## What is Game Book?

A shooting diary that does the copying for you.

Most of us are handed a paper game card at the end of the day, take it home, and weeks later sit down with the whole stack to write it all out by hand. This app is that book, without the transcription.

PHOTOGRAPH THE CARD
Point your phone at the game card and the app reads it — the date, the guns, the bag by species, the cartridges, the drives. It shows you what it found and waits for you to approve it before filling anything in, so a card it misreads costs one tap to discard rather than a mess to tidy up. Names are matched against people already in your diary, so a surname the handwriting mangled is put right on its own.

THREE KINDS OF DAY
Driven shooting, with the bag broken down by species, cartridges used and the cartridges-per-bird figure worked out for you. Stalking, with species, sex, weight, shot distance and placement, rifle and calibre. Vermin control, with a tally by species and the method and purpose recorded.

THE GAME BOOK
A whole season laid out as a ledger: every day in order, the running total kept down the right-hand edge, and the season's totals by species. Game, vermin and deer are kept as three separate records, the way a bound game book keeps them, and never added together.

At the back, the page a real game book keeps: your best day, your best ratio, the biggest season, the ground you have shot most, and the guns you have shot with most often.

IT KNOWS THE SEASONS
Record a day outside the usual open season for that species and the app quietly says so. It flags; it never rules, and it never blocks you. A reminder, not legal advice.

EVERYTHING ELSE A DAY CARRIES
Up to three photographs, the estate and the exact place on the map, participants pulled from your contacts, your own notes, and the weather for that place on that date, looked up automatically.

YOUR RECORD STAYS YOURS
Everything is stored on your phone. Export the whole diary as a spreadsheet for Numbers or Excel, or take a full backup — every entry and every photograph in a single file you can keep in iCloud Drive or email to yourself. You can restore from that backup at any time, and restoring only ever adds entries back; it never overwrites or deletes what is already there.

No account. No subscription. No advertising. Nothing leaves your phone except the coordinates needed to look up that day's weather.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.2.3 — 2026-10-01

Cards scanned sideways, or at any angle, are now turned the right way up before they are read.
A card already in your diary is recognised when you scan it again, even when you scan it away from the shoot.
Tick the day's drives on a card's drives list and the scan fills them in.
More accurate scanning: guns with names like May or June are kept, keepers are no longer listed as guns, figures written above a line are read, and Black Grouse and Wildfowl are recognised.
Photograph a card's cover with its inside and the estate is filled in. Choose up to four photos from your library at once.
A new Cartridges section records the shots on the card and your own cartridges separately.
The scan asks when a card's date is missing or looks wrong.
Updating a saved day from a new scan keeps its photographs and any figures the new scan did not read.
Many smaller fixes and improvements.

### 2.2.2 — 2026-09-28

Game cards laid out as a spread now scan correctly.

• Cards that print the species on one page and the numbered guns on the other are read properly: a blank row stays blank instead of picking up a gun's number from the facing page.
• A total written slightly above its line is now read and checked against the bag.
• "Shots" on a card is recognised as the cartridge count.
• Guns' names come through without the card's numbering.

### 2.2.1 — 2026-09-25

What's new in 2.2.1

Game cards
• "Various" now has its own line in the bag and counts towards the total. The scanner reads it from the card, along with Hares, Rabbits and Other.
• Words printed on the card, such as Hares, Rabbits, Game and Brace, are no longer mistaken for guns.
• If the card prints a total, the app checks the bag against it. You'll see "Matches the card's total", or an orange note if the lines don't add up. It never stops you saving.
• Any line in the bag the scanner can't place is listed on the review sheet instead of being dropped.
• A blank line on the card stays blank instead of borrowing the next line's figure.
• Every figure the scan reads can be corrected on the review sheet before you apply it: each bag line, the card's total and the cartridges.
• A name misread once and saved no longer becomes the spelling the scanner keeps using.

Photos
• Tapping a photo slot on a day now offers Take Photo or Choose from Library, so you can photograph the line or the bag without leaving the app.

What to test
• Scan a card with Various, Hares or Rabbits on it and check the bag and the total.
• Change a figure on the review sheet and watch the total check update.
• Take a photo on a day with the camera and save it.

### 2.2 — 2026-09-19

Game cards that read the whole line: shared pegs are kept as shared, and edited names no longer add an extra gun.
People: the diary now recognises the guns you shoot with, suggests when two spellings are the same person, and lets you merge them.
Accepted spellings for estates and drives can be edited in Settings.
A scanned card that matches a day already in the diary offers to update it rather than saving a second copy.
The scan sheet keeps its orange marks and their reasons until you edit a row, and "Save and scan the next card" moves you straight on.
Fixes and tidying throughout, including the launch screen.
