### 4/5 — Wonderful product

*2025-04-02, version 7.0.2*

5 stars for the product but 4 stars for the app. The leds are programmed way too bright and I need to wear sunglasses to sustain using the system. However it is fun, rewarding, and I’m already seeing progress as a long time player.

### 5/5 — Easy to understand

*2025-01-07, version 7.0.2*

I have a acoustic guitar and I really like the courses that are in the app for that!! Very convenient

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2025-01-06, version 7.0.2*

I’ve always wanted to learn to play . My husband got me a guitar for my birthday with 2 free months of teaching for beginners. I’ve learned so much in the first week ! But after 2 weeks , I was able to do anymore lessons. 😞 who do I contact ?

### 5/5 — Ukexcellence

*2024-12-26, version 7.0.2*

Simple, straightforward lessons.

### 5/5 — It works, it works good!

*2024-11-22, version 7.0.2*

Sets up well, app os straight forward. This is a great tool for beginners or guys like me who have been playing chords for years unwilling to learn the neck. Now the neck is being learned using lights. Awesome!

### 5/5 — Good stuff at a great price!

*2024-10-06, version 7.0.1*

35 years ago I took guitar lessons and was paying a hundred dollars a month for in person lessons at the local music store. This format of watching lessons on the Internet is so much more efficient and far cheaper!
Here, you can progress at your own pace. When you take in person lessons, if you get behind, the next lesson that you pay for isn’t going to go well. Yes, you were getting in person feedback from your teacher, but you are also being forced to move ahead, whether you are ready or not, which can be frustrating. I also noticed that it depended on what mood my teacher was in on how good of a lesson I got. The lessons could be very disjointed because he couldn’t remember what he taught you the last time. Here, each lesson builds up upon the next and you can go back as many times as you need to, if you didn’t understand something the first time. I’m sold. I did the free week trial but I will be paying for the yearly subscription.

### 5/5 — Theory

*2024-01-30, version 6.2.2*

I love it! I started with the 30 days acoustic challenge and now I am going back to learn the complete guitar theory. This is wonderful! Just doing the 1st lesson in theory is like a aww ha moment. Fret zealot online training in a game changer! Totally recommend it!

### 5/5 — Great customer service

*2024-01-12*

Hi I recently bought a guitar with the fret zealot system. I love my guitar and I love the system. The online training is amazing for beginners like myself. I have learned so much form this app and the LED system makes everything so much easier. I did have an issue that I couldn’t figure out and so I reached out to customer service and Shaun was very helpful. It took us a couple of days to figure it out but we got it resolved. I really appreciate Shaun for being so kind and patient and you can tell that he really cares about helping us out and making it right. Thank you Shaun for your help! 😊

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — The most horrible app to exist!

*2026-01-04, version 7.0.2*

DONT GET THIS! This is so bad I got a guitar for Christmas and tried this app… it’s not even clear! The lessons are sooooo hard to follow and doesn’t even have my favorite guitar player on there Dasha. DONT get this app it doesn’t help at all!

### 1/5 — Horrible greedy app that doesn’t work

*2024-07-22, version 7.0.1*

When I first got the app I was told to confirm my email to use it. Every time i went to confirm it would ask me again to go and confirm so couldn’t even use the app. Naturally I deleted my account but tell me why you still attempted to charge me. Don’t waste your time

### 1/5 — 2 critical issues (and 1 gripe) on an otherwise amazing product

*2024-03-16, version 6.2.2*

I love this and I plan to use it a lot to learn scales and write bass lines. That said, there are 2 glaring mistakes and 1 gripe. 1. On the scale exercises, The Degrees of the keys are not numbered correctly. The “Root” is numbered “0” not “1”, meaning that the “1” is the “2”, the “2” is the “3”, etc... this is a totally egregious error and violates basic music theory. You can even see this in the photos provided on the app page right here in the App Store (photo 5 as of writing this). Luckily it should be easy to fix. Start the key numbering at 1, not 0. 2. When assigning the light colors to the scales. It should be based on the degrees of the key, not the notes. So if I try to color the “1” or “root” note as green, the 3rd as blue and the 5th as orange, then color the 2,4,6,7 as red, it only works in one key. As soon as I switch the key I have to recolor the notes. It seems to me that allowing a person to have a “template” for how they want their keys colored should be a no brainer. 3. Bass players are people too! Haha. Seriously. All the tutorials online, social content… it’s all for guitars. Also, can we get a 5 and 6 string bass version? I’ll change my review to 5 stars if you fix 1 and 2. Otherwise I think it misses the mark just enough. But I’ll still be using it. Great product overall.

### 1/5 — Solid content, garbage customer service

*2023-10-10, version 6.2.1*

Got this app through the Apple Store, got to use it for about a month before it asked me to confirm my email, which was some random email generator that apple provided.

So I’m paying for the app and not able to use it. Asked customer service to either switch the email over to my real email or give me a refund. Neither happened after trying at least 8 times.

They kept responding telling me they extended my free trial, whatever that is, but it makes no sense because I can’t even access the content.

Letting the subscription lapse and counting my losses, but not without dropping a review.

### 1/5 — Free?

*2022-11-09, version 5.0*

Spent the money for the hardware from Amazon.
Of course that’s not free, understandably. Downloaded the app, and the only thing I’ve found to be free is the free trial.
Wasted time and money buying the hardware, and installing it.

### 1/5 — Bought to learn scales

*2019-02-12, version 1.2.1*

All of your scales are wrong! The wrong lights light up. Please fix this, it’s not hard to get the right scales.
Great concept, execution really disappointing.

