### 4/5 — Too Random

*2026-08-16*

The only problem I have with this app is that the notes given to you in a lesson are too random. You can go through a lesson for a single note, and not hear it once.

Developers: please stop using a completely random value to determine what note should be played next. I would recommend dividing the number of notes being tested by the number of questions the user is given. Use the quotient to determine the minimum number of times each note is played. Then randomly assign the remainder (ideally without adding to the same note twice). Then randomly determine the order of the questions.

Seriously, I would like to be able to practice “Fa”, and “Sol”, but most of the quizzes give me “Do” nearly 50% of the time.

### 4/5 — Very functional

*2026-08-09*

It does what it says on the box. It would be nice if there was a more fun game section but my ears are improving with the training nevertheless

### 5/5 — We need chords

*2026-05-20*

We need chords training, please update the new function ASAP!

### 5/5 — Keep trying

*2026-05-17, version 3.28.0*

Put the effort in and it works! I am on the first four notes in C and I just can’t get the major 3rd consistently but I will keep trying - 2nd post now 97% one octave cmaj

*2026-03-09*

### 5/5 — Best Melodic Ear Training App

*2026-03-09, version 3.28.0*

I love how this uses solfège and gradually increases in difficulty, with ways to customize your practice. If you want to play melodies by ear, this app is very helpful, and you can practice anywhere.

### 5/5 — Ótim

*2026-03-03*

### 5/5 — Kozy

*2026-02-20*

Great App！

### 5/5 — Hard but effective

*2026-02-15, version 3.28.0*

The standard is 90% accuracy, which can sometimes feel frustrating in a world where it often feels like apps nudge us in just the right way to keep us on them. But if you really want this skill and to be a better musician, you must persist. I’m all for this and recommend this app to anyone serious about music

### 5/5 — Very thankful

*2026-02-04, version 3.28.0*

I’m an adult, very interested in music but had no ear training or ability to audiate. This app has been SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL. Very thoughtful in designing the activities and settings. It’s the most valuable time I spend on my phone.

### 3/5 — Not bad, but too basic

*2026-01-24, version 3.28.0*

After I purchased this app I found more complete apps even for free. For example, Sonofield is way more clear, educational and visual. I would have liked to be more patient and make a better research before paying for this app

### 5/5 — Wonderful

*2026-01-16, version 3.28.0*

Love it. The new melodic dictations are great, I hope to see it expanded further for chord recognition!

Edit: I really think this method could be applied to chords. Basic level should have just a few chords, root inversions only, then 2nd and 3rd inversions, then expand to larger octave range, then eventually recognize progressions.

### 5/5 — Wow! So helpful!

*2026-01-12, version 3.28.0*

Ive struggled for many years with musical ear training. Honestly wish something like this was available while I was in my undergrad b/c courses and professors in college couldn’t figure out why I was struggling so much with everything.

As a vocal musician who enjoys singing in ensembles, this app really has something for everyone at every level.

Recommend to everyone!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — No explanation of how it works

*2026-05-05, version 3.28.0*

I have trying to figure out this for a week. No explanation of how to compare, how to practice, how differentiate the tones. Just blind guessing hoping something will click. No support or instruction if you are in a similar situation. Jus a money grab DONT BUY

### 1/5 — No free trial.

*2026-04-13, version 3.28.0*

The ad said free with in app puchases, but not true. Might be good.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2026-01-15, version 3.28.0*

Do not recommend

### 1/5 — I dont understand

*2025-09-30, version 3.24.0*

I don’t get it, maybe I am dumb.. but the play like some pitch than stop and play another pitch, and without explain to me how they sound I should guess the right pitch.. how I guess a pitch if I don’t know that pitch…

### 1/5 — Not useful for learning

*2024-04-02*

The instructions in the app assume the user already knows what is meant by “resolve”, and that the users brain will “automatically” be tuned to the key of C, and it assumes the user already understands all of the nuances of these terms and practices related to music. The app and instructions therefore assume the user already has a well developed ear and understanding of music, therefore having no need for the app other than to play a game with it. Additionally, after the user figures out how to play the game that this app really is, it does not help the user develop their ear to identify musical notes and tones. The user will progress in the extremely simple games provided that contain only half an octave or just one octave, but in multiple octaves the user will not and cannot progress and improve using this app.

### 1/5 — IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!

*2023-11-04, version 3.3.7*

I CANT FINISH A SINGLE THING THIS IS BAD

### 1/5 — Annoying Resolutions!

*2020-08-02*

What have you done to the app in the update? It was perfect in previous version! I can’t turn off the annoying resolutions!! I don’t want to hear them every time I pick a note, please add the option to turn it off like the previous version.

### 1/5 — Not working

*2016-05-14*

The interface is nice. Only one problem: it's not working with my iPhone.

**Developer response:** Some audio issues were fixed in the latest version. Please update this app.

### 2/5 — Easy

*2026-07-15*

It is way too easy for professional musicians. There is no clap back and many more.

### 2/5 — Not bad, but too basic

*2026-01-30, version 3.28.0*

After I purchased this app I found more complete apps even for free. For example, Sonofield is way more clear, educational and visual. I would have liked to be more patient and make a better research before paying for this app. I understand the idea of offering customization to create personalized modes (which other free apps also provide), but out of the box it feels outdated and adds very little value compared to other options in the store. I think you should consider adjusting the price, or simply not charging for something this basic

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — The best ear trainer

*2026-08-26*

I tried for months to train my ear. Using sonofield and other resources. But this app, Functional Ear Trainer, it’s just … another level. The method is deceptively simple and yet … it works. In just 1-2 weeks of Functional Ear trainer I can recognize all the degrees of the major scale in less than 1 second each. I’m amazed!

### 5/5 — first review i have ever posted, first time I have ever spent money on an app

*2026-08-19, version 3.28.0*

absolutely sublime. simple and to the point, no ads, well thought out ui and progression through the levels. This is what every app should be like.

Hoping some day they add a chord progressions level

### 5/5 — Reward system

*2026-08-12*

Imo the only things that is missing from this app is a reward system. Something that track your consistency and maybe unlock some titles. Anything that keep you practicing daily. Otherwise this is perfect. More then a fair price for the whole package. Amazing tool

### 5/5 — Amazing Ear Training App

*2026-07-31, version 3.28.0*

Great app, I’ve been getting over 90% consistently on the exercises. It would be great if the developers added identifying chord progressions as well.

### 5/5 — Nice app

*2026-07-13*

I'm an app developer too, and have impressed with your app. The app doesn't seem to be updated very often, but I would appreciate it if you add Korean. Just AI translation is fine. Hope you everything goes well.

### 5/5 — Tell your worship team vocalist

*2026-06-17, version 3.28.0*

This is a great tool to share with your worship team for simple ear training.

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2026-06-17, version 3.28.0*

Really great and fun to use for learning music

*2026-06-14*

### 5/5 — Keep trying

*2026-06-05, version 3.28.0*

Put the effort in and it works! I am on the first four notes in C and I just can’t get the major 3rd consistently but I will keep trying - 2nd post now 97% one octave cmaj - 3rd post c major all octaves 95% - many many goes - I don’t move on until I get 100% consistently
