### 4/5 — Review

*2022-04-11, version 1.09*

The AI is weak, even at the toughest setting.

### 4/5 — Better then Panzer general

*2021-10-25, version 1.09*

There is such a demand for games like this and yet the developers stuck with the old worn out hex games instead of enhancing this. I am asking the developer to fix the problems, expand the game. This developer has several so-so games because they keep using the engine they use for the civil war games, Romans, Hannibal and others which are all me to games. This engine is better and smoother. The previous game based on d-day could also be updated and included. This could easily be a 5 star.
PREVIOUS REVIEW This is a great game but could use a few more units. Also, there is at least 3 scenarios where you meet all three objectives but it says you missed one. Finally, I have played all three campaigns and we could use a fourth or the ability to play as the Allies. Too bad the developer has pretty much walked away from this engine but still worth a purchase. I knocked it down to 4 stars because the developer has abandoned it and it now has several glitches. Still enjoyable but they are foolish for not fixing and expanding it.

### 3/5 — Great until you get to Act III

*2020-07-15, version 1.09*

It gets real buggy on Act III including impossible situations where you cannot get a complete victory in two battles.

### 4/5 — Solid effort for a beer and pretzel game

*2019-04-22, version 1.09*

Very simple ai; but still fun. I wish matrix would hurry up and release more serious squad based games

### 4/5 — The missions after the first get too hard

*2019-02-20, version 1.09*

I gave it a three star review because missions after the first get very hard, and in my opinion they get too hard after the first.

### 3/5 — Enjoyable Game

*2018-06-04, version 1.09*

I played through the 12 Scenarios. It’s very much like Panzer General or Panzer Corps which I really enjoy. I didn’t encounter any significant bugs, which was nice... and there is a real ‘blitzkrieg’ element that makes the battles compelling. A solid 4 star game, except that I paid for this game and I’m annoyed to see in game purchase offers on my battle map. Save it for the credits or leave it out. I didn’t pay for in-game marketing!

### 4/5 — Popcorn For The Mind

*2018-04-22, version 1.09*

But, very high quality popcorn! Diverting.

### 4/5 — Great war game

*2016-10-11, version 1.09*

It is a fun and addictive war game - it is very good to kill some time when commuting.

### 4/5 — Nice War Strategy Game.

*2015-12-29, version 1.09*

Intuitive game play, strategy and tactics only, no wasting time building an empire, challenging enough to keep you interested and nice graphics.

### 3/5 — I like it

*2015-07-06, version 1.05*

Please fix Leningrad supply issue. I noticed no updates in a few months. It's game that's strategy but yet not boring. Fix that and the easy swipe turn button and 5 stars you get.

### 4/5 — fun history themed turn based strategy

*2015-06-09, version 1.05*

This is a fun game, especially for someone like me who likes ww2 and history. Unfortunetaly the UI is REALLY small, and there are a few glitches in the current version, but that has not kept me from thouroughly enjoying the game.

### 4/5 — Decent effort

*2014-12-26, version 1.05*

Overall a good game. AI could be a little smarter , the Leningrad scenario the supply/reinforcement button doesn't work, and the belgograd scenario one of the soviet units is hidden off map so one of the conditions
Can never be met. Oh, and saved games don't save all the captures so they need to be retaken.

### 4/5 — Fun but with issues

*2014-09-30, version 1.05*

Scenarios are fun, but a few issues affect the game. The first makes the game stop at Leningrad, you can't buy units or supply them as that part of the interface won't respond.
The other seems to be a misalignment Og the hex grid with touch controls. Instead of selecting a unit sometime you get the options menu

### 4/5 — Nice game. Needs help

*2014-08-02, version 1.05*

It's a really nice, fun, challenging game. It would be nice if you could bring your units along. It also needs more variety. It wears out too quickly for such a nice system.
Update:I enjoy playing this game. It's fun. I'd like random campaigns with core units that develop as you go along.

### 4/5 — iPhone 5s, iOS 7.x

*2014-07-30, version 1.05*

The only reason that I don't play Panzer Corps now is that it is an iPad-only title and IS NOT AVAILABLE ON MAC. Neither is Commander: The Great War for some reason... This title, though pretty good in its own right, just feels slightly overpriced. And, for the record, I paid $20 for Panzer Corps and X-COM, respectively, and have bought several iOS titles in the $10-20 range. $5 total for this one would have been fair. That's just the way I feel. So there. As it stands, I probably won't buy the expansions at $2 apiece. I got Shenandoah's Road to Moscow for $3 just a few weeks ago (after paying the full price for its predecessor, Battle of the Bulge). Some might argue that RtM is worth a great deal more than $3 and I'd be hard-pressed to disagree. I would refute the same argument for this title being worth more, though.

Couple of questions for Ian at Slitherine: Will PC and C:TGW ever make it to Macs? Will they be enabled on next-gen iPhones with larger screens, eg, 4.7 and 5.5 inches?

PS, the text within RtM's chyrons is really, really small on the iPhone's screen. Might want to take a look at that, devs.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Could Be a Great Game...

*2014-12-20, version 1.05*

This game really has a lot going for it - it is fun to play and addictive. But - it has so many significant programming issues that it is virtually unplayable. Scenarios will suddenly end before play is finished - frustrating when you've spent an hour or more fighting for a victory. Accidentally brush the end of turn button and it jumps to the AIs turn. (there should be a dialog asking if you really are finished with your turn -standard practice in computer games). The edge of the screen is unreadable but units are often here but out of reach. The AI could be much more clever, but the main point is that the programming is so sloppy that the game is unplayable. You never know when it will quit on you.
I purchased all of the scenarios so Im out about $10. Not the end of the world, but this game should not be for sale until these huge bugs are fixed. There in no excuse for this being released in this condition.

