I bought Genki 1 workbook and textbook and it’s been great for basics. The app, however, should be free for what it offers and feels like it was made 10+ years ago then forgot about. I already spent $ on both hard copies of the text, it should at least be free to download. If you have the $6 to spare, it’s not unusable, but It won’t really teach you much. It’s a flash card app that coincides with the vocabulary in the book. My recommendation: if you don’t have Anki or either the text or workbook, save the $6 for something else. ### 2/5 — Too buggy for a paid app *2024-08-15* My main issue is that the flash card checker/tests register all correct answers as incorrect, making that feature useless. Besides that, anytime you navigate away from the app in the middle of studying a flash card deck, you have to start over from the very beginning when you go back. As it currently stands, not worth the money I paid for it. ### 2/5 — Limited *2024-08-13* Seem like an old app. Useful with Genki textbook, because verbs are introduced in the same order. But it seems there is no way to work with multiple forms of one verb at a time — it’s only one tense at a time. I want to hear “taberu, tabimasu, tabete, tabemashita, tabeta” but this app doesn’t do that. Also, there’s no audio for the example sentences. I just found the interface really stubborn to navigate. There used to be a really good flashcard app and i thought this would be like that. For what they give you this is hardly worth the cost, especially if you already have the textbooks. I thought this would just be an easier way to study the genki vocab but its not. Excellent app to help with your Nihongo studies *2015-04-28* I am really impressed with this app, if you are using an Iphone/Ipad and studying Japanese this is really a help. If you are using the Genki book series, this is a MUST HAVE app. Unless you are a savant at studying Japanese...and I know I'm not...you know that one of the big hurdles of becoming proficient at Japanese is mastery of verb (and adjective) conjugation. I wish I had this app a year ago when I started with Genki, but even with a year into Genki I'm already thrilled with the app. Looks great on both iPhone (I'm using the 6) and iPad. Hats off to the UX design group, it's an easy to use app. Essentially following the verb/adjective conjugation order as presented in the Genki 1 and 2 texts, you have these main ways to use the app: 1) "Menu" option gives you two main ways to use flashcards. It also lets you create you own set of flashcards. This is huge IMHO. I've used several other flashcard programs, and unless you manually edit the deck you're often stuck with the total collection of flashcards to study with. This app allows you to choose verbs/adjectives from each chapter. Choose one, choose many, choose all...it's up to you. Once you have selected your deck,you can either A) review it, or B) study it through a standard Question, you provide the answer. Each review card is well designed, has audio/example/rule description, and Kanji with furigana conjugated word. 2) Use an alphabetical LIST of the verbs/adjectives to study 3) Review the RULES of the conjugations Other items of note: Audio pronuciation, example sentences and translation, and you enter in your answers in Japanese! This last feature is great, they show you the easy way to add in a Japanese keyboard into your iphone/ipad (dead simple to do). You really should be using less and less Romajii, and this app helps you do this too. As you can tell, I'm very impressed with this app. I'd also recommend the Genki Vocab and Kanji apps too. I could have saved myself lots of $$'s when I started with Genki had I know about these three apps by The Japan Times. I'm not associated with these apps, just a delighted student of Nihongo. It’s quite good, excellent for what it is advertised for. Well done. ### 4/5 — Good but outdated *2025-11-19* It has been very helpful for practicing conjugations, The user interface is not immediately intuitive but you get used to it. I’ve been studying in order of the third edition of the GENKI book, which up to around lesson 8, this app follows the same order of conjugation covered, but now some of the referenced conjugation rules in the app saying they’re mentioned in X chapter, when they’re actually Y chapter. So you have to double check where it’s really referenced. But otherwise still usable It’s time for them to update the app to the third edition book 🙂 ### 4/5 — I had many `aha!` moments after hearing Japanese be spoken around my house for years. *2025-06-20, version 3.1* I like it because you can find all the ways verbs and adjectives conjugate under `list`, so you can learn by quick example (I find the textbook is a little watered down, there`s too much explanation, so it gets boring and a little confusing as well). There’s also the `Rules` tab if you want to quickly jump ahead and get familiar with a conjugation you’re unfamiliar with. This app makes the textbook much easier to understand if you review these first, then study the textbook (before each chapter). I had many `aha!` moments using the app (my wife and children speak Japanese, so I hear it often at home, so while going through the details on the app, many of the words sounded familiar and I was like `Aha! So that’s what she was saying that one time` … A couple small complains. Under `menu`, once you’ve `checked` all the verbs and adjectives you’re familiar with, you can no longer review them under `MyDeck` or `Check` (unless you restore) … they should still allow you to go through and review, because sometimes, you forget words that you were once quick and confident with. My idea would allow you to quickly go through them without having to restore all of them. Another complaint. Only 56 verbs and 24 adjectives (but, after studying them all, it will make the thousands of other adjectives and verbs much easier to understand and breakdown, so it’s a good base, but it would be nice if they added more). One last small thing, it would be nice if they allowed this app to be able to split screen on new iPads, I don`t think they’ve updated this app in years … in todays world, with AI technology, it should be easy for them to make updates on the app. Those 3 things aside, its not bad all, its totally worth the $8, I disagree with the other negative reviews.
