This gives individuals who can hear, but have trouble processing the ability to reference the closed captioning for what they missed. This app runs both behind and ahead of the speaking. The app will glitch and jump over text at times too. It would be more helpful if the app scrolled through text as they do with live tv instead of changing screens similar to a PowerPoint presentation. The app is better than nothing, but it needs a lot of improvement to offer true accessibility to the hearing impaired. ### 4/5 — Helpful *2023-04-01* I love this idea, but I feel like a few features could be added. I have an auditory processing disorder, meaning sometimes I hear something but don’t quite know what was said. I would love it if they could add a feature that makes it lag behind a few seconds! Also sometimes the subtitles were a bit too early and I would read it like 5-10 seconds before it was said. I love the idea and thank you to the developers for making theatre a little bit more accessible for people like me! ### 1/5 — Wasted space *2022-12-11, version 3.4.8* Forget downloading this app; due to extreme difficulty seeing it during a show. The red letters are just barely visible and can’t be adjusted by the screen brightness feature. There is no audio feature on the app for the hearing impaired. ### 3/5 — Bluetooth headphone support *2022-11-04, version 3.4.8* It’s a bit difficult to jump through all the hurdles the first time or two, but once you’ve used used it, subsequent uses are easier. Support for Bluetooth headphones would be nice for those using Audio Description (who uses wired headphones any more?) It’s surprising the app hasn’t been updated in 2 years. ### 1/5 — Would not launch *2022-08-05, version 3.4.8* I tried to launch Galapro at DPAC in Durham, NC for the performance of To Kill a Mockingbird on 8/04/2022. Your app never loaded. All it would do was churn. Needless to add, I was very disappointed. Galapro would be an extremely useful app for hearing impaired people like me - if it worked. I would pay a premium for an app that offered reliable closed captioning at live performances. You have the good sense for now to offer your app for free free while I assume you are debugging the software. If I had paid for the current version of Galapro, I would be demanding my money back. By the way, what you are attempting to do has been successfully done in Europe with a different technology. At the Paris Opera, closed captioning is offered on a continuously scrolling screen as wide as and above the proscenium arch. It is similar to what you might see in Times Square, NYC. If you collaborated with theater owners in the US you might find this could be a viable business opportunity. ### 1/5 — Couldn’t read the closed captions *2022-04-28* I tried to use the app for Hamilton in Charlotte. The red print was much too dim to read (brightness was not on auto) and the app overrode the iPhone brightness control. When I changed the brightness control to make the screen brighter the app immediately resets it when it starts. The app also blocks the control panel from being pulled up so it can’t be pulled up to change the brightness while the app is open. ### 1/5 — Doesn’t work *2022-02-23* I downloaded this in advance of seeing Hamilton. After I got everything set up, connected to the wifi as it directed me to and got the word Hamilton on the screen, nothing happened. The show started and there was no closed captioning. I waited a few minutes but nothing worked. At intermission, I asked the woman at the service office and she knew nothing about it, but said she’d ask a tour manager, which was a worthless effort as they just laughed and said that never works. Basically, waste your time if you want but this isn’t good technology yet. ### 2/5 — No movies, and theater— but no Hamilton? *2021-10-03, version 3.4.8* this app is not ready for prime time at all. big disappointment ### 1/5 — Doesn’t usually work *2019-10-11* Update-even though i was on most current build, I deleted the app, rebooted and it at least partially worked. This time I got to the select city point. Was no longer at theater to try but this doesn’t explain other issues. When you are at the theater you really don’t expect to need to troubleshoot and do software testing. Probably more a review of the implementation, but out of 5 attempts it’s only worked once. ### 3/5 — Theater mode help needed *2019-06-24, version 3.3.3* 3 stars only because I had to put something and I have not used GalaPro yet. I am going to use GalaPro in two days. Your video says that my phone needs to be in Theater Mode. I do not see that option on my iPhone 8S. Where do I find it? My phone said I was connected to the right WiFi and I was in airplane mode but absolutely no luck. I kept getting an error message. This was so frustrating. I was lucky to be HoH so I was able to enjoy some of the show but I did miss quite a few parts since I wasn’t able to fully hear. Very frustrating experience. ### 1/5 — Freezes/Glitchy *2026-01-26* Went to see Moulin Rouge yesterday. I filled the instructions in the app to connect which it did. During at act one the app froze, jumped or failed to the point I tried rebooting my phone and/or closing the app and started again. This app is a failure. Do not rely on it for Cc. I’d forgive some lag on captions but they pause for up to a minute sometimes and then would completely skip captions. Some captions are attributed to incorrect characters. I can still hear but for someone who would need this to understand the show this would be atrocious. ### 1/5 — Unreliable. Too slow, too fast, intermittent, didn't work, did work, etc. ### 1/5 — Complete Garbage *2023-04-26, version 3.4.8* Don’t waste your time with this piece of garbage app. Doesn’t work! ### 1/5 — Two tries, two venues, two failures *2023-04-09* I am hearing impaired and was pleased to find out, a few weeks ago, that closed captioning was available for To Kill a Mockingbird in Orlando, through GalaPro. Unfortunately, it was a lesson in frustration. Setting it up and logging into the Wi-Fi was easy enough, but the captioning raced ahead or lagged behind or froze and skipped ahead and then the signal dropped. After reconnecting and having successful captioning for a few minutes it threw an error message that said the password was incorrect. I reconnected again and restarted the app, which remained out of synch with actual dialog for a few minutes and it disconnected again. At that point my (brand new) iPhone went back in my purse and I attempted as much lip reading as possible (not much). Today my husband and I attended a different stage show at a different venue and during intermission I found out that captioning was available. After setting up my phone and logging in to the Wi-Fi, the app showed “intermission”. As