The controller and app are rubbish and sadly GAF is 0 help.I have three of these units. A bit Fiddly to connect but controllers Technically worked the first couple month or so. Now a year and a half later none work. Tried just about everything. GAF would not replace the controllers with standard ones. Not even selling me some at a discount. :( ### 1/5 — Not dependable at all *2020-07-19, version 2.1* This app barely works at all. Constantly freezes. Restarts don’t help. Read out from device (temp and humidity) seems wrong. I plan to remove the WiFi unit, install a simple temperature switch, and delete this app off my phone. ### 1/5 — This app is horrible! *2020-06-06, version 2.1* Why does the fan constantly disconnect from my device?? It does not operate at default settings if it’s not connected to a device by the way. It just turns on and constantly runs. It’s 85 degrees in my attic with 30% humidity and it’s set for 90 degrees and 50% humidity. Default is 105 and 75, but it’s lower than that and it’s running. I even set it up to run off of separate device that stays home at all times and it constantly runs anyway. Ugh!!! I wonder why? I look at survey most people is not happy with this app due no connect to fan device Bluetooth. Model WRV5. If you want buy this “WiFi attic vent”. This device may not working. I believe fan motor is work. Only way you have to cut off wire remove device and replace manual temperature device. If you see same kind at the Home Depot then don’t buy it. Company make “GAF”. Impossible to connect multiple units. Poor app-device interface. ### 1/5 — Junk *2019-10-15, version 2.0* I bought 2 of these units and had them installed. My husband didn’t want the wifi fans. I talked him into it and now I regret it and agree with him. The WiFi is awful. 85% of the time, I can not connect because it doesn’t recognize either of the fans. On a separate note these fans are loud. I definitely can hear them when they are running. My husband originally wanted whirlybirds and I talked him into a fan and them talked him into the WiFi fan. Now I don’t ever hear the end of it. I think I’m gonna pay to have them removed and return them and go back to my husband’s original idea of whirlybirds. ### 1/5 — App did not work *2019-10-01, version 2.0* My device connected with the wi-fi module (network) but it was never added to the device list in the app. Ended up swapping the wi-fi module with the thermostat switch from the old fan. Added a manual switch to bypass the thermostat when needed. A lot of work for something that should have been plug-n-play. ### 1/5 — Lacks many functions. *2019-09-17, version 2.0* The fan does not connect to your home Wi-Fi. It will only connect to your phone directly. Additionally setting the thermostat or humidity to turn on does not result in the fan turning off when it is below that temperature or humidity. ### 1/5 — Poorly Designed App *2019-08-08, version 2.0* I have to have this because one of my two fans is too high and out of sight. But unfortunately, this app is much worse than I could have imagined. Everything everyone else has written is absolutely true. Using it is very cumbersome. And as noted by others, I still can’t tell from the App if the fan I can’t see is actually working at all. They claim to be working on an upgrade which will fix some of the issues. Unfortunately they will learn this App will only let you view the default programming if you can get it to connect properly. It will not allow you save or change the default programming to the device. It will eventually default back the standard program every time. This app is useless as is the wifi device it connects to. The negative reviews are from users who have owned the device and realized their set programs where never set. ### 1/5 — WiFi? Not so much… *2021-07-24, version 2.1* Connects only to the GAF WiFi internal to the vent…no way to connect the vent to my home WiFi. So no way to monitor/control the vent when I’m away from home. Stupid… ### 1/5 — Very weak app *2021-07-24, version 2.1* This is a really poor app. At best it can be given one star because you can set the vent fan & turn it on & off which in my case eliminates the need for a ladder in the attic. It does not connect to your network so you cannot control it outside the home. Using wifi you either connect to the fan or you home network. The best choice is to connect via Bluetooth after updating the firmware. It even lacks the ability to refresh without closing & reopening the app. I expected better from GAF. Hopefully they will improve it over time but based on my brief encounter with their support staff I doubt it. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Works great *2020-11-20, version 2.1* I had the same issues as everyone else buy it’s the phone and not the vent. The issue is the phone need to connect to the vent wifi and when it does and your phone sees it doesn’t work it connects to the cell tower signal even if your phone says it’s on wifi. So all you need to do is disconnect your phone from the cell tower which is easy to do with a swipe and click so no big deal. I’m amazed how something so simple becomes so complicated for most people. ### 5/5 — Worked like a charm! *2020-10-10, version 2.1* I’m a roofing contractor and we just installed two wifi vents. Once they were powered they showed up on the list of available wifi connections. You can only connect to one at a time but, my phone connected to them no problem. Then, the app found the connected device no problem. I could turn the vent on manually or turn it on with the thermostat setting. I made settings for the first one, then I switched over the connection to the second one. I turned it on and off through all avenues, and made settings for it. Then I switched back to the first one again and, the setting were still as I put them. I updated firmware immediately so, hopefully these things will continue to be this awesome for years into the future! ### 5/5 — Confused By Negative Reviews *2020-06-26, version 2.1* First off I am NOT affiliated with GAF or their app developer. That being said, I’m confused as to why there are so many negative reviews on this product and the app. I installed the gable vent fan using rubber insulator washers placed between the four “L” brackets and wall studs. It is located directly above my home office and I can barely hear it when it’s on (and yes, my hearing is fine!) The app works as advertised so I’m wondering why so many negative reviews? I’m very happy with my purchase and I’m really glad I took a chance and ignored all the negative feedback. This is a good product that is reasonably priced. ### 5/5 — Does the job *2020-05-22, version 2.1* A lot of these negative reviews are unfounded. Folks, this is not a smart device like your nest thermostat. A roof vent typically has a manual control for thermostat and humidistat. This is something you set and forget in most cases, or adjust only seasonally. This simply keeps you for having to go into the attic to do it. There is no reason to adjust the settings while away from home, or on a frequent basis. If you want to monitor the temp of your attic you need a different device, preferably near the attic floor. In a tall attic there is a huge difference between the roof deck and the attic floor. The app is a bit confusing, esp with two fans. Yes you must log into the fans WiFi network, make your adjustment, then log back into your home WiFi. This is secure. Do you want someone hacking into your router through your attic fan? No. I hope GAF can improve the app and the fan, but they just need to make the marketing more clear. For me it’s been great. No ladders. ### 4/5 — Best purchase this summer!!! *2018-07-23, version 2.0* Love this product and this app I would like to make one request and that is to make the apps lil fan icon move when it is on and or show that it is on in the app when it is blowing thank you! ### 3/5 — Hit and Miss *2023-04-15, version 2.1* Operates as a standalone Wi-Fi server or Bluetooth. Relatively easy to use and operate. Generally set and forget. Wi-Fi connection is frustrating as it drops out and you can only reconnect by shutting the power on and off. It is what it is and easier than climbing in the attic every time you want to make an adjustment ### 2/5 — Can’t change passcode *2021-02-18, version 2.1* Called gaff to find out how to change the passcode to my fan because it came with no instructions on it let alone a password to even connect to it in the first place. They say you can’t. Set up was easy however it doesn’t work 99% of the time! I have the temp and humidity both set for their lowest settings and the humidity and the temperature are both higher than the settings and it does not turn on. I have to constantly go in and turn it on manually. Very Inconvenient. I think I am going to bypass the whole system and put a manual switch and that will be more reliable. I would not buy this unit again if I had to rely on the Wi-Fi.
