decent beginner/intermediate French review. I like the quizzes, but utterly hate the bimbo buxom Barbie 'French teacher' cartoon you're forced to look at. Please can't I have the option to change the background?? If it weren't so stupid, I'd say the creators were rather sexist. Get real - not all French students are hormone-driven teenage boys... ### 3/5 — Good but why so much with the preterite? *2012-05-11* This is a decent ap. I like that it has grammar quizzes as well as vocab and conjugation. But I don't understand why the verb reference and quizzes have preterite and not passé compose? In 4 years studying French, I've never had to use preterite, but passé compose is very common and there are some tricky conjugations. ### 4/5 — Engaging Language App *2018-01-20, version 7.58* This is an engaging Language App and I admit to being a bit addicted to it. There is a lot of flexibility in the exercises being able to select the syntax structures on which to test yourself. The 'listening' exercise is really difficult but it's really helping. If I were to make one improvement, I would like to be able to hear the sentence again when I make an error so that I can spend time fine-tuning my listening. Nevertheless, well worth the money to buy the full version. Play the sentence, listen, and then choose which words you have heard. You can also slow down the sentence, enabling you to hear in a slower speed. If you choose the wrong answer(s), The app shows you the sentence, the answer(s) you chose, and the correct answer(s). Then you tap on the Ok button and the app goes immediately to the next sentence. At the end of the listening exercise, a page comes up with the Results of your efforts. Very nice. I hope that they can eventually add more data. There is a combination of vocab, grammar info and quizzes. You can customise tests from french - english and english - french so you can test in both directions. It also has picture and audio tests to help with learning and it will remember your mistakes so you can practice them. I recommend it to every beginning or intermediate French speaker who wants to improve his or her skills. I like that it breaks down the vocabulary and grammar down in small bits that I can learn whilst waiting or traveling. It's generally easy to use and the exercises are clear and not too hard nor too easy. It also avoids going into too much grammatical detail like other apps often tend to do (and thereby utterly confuse me). Rather it focuses eg. on the common rules and exceptions which I need in everyday life.