Was looking forward to using this product, now I just feel conned.

### 2/5 — So close

*2018-03-13*

I love the concept but there are a few problems.

They must and I repeat must better fit the fretboard better. This is a real problem...I had to raise the action to get it to play right. Because it doesn’t fit right...and the strips being made of rubber bending the strings as you go up the fretboard makes a difference in playability. The connection from the fretboard to the unit is a crucial connection and it is way to fragile...my connection severed when it got caught on a mic stand...it was a day old! They charged me $53 to replace the led strip!

The app is too basic. I like the scales but the songs? Seriously? Every track has 5 or 6 guitar parts and they don’t all play at once. Not only that but if you are trying to learn a song you have to cycle through all the parts and try to figure out how they fit together to try to make a single track from end to end.

Did you guys look at successful tab apps (tab pro) before making yours?

I understand the complexity involved (I made the same thing for my keyboard...but you probably went with a binary protocol making conversions from midi or tabs a freakin nightmare.

Cmon guys get it together. You spent a lot of time on the hardware charging us $200 to recoup costs...but you have compromised the usability by cutting corners!

You can still recover, but if you want to cater to serious players you need to make a pro level product.

**Developer response:** Hi RSH- thank you for the feedback! We'd actually love to talk to you directly if you email support@FretZealot.com (or we'll try and email you) so we can continue to fine tune Fret Zealot (both hardware and app).

Regarding when you caught your unit on a stand and broke it- we have questions. We purposely made the audio cable able to disconnect at either end for exactly that reason, so we're surprised the cable broke instead of the cable just releasing.

For songs, we spent 1000s of hours on a transcoder and it's getting better every month. We don't source from tabs (they don't have timing data), so we're coming from MIDI. It is not a simple binary protocol by any means.

Yes- we know tab pro. We're trying to talk to them to have them incorporate our SDK rather than us trying to reiterate all the hard work they've done. It's a great help if you email them and say you want them to support us! Our SDK would let you use Fret Zealot right from their existing app :-). We already have a few other partners lined up for this, including GuitarPro files. That's next on our development plan!

Hopefully we'll be in touch to discuss these items further!

### 3/5 — Crashing

*2021-07-31, version 3.8*

The app crashes when I try to save a course. Needs to be fixed ASAP.

### 3/5 — Good but needs better search

*2018-04-22, version 1.1.1*

Real technology. Excited to start using it, but in the latest version of the app it’s really hard to find songs to practice. You can only keyword search by artist. This app needs song browsing by artist, and genre at minimum. Also would like to see standards such as twelve bar blues.

### 4/5 — Great video lessons

*2025-10-31, version 7.0.2*

Does not rotate with mobile devices when looking at lesson overviews. So after every instructional video, I have to read sideways or rotate my device. Other than that, I’m enjoying the app on Apple and Android devices.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — First time beginner

*2026-01-06, version 7.0.2*

The lessons and examples are explained sometimes more than once and not rushed. I love it!

### 5/5 — THIS BEST GUITAR APP EVER!

*2026-01-01, version 7.0.2*

This app has helped me SO much with the guitar and the teachers are VERY supportive and helpful and encouraging! That’s why I love this app

### 5/5 — Great system to build skills

*2025-08-28, version 7.0.2*

I had been in a rut for a while with my guitar skills and purchased the original system to help with my training. It has been invaluable. The ability to learn appropriate scales for different styles has been invaluable as I am a visual learner and seeing the patterns and learning where the root note is accelerated with the led system. Installation was simple and it has stayed in place since I put it on my guitar in 2023. The ability to learn songs quicker is also improved with the songs to use and learn within the app. I can’t recommend this system enough and they customer support is exemplary. Buy it today, you won’t be disappointed!

### 5/5 — So far so good

*2025-07-06, version 7.0.2*

He breaks it down in an easy to understand layout and teaching style. I like that he provides reassurance that it won’t be perfect at first but encourages one to keep practicing and going through the lessons. I have learned a lot in the first few lessons and look forward to learning more!

### 5/5 — Level 2

*2025-06-25, version 7.0.2*

Well explained! Thanks for going slow and making it understandable. Sounds cool too.

### 5/5 — Fret Zealot 2

*2025-05-19, version 7.0.2*

My wish is having a Brightness Slider; instead of 3 preset levels of brightness. Want to dim the lights as a background prop using the Light Shows. The Low preset is uncomfortable to my eyes, and being able to slide brightness would help me find the sweet spot for my ideal experience.

Overall, my first few hours with this product has been awesome. :-)

### 5/5 — I love it

*2025-02-28, version 7.0.2*

I am intermediate player and have a serious hearing loss. I also learn best by doing by myself vs personal lessens. YouTube videos have helped a lot but most are either hard for me to follow or the instructor covers his fingers and videos are poorly presented. The fret zealot gives me full control over the fingering and cords plus the speed. The visual view of finger placement frees me from my hearing from barrier. Compared to $50/hour of private lessons it’s a real bargain. Also, the support has been superior. They back up their guarantee. Now I hope they add a voice recognition feature that shows the note being sung with an option of showing the note in the song or scale. I have found nothing suitable to see my notes being song and able to compare what I am hearing. I took singing lessons but they no longer help. Visual feedback would be awesome and life changing. Keep up the good work.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2025-02-19, version 7.0.2*

I went from a amateur, to someone who knows the basic In just a couple days! Amazing app for beginners, intermediates, or someone who wants to pick up on instruments again. The instructors don’t rush you to learn something, and take there time to make sure you understand. Wonderful, definitely recommend!
