## What is Gaimen Kirikae?

Exam prep for converting a foreign driver's licence to a Japanese one (gaimen kirikae, 外免切替).

・Knowledge test (written): 797 questions, with mock exams in the real format: 50 questions in 30 minutes
・Skill test (driving): list of test tasks, deduction table, 93 scenario questions, course maps for test centres such as Samezu
・Road signs and road markings: 289, illustrated
・8 languages: 日本語・English・简体中文・Tiếng Việt・Português・한국어・नेपाली・Bahasa Indonesia (your language shown next to the Japanese original)
・Usable without buying: chapters 1 and 4, the sign guide, the procedure guide, and the driving test task list plus 2 sample scenario questions. The rest is a one-time purchase, no subscription (all chapters + mock exams, the Practical Test Pack, or both as a set)
・No ads. Works offline

■ The test changed in October 2025
The knowledge test went from 10 to 50 questions. You must answer 45 correctly (90%) within 30 minutes to pass; 6 mistakes means you fail. The mock exams here follow these rules exactly.

■ Every question has a source
Questions are based on the National Police Agency's Rules for Road Use (「交通の方法に関する教則」, National Public Safety Commission Notice No. 3). Each question shows the chapter and section it is based on, quoting the original text word for word. If you doubt an answer, you can check it yourself.

■ What's inside
・11 chapters, 797 questions
・Road sign and marking guide: 289 entries (illustration, meaning and rulebook reference)
・50-question, 30-minute mock exam (real test conditions; jump back by question number to review)
・Review only the questions you got wrong

■ Driving test preparation
Based on the original text of National Police Agency directives (foreign licence handling guidelines, driving skill test standards, scoring standard), the app covers the list of test tasks, actions that end the test on the spot, the deduction table, 93 scenario questions, the flow of test day, and information on test centres in 7 prefectures (Fuchu & Samezu, Futamatagawa, Konosu, Makuhari, Hirabari, Kadoma & Komyoike, Chikuho, Chikugo & Fukuoka). The task list and 2 scenario questions are viewable without buying. We make no promise about your test result.

■ Study plan
Enter your test date to see the days left and a daily question target. Optional daily reminder at a set time (on or off anytime).

■ If you fail
4 steps to take after failing the knowledge test, practice on just the questions you missed, and your last 3 mock exam scores.

■ Booking guide
How to book, with links to the official pages, for 7 prefectures: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Aichi, Osaka and Fukuoka. Waiting times are quoted as the official pages state them; we add no figures of our own.

■ Find out if you need to take the tests
Choose the country that issued your licence to see whether you need the knowledge and skill tests. 29 countries and regions are exempt; for the United States it depends on the state.

■ Step-by-step procedure
Original licence, translation, residence certificate (住民票), proof of stay, booking, what to bring: an 8-step checklist.

■ What you can use without buying
Chapters 1 and 4, the sign guide, the exemption check, procedure and booking guides, and part of the driving test section (task list, 2 scenario questions). All chapters with mock exams, and the Practical Test Pack, are each a one-time purchase you keep (not monthly). A set of both is also available.

■ No internet needed
Questions and explanations are inside the app. Your study history and plan stay on your device and are never sent. No account needed.
