It feels awkward and cluttered even when you have as little as ten tabs open. The standard grid layout or at least a literal tab on top would’ve been a lot better, but other apps go even further with organization ### 4/5 — Needs just a little bit of work. *2026-05-21* This has become my main browser. What does it for me is the ability to install extensions and user scripts. I actually searched browsers that use both of those and that’s how I found Gear. There’s a few kinks that need to be worked out, like how it freezes. All in all, so far so good. Please keep the updates coming! ### 4/5 — needs more customisation *2026-05-05, version 7.2.9* great app. needs more ways to customise it though. more liquid glass would be an amazing update - a toggle to switch it on and off would be even better. especially for the dock, along with customisable dock to be able to toggle on/off some of the buttons. With that being said, I have two requests for the developer. 1) why can’t I set a default homepage? 2) please let us add the search browser of our choice. The browser home screen is not a web page element, so you cannot set a web site as the home screen. But you can customize it by long press the empty area. The search engine options are deeply optimized with the browser. Everything it can do, safari can do either baked in or with extensions. The only thing that makes this browser truly unique is with web dev tools baked in - no desktop required. The kicker is the paywall is a SUBSCRIPTION. I would pay for a one time fee, but if I would have had access to my laptop instead of my iPad, I would have NEVER subscribed to a *web browser*. This is not AOL/Netscape days, there’s hundreds of free and open source browser options. I cannot recommend this browser unless you absolutely must debug your website on iPad/iPhone. Even then, it’s best to wait. Try Inspect Browser, one time fee and has all the features you need for development. **Developer response:** Hello, installing a Web Extension or UserScript no longer requires a subscription now. Welcome to try it. ### 1/5 — Came for web inspection *2025-03-19* Locked behind a paywall… The only thing that made this app worth the time to download it is the web dev features and it’s locked behind a paywall. Safari has the ability to use UserScripts and comes with built-in ad and tracker blocking features that can be enhanced with additional plugins. What it doesn’t have is a web dev toolkit that doesn’t require a full fledged computer to open. Can’t recommend this app. Safari can do everything this can without paying. As a side note, I would be willing to pay a FLAT fee for this. I use it to enjoy YouTube comfortably by running JS extensions to block ads, enable background playback, and modify the page layout. • Persistent Zoom: Unlike Safari, the page zoom level doesn't easily reset when navigating. I actually find this much more user-friendly. • Seamless Extension Support: Being able to run extensions so easily is a complete game-changer (though it's understandable that a few extensions might not work perfectly). • Beautiful UI: On top of everything, the user interface looks fantastic. Among all the browsers that support extensions, this one is clearly at the very top. 👎 Cons: • Occasional Rendering Issues: A few websites don't render correctly from time to time. When that happens, I just open them in Safari. • Landscape Aspect Ratio: In landscape mode, the blank padding on the left and right edges of the screen is a bit annoying. When I want to maximize screen real estate, Safari handles it fine, but Gear falls short here. • Confusing Private Mode Toggle: Switching between Private and Normal mode can be a little counterintuitive. You have to select the mode from the tab overview, and then tap the "+" button instead of the search box. Since there is no visual feedback when you tap the "+" button, it's hard to realize how it works at first. • Ad-Block Sensor Issues: Even when I turn off the built-in ad blocker, some ads still get blocked, making it impossible to view sites that detect ad blockers. I’ve started using Safari for these sites as well. • Toolbar Customization: Since high customization is Gear's biggest strength, having the ability to customize the toolbar would make it even better. It’s still their mall, however you’re the only two around. “I won’t use it,” you say. And the Gear Browser has a token. It’s still an optional Safari extension you can click on for reasons unexplained. The Discover card has an addon like that, too. You leave the coupon magazine toggle in Safari on, been here, with the Pentagon. When you get to Gear, ask for Aswin Venkat. They’re at Google. Tell them to take to Lyra. That’s your favorite extension.