### 1/5 — Would you like to pay for 4 missions ?

*2014-05-27, version 1.01*

I really like this game , but for your initial purchase you only get the tutorial and "act 1" . Which is only about 4 missions . Then you see this huge map and you have to pay for the rest . I have never seen a game you pay for charge you for the REST OF THE ACTUAL GAME YOU ALL READY PAYED FOR ! Normally I don't mind IAP especially if it's a new campaign or a "scenario" which are perfect for a strategy game but this is crap . The sad part is that I really like the game and think it plays well , but for right now I'd suggest not to buy !!!!!

### 2/5 — Not worth it

*2020-09-28, version 1.09*

I save 1 star ratings for apps that are broken.

This one needs a much better tutorial and better balancing of German and Soviet forces.

### 2/5 — Nice But

*2019-09-14, version 1.09*

The game does not let you attack Moscow ! Even if you win all the battles there is no attacking Moscow.

### 2/5 — Fun, but too buggy

*2017-04-26, version 1.09*

Sometimes units will not respond to supply, attack or movement orders. When you are about to assault and a critical unit fails for no reason it is extremely frustrating. I can usually compensate, but I think there are just some "dead" hexes, whereby the option to supply shows a cost, but there is no way to interact with the unit. Anyway, makes some scenarios impossible to play. Don't buy the expansions, they're the buggiest.

### 2/5 — Nice graphics but short story line

*2016-11-07, version 1.09*

So I finished this in 3 hours and now they are asking for additional $$$ to continue the game. Don't waste your money - very easy to win and really not much strategy.

### 2/5 — But

*2016-06-05, version 1.09*

This is a really good game with great graphics, then it has problems.
The battle for Lenningrad does not allow you to use reinforcements or even pull up the pull-up. Since there is no manual or tutorial you have no way of knowing where the problem is or if it's supposed to do that?

### 2/5 — Slithering doesn't care

*2016-03-10, version 1.09*

There was a small bug that didn't allow people to see unit strength. One would assume it's an easy fix. It's been a year since they fixed it. Don't buy. Company doesn't care about supporting games.

### 2/5 — Need a microscope to read a lot of the text

*2014-06-10, version 1.01*

The text in the help and in the bottom left window on main screen is 'ridiculously, small. Game play is same old thing as games before it. Nothing new here.

### 3/5 — NOT better than Panzer General....

*2021-05-17, version 1.09*

OK game, but not as sophisticated as the panzer general series or other turn based games where, for instance specific units can last
throughout the campaign, gaining experience and upgrades. There is also no defensive artillery support or fighter escort defense to speak of.
It’s a pretty basic game, but still fun.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Just hard enough

*2020-04-14, version 1.09*

I love hex based TBS games, but I’m not all that good at them. Difficulty ramps up nicely resulting in a good learning curve. Graphics and sound are great. Can’t comment as to historical accuracy; I’m just playing for fun, and fun it is!

### 5/5 — Fun game

*2016-03-01, version 1.09*

Great turn based game

### 5/5 — Nice iPhone War Game

*2015-01-24, version 1.05*

Long time fan of Close Combat since the original I found this on the current makers website. It has great graphics, fun for the iPhone, not too complicated and fairly sort scenarios which are good for an iPhone compared to a computer game where it's easier to sit for 2-3 hours in from of a big 27" monitor...very impressed at how well this is put together for the handheld device.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2014-09-10, version 1.05*

You have to watch your units and control for ammo running out.

Played some more. Dude the flanking maneuvers and surrender maneuvers are genius! I'm basically loading up on cheap expendable units and flanking or surrounding powerful units to get them to surrender. Cheap and cheesy but it works!

### 5/5 — Detailed but accessible

*2014-09-09, version 1.05*

A ton of fun, light enough for a quick play but detailed enough to keep you immersed. We'll done! Looking forward to more iPhone games from these guys.

### 5/5 — Frontline : Road to Moscow

*2014-08-10, version 1.05*

Great price. Solid game engine. Best War-game title for me since Battle Academy. No multiplayer option, no undo move, and no sequence of next unit. Other than that I am very happy with this title. Yes, I have purchased other titles from shenendoah studios and hunted cow studios.

### 5/5 — Fun

*2014-07-30, version 1.05*

Fun way to kill extra time. Easy to use and learn, with nuanced tactics that really pay off (eg, surround difficult targets with cheap Soldiers to eliminate the target through surrender). Great graphics and sound effects. Would be nice to fight as the Soviets once in a while. Otherwise, my favorite "army guy" game so far.

### 5/5 — Frontline: Road To Moscow

*2014-06-22, version 1.01*

I have really enjoyed this game since downloading it earlier this month. I enjoy the turn based play. Easy to play yet also easy to learn the depth of information that is available to help improve your strategy and not make you want to quit from getting slaughtered by the AI. The style of game reminds me of old war games by SSI. Most people will be too young to know what i'm talking about.

### 5/5 — Frontline: Road to Moscow

*2014-06-22, version 1.01*

Wow! I love strategy war games... and once again Slitherine gets it right! My only complaint. There's no more new battles to fight. I was a huge fan of Battle Academy and now Road to Moscow. Thank you for bringing hours of fun entertainment to my spare moments. Please bring out more scenarios.

### 5/5 — Very fun!!!

*2014-05-31, version 1.01*

Best strategy game I've found so for mobile. Reminds me of the old Panzer General games, good mix of strategy and easy gameplay for this platform.
