### 4/5 — Almost Perfect

*2019-12-27*

Great app! I would love to be able to cross compare ANY 2 gels, not just what is comparable to the first selected gel.
Also once you add a gel to a project, you should be able to click on those gels and see the waveform and transmission %. Not just attached notes.
Fix those two things and you’ve got a 5 star app!

**Developer response:** Thanks, we appreciate your comments. You can cross compare any 2 gels in the library. Just select the first color and then tap the compare icon at the bottom left and that will allow you to find any other gel in the more than 1600 colors. We will take a look at your request for projects and see if it can be done soon. BTW, the twelfth birthday for our app is coming up and we would love to get another star for our rambunctious 12 year old.

### 4/5 — No equal

*2017-12-29, version 3.1.2*

Thanks for the upgrade. Glad to see you care the users. The new preview feature looks good, but I would like to know if it's accurate before I pay again for it.

### 4/5 — Thanks for the update

*2017-09-08, version 3.0.0*

Very useful!

*2012-06-29, version 1.5.1*

### 3/5 — Very useful

*2012-04-20, version 1.5.1*

... but too bad they don't have Rosco swatches in "classic gel book" order rather than numerical order. Would be great to scroll through chromatically.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2011-11-05, version 1.5.1*

As a lighting designer I love this app. It saves time and means you don't have to worry about having your swatch book. Fantastic tool to have if you work with filters. Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Woaaaa

*2011-04-15*

Alcuni esempi:
- L275 Black Scrim - Non c'è nell'applicazione
- L464 Quiet Quarter Grid Cloth - Non c'è nell'applicazione
- L263 Tough Spun FR - 1/2 - Non c'è nell'applicazione

A suivre.

### 5/5 — Idea for a later update

*2010-10-27*

I had an interesting idea posed to me while showing off this app. With oldschool gel swatches, you can easily see what your set looks like with that color on it by just looking through the gel under the stage light.

What I'd like to see is a way to add a filter to the camera screen so you can see how the color looks on the set. I know the transmission won't be perfect, but it'd at least give the designer an idea of what to expect.

### 4/5 — I like it.

*2010-07-16*

Hey ToasterDog (yes, you know who this is!) I find this handy in many ways, but, yes, for theater one should always refer to a swatch book. However when you do jobs like I do, it can be a really useful tool. It's fast, it's accurate (but not to tungsten quality) and you don't need to run to the bus/hotel to get a swatch book. With hundreds of gels out there and limited time, this app can be a lifesaver. If you have 3 weeks to sit in a theater... carry swatch books.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Il ne faut pas parler trop vite

*2012-11-02*

### 1/5 — Swatch Books are free

*2008-07-23, version 0*

Why would I buy an iphone app that doesn't have all of the gels out there when I can go to the nearest shp and get all the swatch books for free and this is only an approximation of what the gel woudl ok like againt white paper, not in life.

### 2/5 — Mouais...

*2013-09-18*

### 2/5 — Search won't work

*2012-10-02, version 1.5.1*

Was a great app but since iOS 6 the search facility won't work! Please sort it!!

### 2/5 — Ok, but used to be better

*2009-08-12*

I bought this app because my girlfriend had gotten it herself several months prior. When she got it an i believe when i first got it it had the ability to compare any 2 gels. but since then in one of the updates Wybron killed this functionality. now you can only compare what they deem "similar" or complementary. Frequently I need to see how 2 gels will react when mixed together, or more often i don't always have a gel that is "similar" (as they define it) so i need to compare a gel i do have with the target gel to see just how far i am. I am quite disappointed that this functionality was removed. What the app does still do it does well but i can't in good conscience recommend this to LD friends of mine as strongly as i once could. I don't see the benefit of removing functionality to replace it with a button that for me is essentially just an ad for another app i don't need or want.

### 3/5 — Bom, mas falta opções de salvamento

*2026-02-04*

### 3/5 — Needs update

*2017-02-13, version 2.0.2*

This app is a great tool for filmmakers but we need a 64 bit version for iPhone 7 and beyond... please make it happen!

### 3/5 — Please turn off the automatic update!

*2013-07-16, version 2.0.2*

Excellent tool, but 9 times out of 10 I will be using this as a very quick reference. Will often need a fairly rapid response. So when the "automatically downloading updates" screen comes up and it locks me out because I have bad data connection at a festival site 10 miles out if Athens, I forget that I am living in the future with astonishing technology at my fingertips and I start shouting at it. Please stop making me shout at my phone in public. Thanking you.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great app

*2020-07-20*

I’ve had this app for over a decade and it’s great. Solid.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for being a long time customer. BTW, we are coming up on our 12th birthday thanks to folks like you. The short answer is no you don't have to pay for existing functionality. When you purchased the app, the compare function was triggered by an icon the looked like a scale or balance. Now the compare function is accessed by a more legible icon. It is found at the bottom left of the gel view screen. The in app purchase is to view gels or photos through the camera much as you would look through a swatch from your gel book. Roughly 1/3 of our customers have added that functionality .

### 5/5 — Fantastic App

*2018-10-02*

Great tool if you take the time to set your screens brightness and color temperature this app renders color really well. Also has nice features to make your life easier.

### 5/5 — Essential Cinematography iPhone app

*2017-12-30*

Thank you for the latest Gel Swatch iPhone app update.

The ability to use my iPhones camera or a calibrated photo to preview thousands of gel colors plus compare gels side by side over the image?

This update is a game changer for my location scouts, tech meetings and those quick “What gel looks good here?” moments.

I can’t wait to use it out in the field and on-set. It’s top of the stack now in my iPhones Cinematography Apps folder.

One suggestion on improving the app.

If the apps photo preview feature gave us the ability to selectively erase or paint on an area of the color gel overlay (for still photos only, not the live camera) this would really help in coming up with complex color combos. The ability to show Production Designers, Set Painters and Props people where a gel color wash will play on a live set would be incredible for an iPhone app.

Tiffen used to have 2 iPhone apps that allowed masking to a certain degree with their camera filters overlaid on top of still photos. They sold it off I believe and it’s now called “DFT” aka Digital Film Tools in the iPhone App Store. It still functions the same and I use it all the time.

I don’t know how complex app coding is but just a thought on taking the app to the next level.

Have a great New Year!

### 5/5 — Thanks for the update!

*2017-09-10*

Well, that took 5 years but I'm very grateful for the additions and improvements. Thanks!

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2017-09-08*

I use this App for almost every one of my productions, it's a very useful and powerful tool to have in your kit.

### 5/5 — Please update!

*2017-04-08, version 2.0.2*

This is a great app! But it needs to be upgraded for iOS 10 and more!

### 5/5 — Incredible

*2014-03-24*

Despite the belated nature of the review (I've had the app for over three years now), this is one of the best app purchases I've ever made as a professional film lighting technician.

As both a means of making color suggestions to cinematographers, as well as finding alternatives to colors I've used in the past, it's invaluable. On top of that, I've used it countless times to identify an unmarked cut of gel pulled from the truck (as long as there's a catalog number on it somewhere, this app can pinpoint it).

Couldn't ask for more. Thanks so much, Wybron!

### 5/5 — Cool, Thanks!

*2014-02-22*

Nice App for lighting technicians and operators!!!

### 5/5 — What Next?

*2013-06-10, version 2.0.2*

Great app, but what's going to happen now that Wybron are closing down? Is it being sold on so someone else can keep it up to date?

### 5/5 — Plutôt pas mal

*2012-12-05*

Sur simple
