If you eat a mainly WFPB diet or you shop at independents, I wouldn’t bother. I have in the past had to update the company about a product that was no longer vegan (as it was listed as vegan in the app). I know company’s change recipes and it would be difficult to stay on top of all the updates, but if you can’t rely on the app I feel like it’s a bit of a waste. ### 2/5 — Not ready for NZ market yet *2024-12-17, version 9.13* Not many NZ products listed. Will be great once it’s complete. I wish I’d waited a few months to buy it as $20 is a lot for an app ### 2/5 — Needs a lot of improvement *2024-12-14* I don’t understand how this app has such good reviews. The only things on here are the very obviously vegan products, 80-90% of the items I’ve scanned haven’t been registered, more than a few have brought up the wrong product. Not only this, you pay for the app and then they still expect you to also buy a subscription for most features. Not impressed at all. **Developer response:** We have over 100,000 Australian products in the app database. The successful scan rate (where the barcode scanned by an app user matches a product in the database is over 90%). Please also note that all of the core features of the app are available without a subscription. The optional subscription provides additional features. They are so up to date and keep everyone informed on labels and packaging and ingredients. I think they go above and beyond and I use the app whenever I'm buying something new (or if I've just forgotten the status of an item). Definitely a must-have for vegans. The Pro is certainly worth it, as is the subscription. The fact that the subscription has value but isn’t necessary to use the app (like so many other app models) is really fair. It is much appreciated. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Pointless Vegan Pro *2026-07-28* Have used Fussy Vegan for a number of years now, but it’s clear this app no longer keeps up. It’s no longer part of my regular shopping routine because checking products for their status yields almost always zero results. Too many items not indexed, wrong barcodes and hundreds of images of products missing. It appears they also can no longer be bothered including non-vegan products to confirm their status. Raised concerns to customer service on multiple occasions, however they blatantly ignore messages or respond rudely to the slightest bit of criticism. Embarrassed to have recommended this app to so many. ### 1/5 — Poor behaviour *2026-07-11, version 11.03* Developer blocks users on social media for giving feedback ### 1/5 — NZ user disappointed. *2026-05-01, version 10.76* Overall really disappointing, unlikely to use as the work hasn’t been done uploading most New Zealand vegan options. Out of date with products no longer made and sold still listed. Glitch in Food Chain segment when clicking on some options. ### 1/5 — Great but now AI *2026-04-19* Get rid of the AI Update: Snarky response from developer. Seems fine with AI but clearly happy to ignore the environmental aspects of AI and then seems to think just because Apple and everyone else uses AI it is okay, but most people eat animal products, doesn't make it right and a vegan business should know better. AI is not needed in this instance. it has potential for medicine and could solve some of the world's biggest problems but is not needed in day to day life like a vegan products list. **Developer response:** You do know that AI is used in almost all aspects of technology, including this rating system on the App Store. We are not going to apologise for making the app more user friendly. ### 1/5 — Not USA friendly *2025-01-18* I went around my house scanning barcodes and none were found in the app. The fact that this app doesn’t really work for US items would have been nice to know before I purchased it. **Developer response:** Please note that in the App Store description for the app, under key features, the first line is “* Scan the barcode on grocery and other products to check whether that product is vegan or not (Australia and New Zealand).” We would appreciate removing the negative review and asking Apple for a refund instead of you purchased the app in error. ### 1/5 — Average attitude *2024-07-13, version 8.50* Average organization who puts the feelings of vegans above the good of animals. Have a look at their social media and you’ll see - if anything is said contrary to what the page owner thinks is correct you get blocked and deleted. I was deleted for saying it’s good to have vegan products in the meat aisle as that’s what converts more non vegans to vegan - having vegan products front and center where there is most foot flow in a shop. This idea is backed by company data given to me by someone I know who works for a big brand here in australia. They put their feelings over facts. Note - I am vegan. Align your actions with your values fussy vegan. Do better. ### 1/5 — Doesn't Work *2023-08-13* Every barcode I scan it says "no barcode found" and when I try to search products it says "no product found". Waste of money. **Developer response:** Please note that we do not advertise in the app description that we support retail products in the USA. For USA, we have extensive food chain menu items and vegan restaurants. For retail products, we only offer support for Australia and New Zealand. ### 1/5 — Horrible support team. *2023-03-20* I have been a long time user of this app and have found it useful (when it actually has the item in the data base) but after contacting The Fussy Vegan via Facebook with a clarification question about a new product I was abruptly blocked from their page. No response or reason for their action. Very disappointed. If I hadn’t had this app for several years I would get my money back. Edit: I have followed the fussy vegan on Facebook for almost as long as I have had this application and have seen the team answer product question on their posts. **Developer response:** Please note that we do not offer app support via facebook. If you have a question about a product, please lodge a support ticket from within the app. We stopped providing app support via social media over a year ago when we launched our new help desk system. ### 1/5 — Terrible company *2022-10-29* They act like the authority on Veganism. And if anyone speaks up or criticises them back they block them from their Facebook page. I can guarantee I’ve been vegan longer than them. Shame I gave my money to them via this app when it doesn’t really break any ground. If Impossible burgers aren’t vegan, than neither is anything made by Nestle, Coca Cola, Pepsi co etc or shopping in a Woolies or Coles store would be either. Avoid **Developer response:** We are experts (and an authority) on what is vegan but we do not decide what is vegan. We follow the ISO vegan standard as well as the standards of all of the major vegan certifying organisations around the world. Having a non vegan that supports animal testing trying to bully us (by leaving a 1 star review) into saying something is vegan when it is not does not work with us. People buy our app for that very reason, because they know we do not put our personal opinion on the vegan status of products and we always provide an explanation as to why something is not vegan. Our app is very ground breaking as it was the first (and still only) app with a comprehensive database of vegan products in Australia. ### 1/5 — Owners bully companies out of it *2021-11-03, version 5.19* The idea behind the app is great but the owners of the app constantly bully companies and people online who disagree with their opinions of what is “vegan” and are constantly on a power trip. At all. But I felt almost giddy scanning products. Some of our staples are not listed yet, so we took lots of photos to help with the database. It sparked a community feeling I don’t have often as we don’t know many vegans in person. The app was very helpful finding suitable snacks for our first overnight tramping trip. And I saw so many items in the product lists that I’d never have bothered checking as they had “beef” or “chicken” in the name (lots of instant noodles for example), that are actually vegan.