the second act started, the screen changed to “End of Act 1” and then displayed the final line of the chorus that was sung at the end of that act. No Act 2 dialog ever appeared. I restarted the app and reconnected to the GalaPro Wi-Fi but that same last line of the prior act was all that appeared. Again, the phone went back in my purse. Maybe the third time will be the charm? Somehow, I doubt it. ### 1/5 — Useless in Dr Phillips Ctr, Orlando *2023-03-27, version 3.4.8* Galapro worked for about a minute before freezing. Tried several times to restart it, including rebooting, to no avail. It would hang each time. Very frustrating because for that minute, it was quite helpful. Just saw Lincoln at the Ford ‘s Theater and this was perfect. ### 5/5 — Family Able to Enjoy Lion King *2024-08-30* I found out about this app and encouraged my deaf husband to try it. We were hopeful but also know how captioning devices usually don’t work well and would enjoy the performance no matter what. Thankfully this app worked. I can hear, so I would glance over to see if the captions matched with the actors and it was spot on on the timing; my husband was able to laugh along with the rest of the audience as jokes were told instead of seconds later. Surprisingly it also captioned background noises: “thunder” “ominous noise” “laughter”. It was so wonderful to be able to enjoy a performance as a family for the first time ever. Thanks! ### 5/5 — Lion King Charlotte NC *2024-08-30* Used the app to enjoy The Lion King in Charlotte with my kids and wife. We wanted to take advantage of last minute tickets so scheduling an ASL interpreter. I was able to adjust color of font, size of font, and brightness with no issue. My wife can hear and she said the closed caption was right on time with the actors and it was correct for each character. She said a couple of times when characters improved it wouldn’t match the words, but I was impressed it actually offers closed captions for the singing parts as well as background noises like “thunder clapping” ….ominous sound”…. Really helpful when they are talking fast or involving accents. ### 5/5 — My experience was fantastic *2024-06-06* I rarely write reviews but I read a lot of them and after reading some of the negative experiences in here, I felt compelled to share my first experience with this app. I Just came from watching Hamilton in NYC, where this app was used for Captions. Nearly all of the show it was right on with the dialogue and that was better than I expected given the rapid fire delivery in this play. Setup was easy enough following the Instructions. I couldn’t see the text well enough at the default brightness, but in the settings you can fix that and also change the font size. Having the captions on my phone on my leg -without bothering anyone nearby - was a game changer for me during many of the parts of this play. Thank you developers and the Hamilton production for making this available! ### 5/5 — So helpful!! *2024-05-04, version 3.4.10* When I saw this in the programme I couldn’t believe it - I have trouble with auditory processing and this is an absolute game changer. You do need to have the app downloaded and an account created while you have an internet connection and in advance of the show starting. It worked very well throughout. There were a few very minor sync issues but they didn’t last for more than a line or two. I found the brightness and font size very easy to adjust. I’m hoping a lot more productions make use of technology like this to help further increase accessibility to the theatre. ### 5/5 — Liberating for hearing impaired *2023-01-14* Used in Atlanta. Absolute game changer for hearing impaired, was on the verge of tears of happiness that I could participate again. FYI, it was kinda tricky to setup. Had to go to the smoking section outside to get enough cell service to load the app, and then once I was in the setup portion, I had to return to my seat to find the special wifi. ### 5/5 — A game changer! *2022-10-14* I wanted to share about my experience with the Gala Pro closed captioning currently being used for To Kill a Mockingbird in the Broadway at the Paramount series in Seattle. There are many people who attend theater productions who are hard of hearing. There are also people, like me, who struggle with verbal comprehension at times. When we saw …Mockingbird, I spent the first act straining to understand… I could hear it, but I just couldn’t make sense of many of the lines, and when people laughed I couldn’t tell why. I was very discouraged at intermission. My husband had seen info about Gala Pro on the STG presents website – I downloaded it over intermission. It was a game changer! By following along with the captioning in the second act, I understood every word! I got the jokes. When I was no longer struggling to understand the words, I could hear the emotional nuance behind them. It was a joyful experience! I was really worried about disturbing the people around me, and was only brave enough to attempt it because I happened to be in the back row of a section with no one seated directly behind me. But the red text on the black background, while being very easy for me to read, was not bright enough to trouble anyone else. My husband actually asked me at the end of the show whether I’d used the app much because he hadn’t noticed me using it. The captioning was correct and timely about 95% of the time. A couple times it skipped over some lines and a couple times it would advance too early to the next line then back up to the right place. But it was far more accurate than my own hearing was! ### 5/5 — GalaPro *2019-07-08* I recently have used GalaPro twice, once in Atlanta and once in Manhattan. I was disappointed each time bc the app was out of sync. The first time in Atlanta, the app froze for a minute or two every ten minutes. The second time in Manhattan, the syncing was too fast and way ahead of the script. I am optimistic that this app is a worthwhile and a work in progress for the hearing impaired like me. July 7th 2019: Finally, blissful success! While at the Music Box Theatre in Manhattan,I used GalaPro and marveled at the perfect synchronization. I noticed that it corrected itself if the sync went to fast or two slow. I look forward to more experiences like this one where I could enjoy following the dialogue with 100% accuracy. On another note, in conjunction with GalaPro, I also used the T- coil headset at several Manhattan theatres. After experiencing an annoying beep during the second acts, I finally hit on a solution suggested by the staff member at the Music Box. I obtained a freshly charged battery for the T coil headset from the staff. Results? No more annoying beeps! Other staffs at the other theaters attributed the beeping to their internet connection.
